As an HR professional and having spent the morning conducting interviews, I am just curious from the other side as to what is the worst interview you have been on. What did the hiring manager or hr professional do that made them stand out in your mind? Any horrible questions that you hate being asked?

    OH OH OH PICK ME

I went on an interview once where we kept hearing noises and talking down the hall from where the interview room was. The owner of the company got up from the interview, looked out the doorway and started SCREAMING down the hall that the noisemaker (her husband) needed to "SHUT THE HELL UP. WE'RE TRYING TO DO AN INTERVIEW."

I got a job offer from that company but didn't accept it because of that instance...even though the pay was nice.

In my first job, the owner of the company told me "there are probably more than a few people who really hate working here and have bad attitudes." UH, WHAT?

Those are the two that come to mind...

@roxy821: The worst interview I had was just on Thursday with our Council.  I was interviewed by a panel of three people (this was expected) and not one of them cracked a smile.  I swear if they asked me to stand up, blind folded me and then raised their rifles I would have been less surprised.  I felt like a huge inconvinience.  I was asked standard questions such as "What computer packages have you used and can you give examples of how you used them"  Examples...seriously.  I think being a little more friendly wouldn't have killed them and some more interaction from them when I answered their questions.  Every time I answered they stared at me (without blinking) for 5 seconds and then fired off the next question.

I ran for my life on the way out!!

I don't know why but I was once asked the question "tell me about a mistake that you made, since we all make mistakes everyday" - I don't know why, but I just didn't like the context of the question, because she alluded that she wanted a personal not professional mistake.

If I were her, I would of asked something to the tune of "tell me about a problem that you had to solve" or something similar, vs. saying "we make mistakes everyday, tell me about one of yours."

A company contacted me about an interview during a career fair at a conference that I was attending, so I responded that I would stop by to learn more.  It was for a smaller division within a very large company so their website wasn't relevant to finding out more.  Rather than telling me about their opportunities, they whisked me off to an interview...for a position I was not at all interested in.  Such a waste of time!

I haven't really had a bad interview, but I when I was managing at McDonald's we had a hiring day that I had to do interviews for.  Anyone who walked in got an interview on the spot.  I had one guy come in, sit down for an interview, and one of the first questions I asked was why he wanted to work there, he said he wanted the job because he was just fired from Burger King for not washing his hands after using the restroom during a health inspection.  Facepalm. Why, oh why would you volunteer that information at an interview?

The worst interview I ever had wasn't the recruiters fault at all. I had just graduated college and was going on interviews practically everyday. I woke up SOO sick one morning but went to the interview anyways, because it was a great opportunity. As soon as the interview started I felt like I was going to throw up and I had sweat literally pouring out of me. I was young and didn't know what to do, so I kept going. I made it through without passing out but I legit didn't remember a single thing from the interview. I got outside and called my mom because I was so sick that I was afraid to ride on the train to get home.

The weirdest part was that I actually got called back for a second interview! hah

@rubyroad10- OMG that's horrible, especially coming from the owner of the company!

@skyeatnight- I had a colleague who interviewed like that once, I hated it. I like to try to include some open dialogue to see the persons personality and also I am a nervous as they are half the time so it's nice to include a little personality.

@AnnieAAA- LOL, I could make a book of mistakes I make on a daily basis

I haven't had many interviews in my life (although I did just go through THREE to land my new job I start in a few weeks!)

The weirdest one was when I applied at Aeropostale when I was 19. So weird.  Granted I was only available to work like 10 hours a weeks. They asked me zero work related questions, just weird, random questions, such as "What is your favorite color?" and "What do you eat for breakfast?"

Not on the same scale but I once interviewed with a dentist who showed me into his private office, and realized there was nowhere for me to be seated. On the 2 chairs in his office were the employees scrubs and lab coats in a pile. He lifted them up and threw them on the floor! All I could think of was how dirty the rest of the office had to be if he could just dump everything on his dirty carpet. UGH.

I was offered the job, but obviously didn't take it.

