I just read Millie's Fling by Jill Mansell.
It's a very light, sweet endearing British Chick Lit (much like Sophie Kinsella).
I really liked it and now have a bunch of other Jill Mansell's I'm waiting for at the library.
Night Road by Kristin Hannah.
REALLY good. I couldn't put it down. Cried at two different parts and I'm not a crier. It was either the book or my emotions are running high lately.
Wings (the first in the Laurel Series) by Aprilynne Pike is also really good. It's a little mystical fearie tale. This is available for free right now from B&N for the Nook!
I'm currently waiting for book#2 Spells from the library.

What about you?
What good books have you read lately?
What books are you waiting to read?
I'm reading Anita Shreve Testimony right now. Its not very good, but I want to know how it ends.
I have Jen Lancasters next book pre-ordered through Amazon. It comes out mid May and I can't wait. Love her!!
I just read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. (Amazing.) Today I bought Incendiary and Little Bee by Chris Cleave so I'll probably start one of those next.
I just read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series (I know, late to the party), and I'm reading The Tiger's Wife right now. So good!
I just started Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (so far so good). I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (really good but for some reason could not get into the second one when I started it... I'll have to try again when I finish Never Let Me Go).
@Bostongrl25: I have read a lot of books by her and she's pretty give or take, but The Pilot's Wife blew me away. I thought it was a great book.
I'm reading The Devil's Queen by Jeanne Kalogridis and Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella. I also have a book by Patricia Cornwell in my pile, it is one of her Kay Scarpetta novels but I can't remember which one. They're always the perfect read when I'm distracted though.
@Bostongrl25:I LOVE Jen Lancaster!!! I went to a book reading of hers when "Such a Pretty Fat" came out. She is hysterical. I can polish off one of her books in a day (but then I'm sad when I finish!)
Right now I'm making my way through Liza Palmer's books (more serious chick lit). I just finished "Conversations with a Fat Girl" and I am now reading "A Field Guide to Burying your Parents".
@future mrs j: I LOVE Never Let Me Go!
I'm currently reading Belle Weather by Cecila Rivenbark (she's hilarious!) and Winter Girls by Laurie Halse Anderson.
I just finished Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner, and I'm about to start Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin.
I just finished "The Inner Circle" by Brad Meltzer and "The Fifth Vial" by Michael Palmer.
I typically read medical/mystery fiction books with lots of basis in fact.
Totally late, but Water for Elephants and LOVE it! Also eagerly awaiting the May release of the next Sookie Stackhouse. On my bedside table are Lonesome Dove, Bitch is the New Black and 7 Secrets to Making Marriage Work. Yeah. I'm all over the place!
I just finished Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese, such an amazing book. Next on my list is My on Country: A Doctor's Story also by Verghese or The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
I recently finished "Sing You Home" by Jodi Picoult. I thought it was good but it wasn't my favorite book of hers. I felt like it was rushed at the end and it could have used some extra chapters.
I'm about to start reading Pretty Little Liars #2 (i have no idea which one it is, just that it's second in the series). Lame, I know. I love the show & i have to know what's going on! I don't want to wait forever. I want to read to full series.
I just got Ida May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth and the Guide to Breastfeeding. So, i'll be jumping into those ASAP!
@Gerbera:It's good to hear you enjoyed "Night Road." That one is definitely on my to-read list.
I also want to re-read all of the Harry Potter's before the movie comes out, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
I finished James Patterson's "Toys" and the latest Dean Koontz, the title of which escapes me at the moment. I just bought a couple of Sherrilyn Kenyon books which I expect to be good reads.
I'm re-reading the HP series before the final flick comes out - just started re-reading Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince. I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into Deathly Hallows again to see what little details I've forgotten since last time.
Other than that, I'm reading a few books at the moment: The Girl Who Played With Fire (wow, am I struggling getting into this one or WHAT?), The Clan of the Cave Bear (again, re-reading because I just bought the final book that's just come out) & the final John Marsden/Tomorrow When the War Began novel.
I always have so many going at once!
I held off on the Hunger Games but I finally picked them up and am hooked- I started Mockingjay over the weekend!
The second one was the best in my opinion! The third- that one was HARD to get into too- those swedes and their similar names :)
The Tiger's Wife sounds like a gripping storyline. Let us know how it is!
Night Road was truly wonderful. Firefly Lane was the first of her books I read that really drew me to Kristin Hannah. Night Road was even more wonderful.
So many conflicting emotions.
@ohheavenlyday: I just finished that, too; it was wonderful, wasn't it? I also read Little Bee pretty recently and liked it, but not the same way I liked Henrietta.
I just finished Running the Books by Avi Steinberg, a book about his time as an assistant prison librarian, and True Notebooks by Mark Salzman, a book about his time volunteering as a writing teacher in a juvenile detention center. We're doing a unit in one of my classes on prison libraries, so I thought I'd read up! These were both pretty good.
I also just finished the newest Chelsea Cain novel and it was pretty meh. I liked Heartsick more than I should have, but this time she seemed to fall victim to the formulaic approach this genre (mystery/thriller) so often takes. Booo.
Next up is a book by Sarah Vowell on the US' annexing of Hawaii etc., which I'm looking forward to; I've heard good things about her. I'm also listening to a book on CD (long commute): Emma Donoghue's Room. So far I have mixed feelings.
