At college we had "listserv" and was just a mass mailing list....like if you wanted to let everyone know about your clubs bake sale, you used "listserv"
Is that what you are talkin bout?
@Eva Peron: Yes, but there are apparently groups you can join, I don't know how to find them.

Can someone explain to me in non-tech terms what listerv is and how I find and join a local group? There doesn't seem to be any website devoted to the different groups so how would you even know one exists?
