i think it's supposed to smooth out the skin and also make the foundation stay on your face for longer. i had never used it either, until i found i needed it for my wedding day make up (which I did myself)
The primer I use right now for my face also soaks up oil and prevents shine in addition to smoothing things out. The primer I use for my eyelids does the same thing and it prevents my eyeshadow from creasing.
Primer does a few things: evens out skin texture, fills in small lines, helps foundation last MUCH longer, and in some cases (depending on which one you choose) can help cover imperfections (like redness, etc) in your skin.
I use foundation primer all the time (i'm an actress, so I do a lot of makeup for shows/events). My favorite is smashbox photo finish is my favorite!

Sephora has good prices for it, too!
I don't think my link worked. Clearly, I am still asleep, as I used the word "favorite" like 6 times in one sentence.
Here's the Sephora link:

I've seen in other posts about primer that Monistat's Chafing Relief Powder-Gel (not the yeast infection treatment) is the same formula as expensive face primers, including Smashbox. I was a little weirded out at first, but I had to try it considering it's like $30 cheaper! It works amazingly!
@MaggieGirl I bought and tried out that powder gel last night...HOLY CRAP! You were right! All oil and shine were gone in NO time, and never came back! I'm taking it with me to my trial tomorrow, and wearing it on the wedding day (Saturday!) This is the best thing I've learned on this site, for sure!
If it's silicon based, it really helps to fill in pores and lines and make a smooth base for your foundation. It also keeps the foundation in place.
I use a primer by DHC I dont wear foundation and it makes it so im not oily :) I will have to check out the stuff you guys are talking about where did you get it?
Another tip - if you don't use primer all the time, and just want it for your wedding day, you can buy "travel" sizes of all of the Smashbox primers (they have a few - the original, sensitive skin, redness control, etc.) right by the checkout at Sephora. The small sizes are MUCH cheaper and will last for dozens of uses.
Also, if you buy something at Sephora (or CVS for that matter) and decide you don't like it - even after it's been opened and used - you can return it with the receipt for a full refund. I used the return option A LOT as I was looking for the perfect components for my DIY wedding makeup.
Target allows you to purchase and "try out" cosmetics and if you don't like it for whatever reason you can return it... even if you've opened it and used it! They simply cancel it out and throw it away after you return it. I've been buying and trying liquid foundations looking for one that I can use on my wedding day that will look good in photos. I've gotten several recommendations for expensive brands on here but I don't have a sephora or an ulta or anything like that near me, so I would have to purchase online and it would be so difficult to get the right shade buying online so I'm stuck looking for a drugstore brand or a makeup counter brand.
I use victoria secrets primer, i swear it works exactly like, if not better, than the smashbox primer. It is the same consistancy and only 16 bucks! It definately helps smoooth out my skin and doesnt break me out. It give me a "pore-less" look!

I've seen lots of people talk about using a primer on their face prior to putting on makeup.
I don't usually wear foundation, so would I even need to use a primer? What exactly does a primer do?
