I think it was from all the people telling the OP that she was rude, immature, etc etc etc. A personal attack is saying (just for example!) “Stephanie… you are clearly a stupid b*tch bc you don’t know what a personal attack is.” It’s unnecessary and harsh. The other thread had taken a turn down unicorn alley but a few people brought it back to nasty lane and I think Mr. Bee just thought it had run its course and was unnecessary.

ETA: seriously… just an example. You seem like a very nice and intelligent person ๐Ÿ™‚

A personal attack is when one user attacks another user.

For example, it’s one thing to say that you disagree with me and that you think I am totally dead wrong. But if you were to say: “Mr. Bee, you are a moron and an #@$^ing loser to boot”… that would be considered a personal attack.

Personal attacks are dangerous because they tend to cause an escalating series of counter-attacks… and the topics get off-base and become personal, rather than about the original topic.

Second CorgiTales…  Additionally the B word was thrown out there.  I say this only to point out that the “personal attacks” were not just “rude” and “immature,” which some may not consider to be harsh enough for the thread to be deleted.

Yeah it was at the very end.  I only saw it because I had not yet posted on there and was gonna say something but it got closed!

Some users have a hard time separating the action/topic from the person.  Another example would be:

I completely disagree with what you are doing because it is [a selfish act].

Versus a personal attack which would be more like:

I think wanting to do [such and such a thing] makes you a selfish person.

Ambiguous cases?

That’s selfish/a selfish idea.  (Hard to read without context.)

Generally you can just ask yourself whether you are arguing for or against the topic, or describing the OP in a certain way instead.  If you’re trying to describe the OP, you are probably already in shady territory.

The topic ‘what is a personal attack?’ is closed to new replies.