The worst interview I went on included being asked for my CC info to pay for a license, being asked how much money I make and if I'm married with kids. They asked not to talk about the job to my family members because I'm too new and I would confuse them. Sketchy!! I very clearly did not give them my information and did not accept the offer.

Once I was told that they could't hire someone like me basically because I have goals and am in college and the position wouldn't be a life-long type deal when I graduated.

the worst interview I had ever been on was when I applied at a montessori school. I walked 5 mins early. NOT A SOUL in sight but I could hear people in the back playing\talking etc. As soon as you walk in , the door to enter the school is locked so you have to be let in. I literally stood there for 10 mins and no one ever came up to check, even when i opened and closed the door to set the alarm off lol. I had to call from my cell phone.....3 TIMES before anyone came to pick up the phone. I was already thinking "forget this" by the time someone showed up.

She was not friendly at all. Just "ummm can I help you" and I just replied that I was here for the interview, and that it was me that was constantly calling because I couldnt get in. She just rolled her eyes and was like "oh ok , well umm you can sit over here and ill go get her."

The girl (she was like 24- i was older than her and youll see why i call her that, lmao) finally shows up and just had me come into her office and immediately starts asking questions. No tell me about yourself, why you want to work here, nothing.

What position are you applying for?

Can you stay late if a kid isnt picked up on time?

    When did you graduate?

What were you doing before applying here?

    When can you start?

That was it!  she NEVER asked if i had a background in children, children education, if I had a clean record, clean physical , nothing.

but it gets better; in the middle of the 5 questions she asked me, a health inspector that does the daycares, and schools came in and the front desk girl interrupted out interview by walking in and saying "umm that bitch woman is back to do a health and safety inspection" They proceeded to cuss every other word and degrade that woman like she was the devil. They were like "I cant believe she freaking marked points off because there was no teacher watching the kids in the gym, etc (clearly stuff that would break rules)

anyway long story short, they offered me the job and I turned it down on the spot. I told them I didnt feel comfortable working in the enviorment they had established and she asked what I meant; so i told her cussing all the time and cussing around children, leaving them unattended and then bad mouthing everyone they worked with or doing a background check on the ppl they hired to work with the kids.  she just gasped and was like OH ok , well whatever!

    so i smiled and left!

I had a job offer basically retracted and was called into a second interview, with the first interviewer and someone else. They pretty much asked me the exact same questions I had been asked in the first interview, then neglected to tell me one way or another if I was going to get the job, after two interviews!

I have 2. One was when I was applying for a mentoring job at my college. They asked me "Name one thing you wish you could change about today", and what fell out of my mouth? "I wish I had worn different pants, I feel really fat today." Thank god they were both women in the room because we had a really good laugh about it, but I didn't have a better answer than that! LOL!

The other was when I was applying for an interior design internship at this firm run by a husband wife. They spent a lot of time bickering, but then when they got to my resume they started trying to poke holes in my timelines like for some reason I would be lying about what I had done. It was REALLY strange. They basically accused me of lying about various things (I don't know if they didn't believe my age or what the problem was). Then a week later they offered me a job. I graciously turned it down and told all my classmates to never apply there or return phone calls if they had.

When I was a sophomore in college, I interviewed for an intern position with a guy in his mid-40s, well-liked by other students who had interviewed for his company in the past. He gave me the skeevies. The whole time I was answering his questions he was staring at the gap between my shirt buttons where you could glimpse the teensiest amount of cleavage. And only then because the stretchy tank I had on underneath had pulled down a bit when I sat down.  It was so awkward.

I think the oddest interview I had was the job that I had now. I went to the interview in a nicedresses shirt dress pants and heals. The chef looked at me and said your hired be here at 10 tomrrow. No questions asked ... Not even a can you cook?

A few weeks later we had anOher girl come in for an interview and she wore a tank top at you could see her bra though boobs hanging out and holy jeans with a hot pink thOng.

