husband and i have already gotten married, but are having a ceremony a year after the date because he was overseas and his family and friends want to come and witness it, and as we just got married with my parents there at the courthouse, my entire family will be there as well. but what is a marriage blessing? does it only happen at a church? can it be done at a vow renewal? thanks !

Our non-denominational officiant (who is ordained with a church) had a marriage blessing at our ceremony (something along the lines of “May you marriage be free from blah blah blah…”) and it’s basically a set of wishes and good thoughts for your marriage, like no loneliness, no rain, no cold, wonderful journey, etc. Our wedding was not at a church. In the ceremony, ours happened right before the pronouncement.
I think if you are having a vow renewal, you could still get a marriage blessing in theory. I mean, you are blessing the marriage itself, just like how people bless meals, children, etc. It’s not a wedding blessing, which would necessitate a wedding.
