I see huge rings on the bee regularly, however in real life (not just seen in a store – but worn by someone you know), the biggest ring I have seen is 1 carat or so, and only 2 people I know even have 1 carat rings! The usual is 0.5ish around here.
What is the biggest ring you have seen in real life by someone you know? And what is the average size ring for your area?

@dontknowwhattodo: The biggest I personally know of is I think about 2.5ct (center diamond). Said person works in finance.
Around here (suburban Pittsburgh) it varies; in the affluent suburb next to us where I grew up 1ct-2ct center stones are common. In general though I’d say about .5-1ct seems the most common. My 1ct center seems large to me, but then I think it’s due to having short thin fingers makes it seem that way.
Isn’t .5ct the national average? I thought I read that somewhere.

I’ve seen a few 2 Caraters. I saw a woman at Whole Foods one day who had a ring so huge this guy stopped her with a “holy cow, how many carats is that thing?!”. She held up 5 fingers.
i live in LA, and I haven’t seen THAT many huge rings. I guess the average is around a carat, but it’s hard for me to judge because I’ve seen a pretty wide selection of styles used as erings (eternitiy bands, clusters, etc.).

the largest that I have seen IRL is my cousins.. It’s this gorgeous 2 ct pear diamond on a simple platinum band… I drool every time I see it…

@dontknowwhattodo: The biggest ring I have seen in person is probably my sister’s. I don’t know the exact specs of the diamond, but I do know that it is over 3 carats. Her husband makes quite a bit of money and she likes big sparkly things.
The average? Probably around a carat. Mine is under that, but that was my choice.

My mom’s friend has a 2 ct. that she got as an anniversary gift (although I think she picked it out and she’s the breadwinner, so…yeah). She’s 50ish though.

I wish I had a picture of it but it’s a 9.5 carat 3-stone oval ring TCW. It’s ENORMOUS. The GYN I work for is the lucky owner.
- 4.5 carat Oval center (her husband’s grandmother’s stone)
- two 2.5 side oval stones
The thing is insane. It looks like it belongs in a museum.

@dontknowwhattodo: I know a girl that has a moissanite ring that is about 2 carats, a lady that has a stunning 4 carat sapphire and I think I may have seen a few 1.50 or 1.25 diamonds.
In Italy there is not much of a tradition for engagement rings and even when people have one it is usually an eternity band or a small solitaire (about .25 or .30). I have a 3 stone diamond ring that I wear on right had and every one comments on it all the time and I think it’s about .60 or .70 tcw.
In the UK (where I grew up) rings are also traditionally smaller than the US, I think all my cousins/friends have simple settings with about .50 or .75 diamonds. Only my mother had a 2.50 carat oval sapphire with .50 diamonds on the sides so that’s another bigger ring I saw.

A lady who owns a local (successful) funeral home has a 5 carat canary. ERMAGERD it’s gorgeous.

@DaisyBelle: In the USthe national average is .38 but that varies a lot from state to state.

My aunt – 3.5 carat center. I’d say average is 1

Not many people I know are engaged. My family tend to have plain rings for engagements so mine is probably the biggest. 60 points, so not huge!

The biggest one I’ve ever seen on someone I know is my great-grandmother’s – I think it’s in the neighbourhood of 8 carats; it’s a diamond solitaire. It’s not very sparkly though, as the cut is antique. Unfortunately, it won’t be making its way to me one day as I have a huge family and I’m not significant to her. 😛
The average size of ring in my area is probably about 1 carat – anything between .5-1.5 carats is standard, I think with .5 being the low end and 1.5 being pretty darn impressive.

@walnutgirl: Oh man – really?
I wonder what Manhattan’s average is. Literally, out of everyone I know and work with, I have the smallest stone at 1.07 carats or something. Mine is considered very “dainty.”
Sorry – that probably comes off as major Snoot – I’m just surprised because everyone on the bee seems to have large stones as well

The largest single diamond I know is 1 carat.
The average for the people I know personally is 0.25 carat. 90% of my friends have round solitaires and plain bands.
Also, as a side note, I only know one person irl with a halo ering.