The chef tlked with her for a few minS and sent her on her way.  He then looked at me and said those people are the reAson I hired you. You cared enough to dress up for a cooking position I figured that even if you could burn a salad I could teach you and you would care about the job

@roxy821: I had an interview once in the healthcare industry as an  Sr. Accounting Manager. I had a dear friend that worked for the company. She actually worked in HR as well. She informed me of their interview process and how elementary it was and that I basically had it in the bag. I came in for my interview and waited 45 minutes past my interview time. A lady finally came out and called my name. She led me to a large conference room with all of the top financial executives of the hospital. There must have been at least 12 people sitting in on the interview process. Those people were allowed to chime in at any point to ask me questions. I went from feeling extremely confident to super intimidated. Their questions were simple for me to answer until...they asked, "how long would it take you to make a contribution to our company?" I thought...really?! I thought it was an odd question to ask...especially one I've never been asked before during an interview.

I interviewed for a job retouching photos in photoshop. this was in the 90's, and I had only used my home computer before then, so I didn't need to use a server.

I had an interview question that involved their server. I was like "um, I don't know what a server is."

my not being able to answer that question was like saying I didn't know how to use a telephone.

OMG, looking back on it, I still feel really stupid.

    I had an embarassing one.

I had an accident a few years ago. I took medical leave. Then when it was time to get back to work, the state of that company was not doing too well so I decided to look around. In the interim I was at home on med. leave, I had put on weight.

Also since I was at home, I hadn't been wearing my 'professional' clothes all that much so I couldn't tell how much weight i had actually put on. On the day of the interivew I literally SQUEEZED myself into my pants and a nice button down shirt.

I was doing very well in the interview, I leaned back all giddy with excitement that I am doing so great. And the second I did that, the button on my shirt POPPED and hit the interviewer in the face! AND my bra was in FULL view. To make matters worse, this position was for a customer service job and they didn't have any rooms available for interviewing so the interviewer had just scraped together two chairs and a small desk on the work floor. I was on display for EVERYONE!

I did get hired. And I did take the job. But fortunately there was a month before the job actually materialized. And then another 3 weeks for training at another location. In the meantime, I changed my hair colour and cut it short, etc. So no one can recognize me. Fortunately, when I FINALLY started, a LOTTT of the customer service floor was cleared off because they had bought another building and moved people there. (To free up space for us new agents.)

    OH GOD....!!!

Probably the one for where I currently work. I had a great interview with the IT Director and I could tell he really liked me as a candidate. I felt super confident with my responses to questions and felt like I had it in the bag when he offered to give me a tour and take me back to meet their programmer/forensics guy.

When we got to the guy's office he was walking on a treadmill behind his desk and typing away on his computer. He barely even acknowledged us, even when the IT Director introduced me and asked if he had any questions about my resume. He was completely uninterested. I walked out of there with my confidence shattered feeling like the crazy treadmill man completely blew it for me.

I ended up getting the job- and the crazy treadmill man! He's now my FI! :)

I went for a job that would require you to 'present' to people. For the interview they asked for a presentation but on paper only. I prepared on the computer and had a paper copy so was prepared to deliver it either way, but they said to do using the paper one. I really didn't get it, as surely it would've been a better test. During the interview I felt more the professional.

When I was in college I interviewed at an advertising company in Chicago.  When I got there they had 2 people interview me who were no more than 23.  The guy was wearing ripped jeans and a heavy metal t-shirt, sat in the corner, and kept yawning.  Finally he just put his head down and took a nap on the desk while I finished the interview with the girl.  And this is a big time ad agency and they treated me like that.  I wanted to tell them to go f-themselves.

I interviewed for a company that sold verizon to businesses in the area. When I got to the office building they were the only company is the whole place. Their company sign was just their name typed and printed from Word. The whole waiting area looked like they had just moved in, so creepy. They said they would call in a couple days. They offered me a second interview before I even got home and I declined. My brother said it sounded like when girls think they are going to become a model and never return haha.

The first company I interviewed for out of college went well.  It was a bilingual advertising position and he asked me to do some translating for him, of course I did.

When I returned for my 2nd interview he had told me that he sent my translations to some colleague of his in california since he didnt understand spanish and then insulted my translation because it didnt fit the typical dialect of the locals on the other side of the country aka it wasnt "slang enough".

Leave it to a guy who doesn't know another language to accuse you of speaking your own language wrong.  Seriously..