@CanAmBride: Another one here for Jen Lancaster! Can't wait for her new book. Also have the new Mary Kay Andrews on preorder.
I just finished the 3 Weissmans of Westport by Cathleen Schine, highly recommended by the NY Times but I thought it sucked. Just didn't get much out of it. 3 women's lives were turned upside down and somehow still ended up kind of depressing lol
Currently working through a book called Project Everlasting, a super cute nonfiction read where two bachelors travel the country, interviewing couples married 50+ years, asking their secrets.
@Seaside: Project Everlasting sounds right up my alley. I'm putting that on hold at my library as we speak.
I'm reading Gail Collins' "When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present." It's a fascinating look at the various women's movements and how women's role in American society has changed. I really really recommend it.
I kinda read several books at the same time... beofre SO got me a Kindle, I'd have one in each room and just pick it up and continue from where I left off, so one in the living room, one in the office, one in the bedroom (and ok, one in the bathroom - but that's for bubble baths!)
Currently reading 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James and 'Treason' by Ann Coulter, 'Faces in Time', Lewis Aleman, and 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'
Just finfished reading Ayn Rand's 'Anthem', 'Deconstructing Obama', Jack Cashill, 'The Obama Diaries' Laura Ingrahm (sorry not his biggest fan - don't hate me) 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility' by Jane Austen (not the best 'Waiting" books), and Larsson's 'Girl who played with Fire', but not sure I wa to read the next one - it was good, but not great.
Plan on reading 'Never Let Me Go' soon, along with all the Harry Potter books like the poster above before the final movie (besides, I kinda read them once a year, anyway, just like 'Lord of the Rings' and 'A Christmas Carol' - it's seasonal for me).
This is a great thread - I've been bugging so many people in my life for book suggestions. I finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I'm almost done with the second. Also, Water for Elephants was fantasssstic.
Yeah, I'm months behind :)
I just finished reading
Everything is Illuminated - Jonathan Safran Foer
very funny at times, but also very sad book.
House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski ...it is.. an interesting book. not quite paranormal.. not quite horror.. maybe a subtle horror. The way the book is written it took me 2weeks to finish (including reading all the footnotes)
Just finished reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Amazing story, its fascinating. Next up is The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
Just read Bonk by Mary Roach: . It was suggested to me by my bookstore friend and is absolutely hilarious. Definitely recommend.
Next up is a re-reading of Home by Julie Andrews: . I just pink-puffy-heart her so hardcore.
Better late than never, just finished The Hunger Games, now gotta wait on my son to finish the 2nd one. I was also looking forward to the last Jean Auel book in her Clan of the Cave Bear series, but after reading all the bad reviews I'm not so sure.
@jaguar: Please let me know what you think about The Land of Painted Caves, ok? :)
I'm currently reading the Eve Duncan Series by Iris Johansen. I love them!! I'm on book #7. I feel like I'm never going to catch up because she keeps writing more but I'm so addicted I almost don't want her to stop. Has anyone else read them??
I just filled up my allowed holds at the library and only got about halfway through the thread! Great recs, guys :)
Omg! So glad I found this thread! I've been looking for good books to read.
I just read, "Water for Elephants" and am dying to read another good book! I read it in less than a week (it took that long because I had other things to do...boo) Let's see, next on my list is The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. But I'm waiting for it to come in paperback, so for now I'm just dying to find another good one!
I'm not usually a fan of non-fiction but this sounds interesting! Got it on my library hold list!
I loved loved The Help!
--
I really did give the Dragon Tattoo book a good try. But I really could not get into it. But because so many of you love it I've got it on the bottom bottom of my TBR pile. hehe.
I have nothing to read right now -waaah- waiting for something to become available on my library hold list.
I just read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, loved it! When classes are over I plan on reading it's sequel next.
Reading a lot for school mainly, and for class I just read A Boy Called It, which was just a sad and horrific read.
Outside of class, I pilfered FSIL's copy of The Red Pyramid (part of the new series by the Percy Jackson author). Totally not ashamed to admit it, but its a great book :)
I just finished readin:
The Hot Zone and The Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston
The Art of Racing the Rain- I can't remember who it's by, but it's a great read for animal lovers. It's written from the dog's point of view. Had me in tears by the end.
I'm about to start reading Water for Elephants and several other Richard Preston books whenever I recharge my Kindle :)
I just got Atlas Shrugged in the mail. I can't believe I never had to read this in college, especially with my degree.
I'm reading "English" by Wang Gang & then Chelsea Handlers "My Horizontal Life" on my Kindle.
Just finished "The rude awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict" ... err. It was something to read?
Oh. And I have a feeling I'll be re-reading Passionate Uprisings & Woman in Berlin: A Diary over the next two days to study for an exam.
I am working on reading "The Other End of the Leash", by Patricia B. McConnell. It was recommended to me by fellow dog owners, as I have got myself a terrible humper.
If you like dogs and are into training and understanding dogs, this is a great book. I've got it on the Kindle - not too far into it, but I haven't had free time to read with everything going on at work.
Just read "Travel as a Political Act", and getting ready to read "The Places in Between".
