For us the things that were really essential were a

  • bouncy seat
  • swaddling blankets
  • onesies
  • sleepers
  • a breast pump
  • bottles
  • diapers
  • monitor
  • sound machine (we have creaky wood floors)
  • changing pad
  • crib/mattress/sheets
  • car seat
  • stroller (snap n go is a great first stroller, that you just snap the carseat into)
  • thermometer
  • nail clippers
  • tub (we used a hammock rather than a tub or bathed/showered with him, so we didn’t use it much)

We skipped a bottle warmer, wipe warmer, swing, and high chair, bumbo, boppy pillow. We liked that DS learned to take bottles at any temp, and when we were out of the house we weren’t looking for a way to heat the milk. We used a booster seat instead of a regular high chair, which saved space in our dining room. I had a boppy, but it wasn’t any more helpful than a regular pillow. The bumbo is only really able to be used for 2ish months, so we skipped it. We skipped the swing because it was expensive, some babies don’t like them and we didn’t have a lot of space.

The extras that we really loved, but you don’t really need were:

  • carrier (first a baby bjorn active, which I sold and replaced with a Boba)
  • jogging stroller
  • pack n play
