We have been feeding our dogs Healthy Weight Beneful for the last few years but my husband just read that it is responsible for a lot of health problems in dogs. I never really thought it was great but didn’t know what to buy instead. I read a little last night and noted that whatever I buy needs to have real meat as the first ingredient.
Right now i’m thinking about trying Blue Buffalo but before I go buy a bag I wanted to check with all you helpful women. Any better, healthier, ideas?
Also, my dogs are not overweight and do not need to be on a healthy weight food. My husband is paranoid about them getting fat because his old dog was really overweight but our dogs are really active.

@Birdee106: We just switched from Beneful to Wellness brand dog food. We recently read about the health problems that have started to become associated with Beneful. My SIL is a vet tech and she recommended Wellness to us. It is taking a solid week to make the actual switch, but our dogs seem to love it!

I was feeding my pups a brand called Long Meadow Ranch. Super expensive, but good for them! I just switched, though, to the Kirkland brand from Costco – much cheaper, and a vet recommended it. he said that it’s just as good as Wellness, Blue Buffalo, etc. but much easier on your pocketbook. I have two pups, a Jack Russell and a Chocolate Lab, and both seem to like the food just fine.

My dog has been on Avoderm for years and it’s been a godsend. But our newest dog has some food allergy issues so we’re working on transitioning them both over to Blue Basics grain free to keep from having to buy two different brands of food. We’ve been using it for a month now and they both have smaller (more efficient :p) poops and much less stinky farts, YAY!

My dogs eat Taste of the Wild right now. We’re making the switch from Purina One. We wanted to go with something a little better for them but without breaking the bank (I have two dogs, one is 70 pounds and the other will be about as much).

@Birdee106: We feed our dogs Blue Buffalo BASICS. Please note the difference.
The standard BB brand contains animal by-products that most vets and animal owners would tell you to avoid. The Basics brand is limited diet meaning it does not contain any corn, wheat, dairy, soy, eggs or any by-product meal or artificial ingredients. Our dogs have been on this food (Salmon and Sweet Potato) for nearly six months and the difference is huge.
Before we switched we also used Natural Balance Limited Ingredients and that is also a great option.

@Birdee106: my huskey has had all kinds of allergy issues and food not agreeing with his tummy. He is now in taste of the wild which is a really high quality food. Blue buffalo is good too!

My Mastiff and Speagle (spaniel/beagle) both eat Blue Buffalo. The big one eats large breed adult and the small one eat small breed adult – switched fro Wellness- stools are much more solid now. and Wellness wasn’t always easy to find in large breed formula.

We feed our Blue Buffalo, but I know someone who owns a pet store and she has recommended Acana to us so we will probably switch!

We feed our dogs Blue Buffalo for seniors. This might be TMI, but in the six years we have had our lab mix this is the first food that has give him solid poop. That convinced me that it was worth the steep price tag.
