photoshop is a photo editing program, it's not already on your computer, you have to purchase it (it's quite expensive) or find someone that might have a copy for you to install. Depending on the project there are other options/free programs you might be able to use, or there's a bunch of us bees on here that have the program that might be able to help you out :)
marlew pretty much summed it up on what photoshop is. There are tons of different kinds.
What kind of DIYs are you taking about?
bobbypinpearls---mostly labels. i want to make round lables with the wording the goes around the circle with the date or monogram in the center. is that too much to ask!? i just want options with graphics instead of cutting and pasting on word. thanks, i will look into it.
@jen - are you buying the pages with the circle stickers all set up and you just have to print on them? I am more than happy to help if you need it,
send me a message if you want
@Jen and Jake's Wedding - There is also a bit of a "learning curve" with Photoshop. It's not really a beginner's program, that you can easily open up and create stuff in. You may want to find someone who'll help you to create them.
It's a professional photo editing software and it'll set you back like $700.
You can make labels in Word, actually. I do that all the time. Avery has free downloadable software, you buy the stickers at like, Office Depot, then line up and calibrate your printer and print them. You can do graphics, too.
Photoshop is a bit difficult to use. I know this because my fiancee uses it quite often and when I've tried to play with it, I couldn't figure it out. You might want to ask a professional to make the labels for you or use software that is easier to use.
@ejs4y8 - we got the full versions of Photoshop, Dreamworks, and something else (can't remember) for about $275 when R bought his MacBook Pro! I think it was some sort of student discount?
But yes, there's definitely a learning curve. I still am shaky in it, and I've been playing around for a few years.
@lilyfaith, it was probably the student version with the discount. Did you get the CS4 or the Elements version? That's seriously a good price though! I have the full version, whatever that is, and it's spendy.
I also took a class in photoshop. I don't think I would have ever figured it out otherwise =\
You can also buy a card/label maker software -- they're much more customizable than word, and only costs about $20 or $30.
You can do a lot of the same things with the Microsoft suite between Word and Publisher
CS4! It's amazing. :) It doesn't seem any different?
Now if only I really knew the ins and outs of it.
I don't know, but there IS a student version and a regular version. The student version is 80% off the regular version price. I have the regular version and it was nowhere NEAR $275 so i was like WTF when you said $275. Sweet deal. It's probably the same for 90% of the levels, though...maybe until you get to the "professional" type features.
I use Photoshop for work so if anyone needs help or tips let me know! :0)
I got the whole Adobe suite for $199 through my school when I bought my new MacBookPro. InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and a few more things.
And I have been using Photoshop since I was about 14, so yeah, there is a slight learning curve.. But I also think you can learn a lot from just playing with it.
If you do decide to use Photoshop (or Illustrator is actually better for what you're doing), you can get a 30 day free trial from Adobe.com. You can download the program right off the website and install it. If you can finish your project in less than 30 days, it is pretty amazing software.
@ EVERYONE, thanks for the info. i have used word and avery documents but the 60 day trial just expired. thats why i was wondering about photo shop. i just don't use word or other office doc's enough to justify spending over $100 on the software right now. thanks for the tips, i will keep looking.
@ klovesj, i will check that program out.
