What dress are you dying to see on a real bride? Do you think the models on the designer's websites are not realistic? Would increasing the size of the models on the designers website give you a better picture of what the dress would look like on you?
I think I'd just like it if they looked happy and stopped posing so oddly. I never get the super serious face when they are supposed to be brides.
I would like to see shorter models! More of a variety and more typical body types (and less airbrushing) would be nice too, but height is what really makes it hard for me to imagine dresses on me.
@Entangled: Yeah the doctoring of the photos to make the models look perfect is def a downside and yes there are alot of women that a shorter than the 5'10 models they use. So I too think they could mix it up a bit. I think they should really use larger models that are more realistic of the everyday woman. I hate that they only use models who are size -1. I'm not downing slim women Its just that most women are not that size.
Their dress size doesn't really bother me as much as their height. I am 5'9", but they put stools under those girls to make them look over 6'5" tall in every picture...it lengthens the skirt so you can see the whole dress, I get it, but it is not realistic.
I see someone has chosen size 0-2. I would like to know why you picked that size as opposed to a larger size?
I think we would all appreciate models that look a bit more realistic... precious few people are actually size zero and 5'10". I'm 5'1", and a dress that looks a certain way on a tall woman does not look the same on someone my height. It's difficult because a lot of the dresses I am interested in look much more glamorous on someone who is taller.
I don't want to stare at pretty clothes on larger girls. I'm sorry, but that's my truth. Yes, I know not a lot of 'real' people are size 0 (at least compared to a majority) but since I'm size 0 I want to see size 0 models.
However, I TOTALLY agree with shorter models! Yes, please pretty please short girls!
*As for the actaul question* what am I dying to see on a real bride? I really want to see some of Pinina Tournai's gowns on some real brides... you know the outrageous dresses, insansely expensive, with sheer bodies, I want to see those on real brides.
I think a variety of sizes and heights would be nice to see!
@ vmec: I also don't think the size of the girl diminishes the beauty of the dress, in fact I think its each individual girl that makes the dress more beautiful.
I actually feel like wedding dress models look pretty normal--definitely healthier than some high fashion girls I've seen on runways. I agree with @vmec: that it's nice to see a dress being modeled by a girl that's the same general size you are, and since I'm 6'0 and a size 4, I feel like they do a pretty good job of representing how a dress will look. I think it's sad, though, that the market only caters to one demographic. I usually get the short end of the stick when shopping since nobody sells my inseam length, so I know what it's like to go to a store and have nothing fit right!
I do NOT like all the computer-generated airbrushing and "trimming" that goes on after the photos have been taken. Some of those girls have been so digitally doctored that they look like plastic, and I imagine that all the re-touching also alters how the dress itself looks in the pictures. I also agree with PP that the weird posing is not at all helpful. As a bride looking for a dress, I didn't want to see art, I wanted to see what the dresses looked like!
I want to see this dress with somebody who's got some boobs and non stick arms.

Some of the size 0's bug me, but I don't necesssarily think the models should be size 12. I'd be happy with maybe 6 being the average. You can see how boobs, buts, and hips look in the gowns. The "hanger" girls aren't my favorite.
@kala_way: Oh wow, do you know the designer of that dress, it is so gorgeous!!!
@kala_way:I agree. I think somewhere around size 6 would be good. Size sixes usually have some kind of curves (even if they're slight) and you can get a pretty good idea from that I think.
You would think that in the U.K. there is enough clothes for girls 6.0 feet..
I'm 5.9 and in Netherlands kinda average size. No problems shopping.
I'm a size 10. But I prefer to watch cloths on slimmer models, with a bit of curves though.
I think seeing clothes on a size 8 would be fantastic. Would provide some size and curves without being too out of line from the size/shape of tiny girls.
Uber tall and uber skinny size 0s do nothing for me (I'm a size 12/14 with big boobs and junk in the trunk).
@NoaMarijn: now there are, especially since cropped trousers are in fashion. As a teenager, though, it was nearly impossible to find a 36" inseam trouser in the juniors section! Most Spanish designers seem to understand tall women, though, which is wonderful.
I'm 5'9" and size 6, so I'm not really bothered by wedding dress models, except that they don't have any boobies.
I say a size 6-8. I am plus size 16/18 and I appreciate seeing dresses on plus sized brides but it would be refreshing to see a nice size 6-8 brides in dresses instead of 0.
@kala_way: Oh my, that dress is beautiful! Who makes it?
I'm not "bothered" by skinny models, but sometimes they honestly don't do the dresses justice.
Plus size models are generally well-proportioned and generally gorgeous so I don't see anything wrong with having more wedding dresses modeled by them.
A corseted wedding dress won't do much to change the shape of a very slim girl but can do a lot to a larger girl. There's far more skill in dressing curves than the lack of them.
