I have been shopping online for dress ideas and am finding that what is classified as beach or informal often looks quite formal to me. It makes me wonder if my idea of formality is out of sync with the wedding industry. I see satin or sheen as more formal and added beading or embellishment as increasing the formality or perhaps the “traditional bride” factor.
What features of a dress do you consider make it formal vs. informal?

Some of the time I think that these descriptions are almost random! Much like the word “vintage”!
I’ve always assumed that satin and heavy beading are formal elements and certainly, any dress described as suitable for a beach wedding would be likely to be lighter or less structured.

I’ve been looking for a more informal dress for an outdoor wedding, and totally get what you mean. I’ve been taking into account fabric weight and length, with fabric choice/embellishment being the primary factors. A heavier, longer, more structured dress is more formal to me. But a long dress made of light fabric could still count as informal.
I assume you’re asking because you’re looking for a more informal dress. It probably goes without saying, but you should definitely try less traditional/non-wedding stores, like Modcloth.com or shopruche.com. And definitely Etsy and Ebay. If you’re looking for more traditional places to shop, Ann Taylor and J Crew both have good selections of what I would consider less formal wedding dresses. Good luck!