I went on one last week... they took one look at my current salary and told me they were offering 10K below my current salary.  I was upset - why would you think someone with 7 years experience would take an entry level salary?  I left work 4 hours early for that interview.

Also, I hate it when an employer doesn't ask questions about your experience or ask for examples from your work experience.  It shows that they don't really know what they want and they're not a very good employer.

Another annoying thing is when they keep you waiting a half hour past your interview time, and you arrived 15 minutes early!  That's happened to me twice in the past month.

I went on an interview and thought I'd put my phone on silent but nope it rang LOUDLY right in the middle of me talking about professionalism. I turned 40 shades of red. I realized later I'd accidentally turned the volume up instead of down. Yeah.

I still got hired, oddly enough. I don't think I would have hired me!

I once had an interview scheduled for a staffing agency (as a staff member who would assist placing temp employees in jobs).  I talked to the manager on the phone, got directions on how to get to the building, and had a confirmation voicemail left stating the time and place for the interview (which I replied to, with an enthusiastic "yes! I'll be there!")  On the day the interview was scheduled, I got all dressed up and mentally prepared....then set off for my interview.  I drove to this really, really creepy looking building in a very run-down part of Indianapolis.  I located the staffing agency's name on a board in the lobby, and took the elevator to the appropriate floor.  I should probably mention that there was a used condom hanging out in the corner of the elevator.  EWW!!!!  I should probably also mention that it would have been better to turn around and leave at that point.

I went to the door labeled with the agency name, knocked, and waited.  It was dark in that office...I thought perhaps they left for lunch.  I sat down outside the door and waited half an hour, during which I checked and rechecked my notes and my voicemail about when & where my interview was supposed to be (and it WAS that time, that day!).  I called the manager's number (the phone inside the office rang).  I left a voicemail.  I waited another hour.  Nothing.  I finally called my mom and asked what I was supposed to do (I was pretty young at the time...still in college).  I gave up and left.  I left another voicemail stating that I had been there at the specified time, but was unable to reach anyone and "May I please set up another interview?"  I got a return call the next day, saying an interview could not be rescheduled since I had not bothered to show up for the first one!!  I was exactly where they told me to be, at exactly the time they told me to be there...and I know it was the right office due to the phone ringing right on the other side of the locked door everytime I called!!!  What a wasted day!!

Some of these are so funny, and some are so incredibly rude! It never ceases to amaze me what people get away with, especially in a "professional" setting...

My worst interview was for an executive assitant position at an ad agency in Toronto.  My friend and I both interviewed for the same job (weird, I know - our mutual friend recommended us both).  I arrived at the office and they brought me to the room where the VP sat.  My first interaction with her was that she looked me up and down in a very judgemental way (even though I was dressed appropriately for a professional job interview), before I had even opened my mouth.  I pretended not to notice, and tried to be as warm and friendly as possible.

We were chatting and it seemed to be going well enough until... she looks over my resume and drops this little gem on me: "Are you an overachiever?" I looked at her and kind of laughed, not knowing if that's a compliment or a put down.  I said, "I don't know...maybe?" and she says, "Well, we want achievers here, not overachievers."

I was blown away by that statement, because first of all, it literally didn't make sense (Don't employers want their employees to perform better or achieve more than expected?).  Second of all, she sounded so snooty and was just plain rude, that I was momentarily speechless.  My mind was officially boggled.  I could tell I obviously wasn't going to get the job.  She had a chip on her shoulder from the get-go.

My friend, however, did get the job, and oh my goodness, the stories she'd tell me. Just ONE example is the fact that this lady would physically throw stuff (like stacks of papers) at my friend when she was pissed off about something.  What a nightmare!  Sooo glad I didn't end up there!!

Oh boy. Do I have a doozy for you. I will warn you, it's kind of long, but necessary.

I once had an interview with this company. I can only describe this experience as "bizarre." This company was very secretive and secure. At the door, the lady takes my license and leaves me standing outside for about 5 minutes before she finally lets me in. I sit down and they have me wait for about half an hour.