I think that choosing one size is exactly the opposite of what I want to see. I don't mind seeing clothing on some very thin models, it's that they are the only models that is the problem. If the models just went a size up, in other words, that wouldn't solve the problem for me. I'd like to see women in a variety of sizes modeling clothes so that more people can see themselves represented.
If I'm honest I want to see the dress or any clothing look as good as it can, and I find that when I see models that are bigger than normal model size I assume that the garment is going to make me look bigger. I think that it would be good for those dresses that do come in plus sizes to be modeled by both small and plus size models.
I agree with pretty much everyone above. I think they should have real sized women (I am a 0 but it would be nice to see bigger like an 8-12ish sized) and then also doing happy bride-y poses. Like smiling with a bouquet or something to that effect. I don't like the odd poses with the elbow sticking out and collarbone popping. You all know what I'm talking about.
@Lauren10.8.11: Yes, that pose always says to me "my dress is so uncomfortable that I'm crouching over in pain".
I like seeing dresses on skinny models. On a large model, there it too much variation...it's hard to know if your hips and torso will fill out the dress as theirs does. Also, I imagine there is MORE retouching on plus size pictures.
On top of that, the models used in bridal aren't stick thin unless you are watching the shows from fashion week. Even the, only a few use the same models that are used for the RTW shows.
BTW, the poll is unclear about what kind of sizing is being used. Higher end designers in bridal don't use vanity sizing. The models are probable wearing size 6 or 4 in bridal, not size 0. The cheaper bridal companies (Like DB) use the larger, vanity sizing that is common at mall stores.
If you want to understand the reasons for what the bridal companies fo, ceck out One Perfect Day by Rebecca Mead. It's a very good read and doesn't rail against the industry, just goes behind the scenes.
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: I'm not really interested in why they do what they do I'd just like to see models who are a little more like the average American woman. I don't like the weird posing and I dont like that they ONLY use models who are super slim.
Why is it that I see alot of posts requesting to see the dress they are interested in on an actual bride and not a model?
I like seeing dresses on real brides here because they aren't photo touched! It's not really about the size of the girl, it's about how the dress really looks in real light and on a body that hasn't been altered. I have a childhood friend who does modeling and I tell you what...she looks VERY different in magazines and in real life.
I know it would be a huge hassel for designers, but maybe they should just have multiple size pictures, like a regular model and a plus size model, of each dress, then everybody could be mostly happy xD
One of my least favorite models is the one who has on the Vera Wang White collection at David's Bridal! In this picture especially, I think she looks like she's holding on to the wall for support...probably because she doesn't eat enough calories. I want to mail her a sandwich!

And I SO agree with the dislike of weird poses. I also hate when they hold the flowers in front of an especially detailed part of the dress and don't offer any other pictures to show me what it looks like? Would it REALLY be so hard to put the dress on a manequin and just take some shots of the dress' details?!
@UK Bride: Yeah, I found that a Pronovias gown with midheels basically means no alterations (which will save a lot of money considering the amount of intricate lace they use....) I'm 5'11 and my god, jeans buying is hell!! The 3/4 sleeve fashion was pretty good and I'm loving the popularity of ballerinas at the moment, don't need the extra 6 inches stilettos give you!
@NoaMarijn: I'm Dutch too! :-D
@miz fizzix: Ha ha!! I thought the SAME thing about that model from the DB website! But I just think she looks like she's 12 years old or something! It bugs me when I look at little girls trying to play dress up in women's wedding gowns. I can't picture it on a "real" woman when the "model" looks like she's barely legal. Makes me not want to buy it or even look at the pictures. Ugh...
I like Maggie Sottero's website because she has REAL brides listed on her website so you can see what the dress looks like on others. Great job MS - bravo!
But the dress I would LOVE to see on a real bride would be Christina Wu 15449 - I just posted about it! :)
@kala_way: I have that dress on my pinterest, but the link there didn't work - thanks for giving me the right one! I'd love to see how it looks with boobs as well lol
Shorter models for sure! Most women aren't 6 foot tall. And I'd have them quit doing the weird slouch poses with their arms in odd angles.
I wanted to see model pics that showed the full perfect fantasy of a dress before seeing what happened to it when it was worn by a real woman with bulges and whatnot.
The best "real bride" info that I found what YouTube. I actually finalized my decision to get rid of my first dress and buy another when I saw the way it moved. The smooth, perfectly arranged satin on the skirt was all rumpled and dented as she moved down the runway. I figured if the fitted waist was creasing on the model, it would be a real mess on me after wearing it for a few hours.
@miz fizzix: I'm pretty sick of the double standard where overweight people get a free pass to criticize the bodies of slim people.
If I picked out a picture of a plus size model and make a comment about how her weight is making her look like she's about to keel over, I'd be banned from the Weddingbee.
But it's perfectly OK to say that a woman who is a healthy weight looks like she's going to faint and needs a sandwich.
