I'm hoping my homemade baby quilt makes the top of my friend's list! So darn cute.
if you're crafty at all, homemade things are great! Homemade knit booties or baby hats....swoon. I have some of mine from when i was teeny tiny that my grandma made me. They're just precious.
Gift cards to Babies R Us or other regular stores like Walmart=awesome
Size 1 diapers=awesome
I would avoid buying stuffed animals or any newborn clothes or 0-3 month clothes. EVERYONE has been buying them for us and we have more probably than our baby will use every. Buy bigger clothes (keeping in mind the season).
Buying them a cool pregnancy book or baby book (like What to Expect the First Year or Mommy Calls by Tanya Altman.
Newborn size diapers! Baby shampoo and lotion. Infant tylenol, Little Tummies gas relief drops, gripe water, etc. My fave gifts were a baby bathtub full of bath supplies and a first aid box with a large assortment of infant medicines. It was really nice the first time my daughter had gas pains to be able to have something on hand to give her rather than going out to the drug store. The same will go, I'm sure, for infant tylenol and the baby chest rub for colds I have.
Oh I have to second the homemade gifts!! My mom is getting my DD a homemade quilt and I cannot wait to see it.
Oh, also, I'm not sure how much you want to spend, but 5 of our friends pitched in and got us a Flip video camera (they are about $150), which is awesome not just as a baby gift but as a gift in general. We have been making loads of videos of our little one.
i was going to say a gift card to a materinty store, but it looks like you've already covered that!
I loved the diaper cake my mom made for my shower. She used 3 different sized diapers one for each tier. Then she made flowers out of washclothers. She wrapped a ribbon around each tier to attach the flowers and then put different little toys under the ribbon. You could put Desitin or other baby medicines they might use. It was really cute and it had a bunch of needed items on the cake!
I'd say a gift certificate for a massage or spa day... I'm a massage therapist and have massage therapist friends so I end up getting atleast one a month and it is sooo nice!
NorthernAZ- we need you over here in Seattle Stat! I feel so run over right now :)
My friends have been knitting... They make the cutest hats and booties and stuff. If you have any DIY talent it would be great to channel it into baby stuff!
Homemade stuff is great!!
but my favorite gift i got, other than all the stuff i needed, was a necklace from my girlfriend. It has my sons name engraved on a sterling silver plate, and then it has an pearl next to it (you can get the birthstone instead). i have never taken it off since my son was born!! and when i have my next baby i plan on getting a plate with his/her name to add to it. here is the website
http://www.heartonyourwrist.com/
here is the one like i got (and my sons name is luke)

I would have killed for a massage when I was pregnant. To be fair now that I've had her I would still kill for a massage! I was sooo uncomfortable! There were a lot of things I wanted for myself that I didn't get because I knew pregnancy was temporary and my baby came first.
I really wanted new maternity jeans but didn't want to splurge
A pregnancy pillow!
Comfy shoes that weren't tennis shoes (I tried to buy these but couldn't find any)
...As for gifts I did get...
One of those necklaces from Hallmark that are glass and open so you can put charms in them. My step daughter got me one with everyone's birthstones in it (including my unborn daugher's).
My mom made me a home made mobile that she remade from the one I had as a baby (which she had made back in the 70's / 80's)
I decided to cloth diaper and was really excited about that so all of those accessories excited me when I got them.

Hi Bees!
Two of my close friend (my FI buddies wives) are both due in August!!! I must admit that I am a spoiler. Whenever my friends get engaged, buy a house, or have sort of life changing or exciting event I usually put together a care package or send a thoughtful gift and card.
Well, I am at the age where our friends are starting to have babies and this is a first. They both told my FI and I last week about their babies (at separate times).
FI and I got them each a 50 dollar giftcard to a maternity store to start, but I wanted some mom bees opinions on the BEST pregnancy gift they received or wish they had gotten.
Thanks!
