Is it one that’s shorter or longer than the average 28 day cycle by __ days? Is it a cycle that’s not exactly the same length every month? Just wondering, and can’t seem to Google my way into an answer. Any ideas?

I think it’s generally described as irregular if it’s more than, say, 2 days of variance in your cycles each month. i.e., a cycle between 25 – 27 days would probably be seen as normal; 23 – 30 is likely seen as irregular.
But I’m with you – in my reading, it seems to be a very subjective diagnosis. That said, on the plus side, it often has no other implications besides…you’re irregular!

sometimes one ovary could be on one schedule while the other ovary is on another.
for me, one side is on 28 days cycle while the other one is on a 27 day cycle.
i know it switches because i always get a giant zit on my chin on the side that releases the egg.

Lots of women don’t have 28 day cycles so I would say a cycle that falls outside of YOUR normal. If you usually have a 35 day cycle and then suddenly have a 27 day cycle, I would call that one irregular. Same if you get your period like clockwork on CD28 but then one cycle have a ton of stress and don’t get your period until CD33 – I’d call that irregular.
Also, some people just don’t have consistent cycles with obvious patterns. I’m one of those people and I call myself “regularly irregular”, lol. My cycles range substantially and I just don’t really have a normal. But if you always have 35 day cycles, I wouldn’t say you’re always irregular.

Thanks for the feedback, very useful! I’ve been off the pill since July. The first two cycles were 30 days; the next two have been 27 days. Probably still too soon to know my “regular”. Using OPKs next cycle to help figure things out!

“Regular” cycles are usually between 24-35 days, so anything outside that is “irregular.” I agree that it matters more what’s normal for you, but your cycles sound really regular so far – don’t need to be the exact same every month.

You could have a 40 day cycle and be regular. It’s the varying lengths or cycles and ovulation days that makes it irregular. Mine are irregular. I’ll have a 32 day cycle and then a 40 day cycle. Charting my cycles have helped me be more confident when we TTC When My fertile days are.
