@PaisleyMedic:  This is goofy but I think it depends on location and where you’re at. I live in Michigan and I’m 5’7 and considered average and a lot of times considered short actaully. My high school graduaitng class the girls “normal height” was 5’9. Almost all my girlfriends are taller than me! So really, I think it depends on location! lol

@PaisleyMedic:  I know what you mean. I am 5’7, I consider myself  average. So I think the height you are and the people you spend the most time with personally changes what you consider tall/short..So I am including guys too….My SO is 6’5″….

For girls:

Short: 5’2″ or under

Average: 5’3″ to 5’8″

Tall: 5’9″ and up

For guys:

Short: 5’7″ and under

Average: 5’8″ to 5’11”

Tall: 6’0″ and up

Also, just have to say. I have a friend who is 5″5″, and she refers to herself as “so short and petite”. It irritates the HELL out of me. She is not short at all. She is well within the average in the US.

Im 5’4″… I’m always referred to as short. Like always.

I personally consider 5’2″ and under petite, 5’3″-5’6″ average, and 5’7″+ tall.

I’m 5′ 8″ and consider myself average to tall.

So I guess I would condsider

  • At or Under 5’3″ – Short
  • 5’4″ to 5’7″ – Average
  • 5’8″ Up – Tall

I’m 5’8 and people think I am some gigantic lochness monster half of the time. I consider myself tall, but I consider to be REALLY tall 5’10- over 6 ft.

Really short to be 5’1 and under and everyone else just kind of falls in the middle for me

The only issue I have with average height of women in the US is that it takes into account a LOT of very little, very old ladies! Women have gotten taller over the last couple of generations.

My Grandmother swears she was the tallest woman she ever ran across in the 50s, but at 5’7″, she’s only slightly tall now!

I think for young women,

Less than 4’10” is REALLY short

4’11”-5’3″ is short

5’3″-5’7″ is average

5’8″-6″ is tall

And anything over 6″ is REALLY tall!

I’m 5’3″ and have always been considered “short” (by others and myself!)

So I’d say for women:
Short: Under 5’4″
Average: 5’4″-5’9″
Tall: Over 5’9″

For men…
Short: Under 5’7″
Average: 5’7″-6′
Tall: Over 6′

Interesting…I had to explain to my FI the other day that being petite had nothing to do with being thin. He was baffled when I picked a dress out for his mom is a 14p. But she’s still 5’2.”

For me….

under 4’10” – possible medical disorder…dwarfism

4’11” to 5’3″ – short/petite

5’4″ to 5’7″ – average

5’8″ to 6’1″ – tall (I fall in this category)

6’2″-6’4″ – tall as shit

6’5 and up – possible medical abnormality….gigantism

I think some people use the word petite to describe skinny. Petite refers to height only (i.e. someone can be plus size & petite)

I have a little bit of a skewed perception from playing college basketball (and being 6’2″)

Short – anything under 5’6″

Average – between 5’6″ and 5’10”

Tall – between 5’10” and 6’4″

Really tall – over 6’4″

It’s all about perspective 🙂

1) I’m 5’2″ and am certainly considered short. I also happen to have a very petite frame in general though so my small stature is noticed more often than my height.

I think with wedding dress fit if you’re 5’2″ you still have a “short” frame if you’re wearing 4 inch heels, the dress does not fit as if you are 5’6″. So I guess if people are looking for short bride dress advice, you still have the same concerns regardless of heel height.

2) petite and short are not the same thing. You can be 5’9 with super long legs and need petite blouses for your short midsection or you can be 5’0″ and not have the shape for many petite clothes.

@QuirkySocialite:  I know you aren’t trying to be mean and you probably don’t say anything inrl but I can’t tell you how many people have asked whats wrong with me because of my height (4’10”) assuming I’m sick or have a disorder or something. It sucks to hear because there is nothing wrong with me and it makes me feel terrible about myself. It took a long time for me to be ok with my height and now I gladly tell people how tall I am but it always takes me to a negative place when people assume sometging is wrong with me.   So just be careful with your assumptions when you come across someone who is really short or tall.

I say under 5’3″ is short and someone over 5’8″ is tall
