There are lots of things for, about, and pertaining to weddings that we love.
What are some of the trends you've been seeing lately that you don't like? (ie. dresses, rings, decor, flowers, etc.)
Pick up skirts. I hate them...hate them hate them hate them! Sorry to anyone who has them. I really dislike them.
Oh and MONSTROUS hairdos. Seriously, the teasing comb can be put down...
Hmmmmm. I'm not sure. Most things I don't love or hate...there are just a couple things (the aforementioned) that i'm really against!
I agree but disagree with the pick up thing. I don't prefer them for myself- but some of them look cheaply done.
I really love my ring. I actually think that the style of my ring is the only ring style that apeals to me
I voted for dresses. I'll flip through bridal magazines, and see ads for some dresses that I think are hideous!! I don't care if they're Monique Lhuillier or Vera Wang or some other big name designer... or if they cost $15,000... some of them are truly U-G-L-Y, LOL! I often wonder WHO would wear such frocks to their wedding, HAHA!
ddubzz- i also think the models in them look so depressed and uncomfortable. and they almost never even fill the dress out- they look like the dresses are taped on sometimes!
@vistagirl-- my thoughts exactly!! I mean, this is supposed to make me want to wear this hideous dress?? The model looks so unhappy and emaciated!! Someone throw her a steak, LOL!!
I've seen some wacky dresses, but for me it's that pose the model is doing. Elbows jutting, hands on hips, hunched forward like she just took a punch to the gut. And why do bridal models always look younger than my flower girl? It's like she's a starving 12 year old hunchback with osteoporosis!
I have to agree about the pickup dresses. they look like cupcakes and so often look cheap. Also tiaras. not a fan. Tiaras are for princess and homecoming queens only. You're a bride, not a princess.
I personally want to bake a chocolate cake and FEED it to that girl in the magazines who is modeling the Monique Lhuillier gowns! And hit her hair stylist with my big purse.
Not only does she have the worst bouffant hairdo I've ever seen, but she looks like she's been on a hunger strike for 3 months.
Somebody feed the Lhuillier models! NOW!!!
Please bake this woman a cake! Or send her some cookies. Or a tub of lard. SOMETHING...!
stuck her finger in a light socket? my favorite bride photo ever is this emaciated girl? maybe boy? in the woods in a dress that is not even touching her boobs and her hair looks like she zapped herself then tried to put it up with sticks. a lot of them. something might have tried to nest on her. it is so funny, i'll see if i can find it.
Ok. I was looking at a wedding magazine a few months back and some of the guys I work with (one got married 3 weeks ago) said "Holy Jeebus Batman..is that a bride or a stripper?" ![]()
Um. this dress is a little...um....well...um...
she is lovely, but her dress leaves not enough for the imagination.

To add to the dresses in magazines - what about some of those poses?? Most of the time they don't even make the dress look better - like the back hunch... I am not going to be swinging from any bell towers in my dress, so why do you look like you should be? So weird.
I also do not like squatty cakes. This might be a weird one but for some reason really low wide cakes make me cringe. They just looked like stacked sheet cakes, or a cake that someone dropped and it spread out. Also swags on cakes. It's like your cake got T.P.-ed. Sorry to brides who love it - it's just my opinion. ![]()
I voted "flowers" because I feel like a lot of brides go Flower CRAZY! I can't get why someone would spend thousands and thousands on flowers. In the end, I don't think anyone really notices.
I'm actually not a fan of the bubble/mushroom bottom dress trend that's been popping up a lot in bridesmaids dresses (and normal dresses). I always think they look really strange and unflattering. I know there are a lot of girls who love them though, so no offense, I just don't get it!
I voted dress, b/c I've now seen 3 people wear the same DB gown and 3 others wear the same AA gown (not literally the same one, but the exact same style)... b/c they're very commercial and can be uber cheap. I don't want anyone to be wearing the same gown as me! ... Not to mention the horrid taste/bad gown decisions some people make. I'm all about individuality and expressing yourself... but come on... it is one day, but you'll have 100s of photos of you in a gown that you may later regret... like picking a style that clearly doesn't fit your body type or marks the decade the wedding took place... i.e. pickups that look like the fabric came out of a coffin... just don't do it! lol...
Oh, and just b/c it is 15k... it doesn't mean it automatically looks good! Some couture gowns can be just as ugly as a $99 DB sale gown.
