Can someone please tell me what size I should enlarge one of our engagement picturse for the wedding as display? I want to know the dimensions for the mat itself, and what the size of the photo inside the mat should be as well??? I am expecting maybe 80 guests.
Thanks in advance!

The easiest thing to do would be to go to a frame store. Do you happen to have an Aaron Brothers near you? I ask because right now they’re having their 1 cent sale, buy one frame, get the second for 1 cent. Anyway, it’s easier to work backwards from the frame. Pick out a large frame, find a standard size mat that fits it, and have your photo printed to the size of the inside dimension of the mat. if you get your photo printed first, or just go buy a random mat, you may end up needing either a custom frame or custom mat, which is much pricier. Just off hand though, for 80 guests, I’d probably go with an 16×20 frame with a mat that has an 11×14 opening. Both of these are standard sizes, and you should be able to find them pretty cheap. Michaels has pretty affordable mats and frames, too… especially if you go with a coupon.

I would go with an 8×10 photo for a 16×20 frame. An 11×14 opening doesn’t leave very wide margins for people to write.

We used an 8×10 photo, and the as above, I’d guess that the frame is probably 16×20. We bought a standard one from Michaels for like $15.00 and called it a day.

Thanks for the fast helpful responses! I was thinking 16×20 with an 11×14 opening too! I think it’ll be plenty of space because most of our guests are all couples and family so from experience i know that one person will be signing for each couple…. I called Aaron brothers to get a quote for what i want and it was really high…like $250ish on average even with the 1 cent sale. I found some 60% off coupons for custom framing at Michael’s that starts tomorrow so I’ll probably stop by there! Thanks girls!

I know some craft stores have signature mats that are made especially for weddings (not sure if they are any different from other mats…maybe have more area for signatures?). You could check the wedding aisle at some place like Michael’s to see what sizes are available.

@dianeanthony: i bet aaron brothers gave you a quote for “custom framing.” they will totally try to talk you into that, i used to work there (many many many moons ago). you want to get what’s considered a “stock” frame, which are standard sizes. if you want a 16×20 frame, you’ll spend about $25, and a mat w/ an 11×14 opening will be about $15. if you buy 2 frames, or 2 mats, you’ll get the 1 cent price, so basically 50% off. 🙂

FYI Make sure you use an acid free pen!

We had a lot of guests and went with a 5×7 in a 16×24 frame. 11×14 doesn’t leave enough room for more than 10-20 people.
