I am not tied to one tradition– I think growing up we always had an angel… but not totally sure. My FI will have our first tree together this year too– in fact I’m leaving in an hour to go meet him and buy it!– and I’d love to have a star. For us it’s symbolic, b/c the first present he ever bought me was having a star named after me. It’s very US.

As for a topless tree… NO! You could always make a star (way easier than an angel, I would think) with cardboard and glitter. Or go to a craft shop or fabric store… You must be able to find something better than crazy spikes somewhere!

We aren’t religious so we didn’t want an angel and all of the stars I’ve seen are too glittery for my taste. I found a cute reindeer topper at Pottery Barn, but it’s a bit over budget at the moment so I’ll wait until the after-christmas sales and use it next year. This year we are putting a santa hat on the top of our tree!

We used a Star. I just think they look pretty on top of trees. Angels are pretty, but doll-like things creep me out a bit and it would be up there…just staring at me

@LaPetiote:  We have a lightweight angel- anything too heavy doesn’t seem to sit right and just topples over. I recall having a similar angel when we were growing up!

Ooh good question! I’ve always grown up with a specific angel topper, but we’re not religious so I don’t really want to use it (I’m keeping the angel as a keepsake of my childhood, though, just in a box in the back of the closet). I think that will be a fun activity with my husband, to go pick out a tree topper together to use on our first married-Christmas and onward for our future family Christmas trees…. dawww.

Following this thread for ideas, now!

We always used an angel at home, and that’s what I like best, but in my apartment so far I’ve just used a star because it was cheap at Canadian Tire and I didn’t want to invest in a fancy angel :P. Once I have a real house where I can fit a proper tree I’ll finally buy a nice angel for on top!

We didn’t get one, yet. We are also in the “buy a few things a year” phase and this year we got a skirt…so no topper yet.