Omg seriously, that girls hair is so awful. How can they find it attractive? The models in the dresses always look like they are just so miserable! I heard that it's because they don't want attention taken away from the dress??? Who knows. Lol. Maybe if they eat some cookies Bellenga sends them they'll be happy enough to smile?
Meowkers: I have this weird "hate- kinda like it a little bit" thing going on with tiaras! The bridal industry, my chosen bridal atelier in particular, makes me feel like I'm not a bride unless I have one to wear on my wedding day! On the other hand, it's so ridiculous- I am not the princess or queen of a country, and imo I've always thought the look is so silly. It's not like we're 5 playing dress up - we're getting married!!!!! BUT I won't hold it against anyone who does wear one, everyones tastes are different, and I'm sure someone will dislike something I do on my own wedding day!
Omg, is that stripper dress for real? I've seen it all.
I couldn't believe the cut-out wedding dress. I can't imagine anyone's grandma would want to see them walk down the aisle in the equivalent of a bra & a skirt!
I voted flowers. Because I hate peonies (and yeah, I know that they're a "traditional" wedding flower, not a "trend"). But still. HATE HATE HATE them. Not that you shouldn't like peonies, or that you shouldn't include them in your wedding, but I honestly don't see what all the hullabaloo is about regarding them. I just think that they're an ugly, overpriced bloom, and everytime someone posts a picture of their bouquet that they're so happy with I just have to bite my lip and not say anything because...ugh. I just can't tell them that it's beautiful when I think that the flowers are so darn ugly.
I also hate berries in arrangements, and other stuff like artichokes and asparagus and coxcomb that makes a bouquet look "textured". I think it looks awful! (And it's not that I don't like greenery, because I love bear grass and ferns and the like...even pinecones are nice!)
Sorry if I just totally made you feel insecure about your flower choice, anyone. I really don't care what flowers you choose, and if you LOVE peonies/textured arrangements and want to incorporate them into everything, GO FOR IT. I just definitely won't be doing it in my wedding. =)
I also hate really gaudy rings. Like this one: http://www.spencediamonds.com/ring-style-3972. Ugh! (Not to say that they can't look good on some people...but I just do NOT like them.)
@MsHymanRoth: Not usually in the bouquet, but I've definitely seen it in centrepiece arrangements!
Ooooh Meowkers-- I am so anti-tiara! The only brides I've ever seen wear tiaras were on Bridezilla though. So perhaps my reason for disliking tiaras so much is a little biased.
My FI is on the anti-tiara train too... I joked about wearing one (while watching an episode) and he said he wouldn't marry me if I wore one (nice, huh!?). "Tiaras are for 5 year old girls" Pshhh... tell that to the Bridezillas and Miss America!!
I chose flowers. Because i am not a big fan of the reception that looks like a florist explode a minute before the wedding and in order to hide the mess they scooped all the flowers up and shoved them into giant vases. But i also am not a fan of wedding dress models or the poses they have them do. Case and point---> see pictrue below. Also, most models look like they have a sever case of stomach cramps
i dont hate but i dont understand the obsession with white gold e-rings (yes, i hear the 99.9% of bees with white rings screaming at me). i dont dislike them but it seems the stores only stock white gold these days and every bride-to-be ive met in the past few years have had white gold
i must be old fashion as i never thought of anything other than yellow gold
CAKES - the cakes that look like they are toppling over. You know what I'm talking about. The Dr. Seuss-Mad Hatter-Meets Lisa Frank cakes. I can't stand them. Again, I know this is a matter of personal preference, but I just think they look so.very.tacky. I am all for bucking tradition and going with something new and different, but a cake that looks bloated and off-center? WHY?! How did this trend START?! Did someone make a crappy cake and then pretend it was a trend?! I just don't get it. ![]()
Let's send the models Butter of the Month Club. I mean, really.
@ Bellenga....ewww that woman is really gross. Excessively. And i TOTALLY SAW THAT DRESS in the shop. My friend and I kept laughing about it and it ticked the saleslady off. I wanted to try it on for a joke but I held back. It's so skankalicious!
You know, I have known people with real life eating disorders and seeing these models STRIVE to look like this (ok i understand SOME women are natural waifs, but these models just look starved excessively) makes me kind of sick knowing what some of my friends have gone through to achieve a healthy body image.
