It’s only a few more months until my wedding. Eek! I’ve been going over wedding expenses and am pretty surprised at what I found. We’ve been engaged for a little less than two years and along the way have made vendor payments. I guess when things are spread out over a long span the costs don’t seem that much. I’ve noticed we’ve gone over our original budget by $3,000! *faints*
I don’t know if that’s normal or not. I hear it’s pretty normal to go over the mark a little, but geez. That’s sticker shock to me.
I am pretty surprised to find that the most expensive wedding cost so far has been: my wedding dress! My dress costs $2,316. Looking back, I should not have spent that much on it. But I fell in love, and this was at the very beginning of planning, so we had the money.
What has been your most expensive wedding cost so far? Are you surprised by it? Is there a bigger cost on the horizon? Have you gone over budget? If so, by how much?

SprinkleDonut: Our most expensive cost was catering! a 3 course meal, canapes and evening ploughman buffet for £3,660 (not sure how that comes out in $!)
Next most expensive was our venue, but after that the costs seem to tail off significantly (thank goodness!)

Our most expensive item is catering. Ironically, catering is one of the few items we came under budget on. For the other big ticket items, we’ve either stayed right on budget or exceeded it slightly.

I’m with PP. Food and beverage was by far the biggest expense.

SprinkleDonut: Ours is food and drink: it’s come in at over $8k for the food (for 65 covers for both the day and evening; that includes 5 canapes pp, a 3 course meal, and a buffet with a selection of 8 items), and $7700 for the drinks. It accounts for over 30% of our budget if you include the rings and honeymoon, and 40% of you don’t.
Next biggest cost was my outfit, partly due to the two pairs of designer shoes and ‘proper’ jewellery (ie not costume) that I plan to wear again (the dress itself wasn’t crazy expensive), and then next after that is photography.

Same as PPs the food and drink. We’re not supplying a great amount of drink (welcoming and with wedding breakfast) as per UK norm, but still it’s the most expensive thing. And actually I think it should be. People will forgive and forget simple centrepieces but they remember terrible food!!

Photographer was the most expensive at $2100, follwed by my attire with $1200 and dinner buffet food at $1100.

SprinkleDonut: Our most expensive thing will be the food/alcohol but we are not paying for that as we are receiving it as a gift for the wedding. I voted for the photographer because we are paying for that ourselves which is close to 4K plus we did our engagement shoot at a Major League Baseball Park which was something that was so us but $250 extra (Don’t regret it in the least).

Our biggest expenses are pretty close with the photography and the catering. Both are likely going to cost $1400 each. I am truly trying to stick to a small budget so those splurges are considerably higher than any other individual cost! Without those expenses in it the wedding would probably cost under $1000… there’d just be no food or pictures!

Venue, then (going to be) Catering, then Photography

Easily the food and drink – catering is not cheap here and it cost around 11-12k to feed and supply alcohol to 85 people.

SprinkleDonut: Our biggest expense has easily been our venue, but that also includes food, top shelf open bar, and linens, so this is very unsurprising. Our second largest expense is the live band we booked, also unsurprising. Our third largest expense is florals — this was VERY surprising to me!
There are definitely no larger costs in the horizon, but the next big purchase will be my dress. It’s still less expensive than the venue/food/booze, band, flowers, photographer, etc.

Ours is easliy the venue/decor. Our reception venue came with all centerpieces, bouquets, arrangments, linens, and any other decor that will be used in the church and reception

My venue is all inclusive so everything but bar, photographer, DJ, and officiant is included.