I hate the big monstrous queen tiaras. I like the hair combs/more subtle ones. Hence why I DIY'd mine, lol. Some are just crazy! Nothing sticking up 4" off my head please!
@Jeniphyr--that ring is only 1.88 carats and you think that's gaudy?! Yikes...don't look at mine
(i don't like that particular style tho, i like the halos just not that one)
Great Convo on her Ladies!! I like that we are all kind of thinking the same things as we peruse these magazine and bridal shoppes
1. Once again, agreeing that pick ups make you look like prom dresses- and 99.9% of us have been out of college for around 5 years- so we should be past this
2. Who ever started the anorexic/look like their in pain model discussion- I LOVE IE! Seriously- im a very slender gal, but lets get real- those chicas are not even close to the National Average size 10 girls out there!
3. mandalee0624 totally agree with you about alot of the dresses looking the same- I had this round a bout with myself- i originally chose a dress that everyone else loved and at one of my fittings realized it wasn't me and i had gone with a gown that wasn't me- don't fret or hate me- but yes i am a 2 dress bride, will only be wearing the new one, but found one like nothing i have seen on any of these sites
4. ejs4y8 - agree with you- don't look at mine either, I hate when people ask if mine is real.
The big thing with me- is these rings that put like 4+ diamonds directly next to eachother to try to create a larger look- it just kind of confuses me- or ones that try to have so much going on it may be real but looks like it's from avon-
Now adays- something i love are the unique things- but some of these couples are going so unique it's kind of from outer space
Oh, the illusion setting with the 4 small diamonds? It's not a bad way to go if you want the blingy look but can't afford it. At first glance you can't tell =]. But I'd be worried you could lose a diamond too easily. Yikes!
I wear a large, fake right hand ring, and funny, people DO ask if it's real. I just say it was my grandmothers. Psaw. If you're rude enough to ASK if my ring is real (it's a faux 2 carat canary, lol, but is not real fake looking unless it's dirty) then you're ignorant enough to be fooled. Muah ha ha. People ask that so often, it's so RUDE.
Next time someone asks me that, I'm going to ask if their breasts are real.
I have no idea what the designers of some very nice dresses are doing when they put these anorexic models into them. Maybe I don't have a good eye for beauty, and high fashion, but I don't want to look like that on my wedding day.
Also, I have determined the only reason they make all the models look like they stuck their finger in a light socket is because their hair is so unhealthy and weak from the lack of nutrition, there is no other choice. ;)
DRESSES: I agree with the comments on pickups in skirts. It looks like crumped paper/down comforter! So distracting! I also do not agree with dresses that have a sheer bodice- that is for after the wedding ladies!
OH GOD NO!!! PICK UP DRESSES!! My FMIL & FSIL really want me to wear a pick up dress. Dude. I'm 5 ft short. I have a little, although short, waist and a pretty decent rack. I would look like a marshmallow. Enough with the pickup dresses! His aunt likes tiaras and "those lacy Victorian dresses with the high collars". Ummmm.... my four yr old daughter could get away with the tiara.....me, not so much. FMIL has also made a point to tell me that she really doesn't like those "fitted mermaid style dresses or strapless dresses." That's why you're not invited to dress shop with me FMIL!! I should show her a picture of the stripper dress and tell her that's what I bought and watch her have a heart attack.
Also, I have seen a lot of pulled off to the side and big poofy curls and bags lately at bridal shows and in magazines. What the hell is that all about? Very Vanna White circa 1987.
Bridal ads where the brides look sweaty. And I agree, as my daughter would say "Eat a sammich!"
I notice there seems to be a trend among my friends lately of spending a ton of money to make it look as if you spent very little money. As in, paying a couple hundred for a 'simplistic' centerpiece by a trendy florist, or thousands for a couture gown that is so simple it could have been an off-the-rack white dress.
I don't have a problem with the final look - I think simple is elegant and beautiful! Seriously, though, why pay three times as much in order to get something you could have gotten for three times LESS.
Hee hee, I am originally from small, kind of 'country' town and pick-up skirts and tiaras definitely rule the roost there!
They have to grease up the models so they look like there is some dimension to their body =].
Teeheehee
Pick ups are still big in StL...i don't get it =(
Things I'm not a fan of:
Tiaras
Huge veils plunked right on the top of the head
Spiral curls in hair
Pick-up skirts on wedding gowns or bm dresses
Cheesy dance songs at the reception
Garter/Bouquet toss/dances