In this block of time I oberve that 98% of the employees are about my age. Anywhere between 20-30 and not a day over. Only 2 men were over 40. It was really odd for a company. So finally we go into the conference room and start "interviewing." The guy goes on and on about how this place isn't like the company down the street and that my position has a really high turnover rate. I ask him how many people have been in it for the last 2 years and he says somewhere between 15-20. He kind of tells me more about this admin assistant position and says it can be really stressful. He tells me I could be doing anything from copying paper and other admin tasks to trying to find a route to get into some country illegally so relief volunteers can smuggle goats.

    Uh, what?

This took me a few minutes to process...by that time the CEO decided to pop in and become part of this discussion. Somehow they start talking about sales tactics and how you don't have to know anything about the product to sell it. That in order to operate and function, you have to have a "think outside the box" mentality. Anyone who wanted to work there must re-think and retrain themselves to the way they do things. Mr. Big CEO goes on to say "I've been selling this product for 40 yrs and I still don't know anything about it!" He's loud and obnoxious and starts flailing his arms about. I didn't even know who he was since the man didn't introduce himself. He starts asking me about what I think and I told him that it was going to be a challenge and he was like "Challenge? You don't know the meaning of the word. This place, this job would have to be another word. You have no concept of what challenge is." So I look at him sternly because he's starting to irritate me a little and I say "Then what would YOU call it?"

He mumbles something similar of an "I don't know," and proceeds to tell the other guy how he loves when he hires people so he himself can fire people. He proudly claimed himself to be a dictator and that he loves breaking the rules. Especially foreign laws. America's laws are "the only ones he doesn't break."

So by this time I'm sitting here for an hour. the CEO leaves the room and the other dude's just talking to me. he gives me this link to a forum, tells me to read it and think about it. and if i want a second interview, to call back.

I don't because these people are all whack jobs, and this place is run completely ass backwards.

I read the forum, and it was huge for me. There were people talking about having interviewed there and some had worked there. To sum it up, this place basically has a cult like environment and the advice was to run-run very far away.

I hear the people in this company reads the forum and laughs. They find it funny.

    Forum highlights:

"I find it reprehensible that they have to guise their company to lure potential candidates into their office. Other companies have people clamoring at their doors to try to get in. This company has people clamor to get out...."

"I worked at _company_ prior to and after the Spring Fair. The two weeks of "leadership and sales" training are incredible, but not in a good sense. Training took place everyday at the fair. The trainer loves to hear himself drone on and wants to get the buttons, one of four buzz words at _company_ <the other three are gawk - anything that is not to the company's liking slap - doing it there way and bomb'em - making other look, seem, or feel foolish. To succeed you need to be a mind numbed robot who follows the Narcissistic owner's philosophies to the letter. The basis of the teaching is that whatever is taught at the university or college school of business is wrong and backwards. Do the opposite, you will succeed. If you are not at work by 5 am six days a week you will never be a winner. There are only two kinds of people in the world winners, as defined by _unnamed_, the CEO/owner, and losers. 99.9% of people are losers. If you want NO work / life balance, want to die young and burn-out ... work at _company_. If you want to be a success in your personal life, work anywhere else. I was fired for not living the lies they teach, I may be financially poorer because of it, but I am not the walking zombie, I was for those 3 1/2 months."

I'm so glad I walked away.

I guess to answer your question, the weirdest thing I was asked was about how I felt about the smuggling goats illegally thing and finding "the road less traveled routes" into the countries.

Worst interview was when I was needing to change my weekend availability due to changes with my son and I went to another local lab... I had been working at one of the hospitals here for almost 2 years.

The women asked me why I was unavailable on the weekends & I told her that as a single parent some recent changes had occured & I no longer had available childcare & was trying to make a more stable lifestyle & week for my son. She knew I had been at the hospital & had been working early mornings/late nights & shift work.

She got pretty angry & rather than just saying that she needed someone who was available those days she asked how old my son was (along with a few other personal questions) and then proceeded to tell me that he didn't know the difference between days & and he would be just fine with me not there (going on in a mini rant for a few minutes)...

I simply smiled, told her that I appreciated her time & that I thought that there was somone else that would fit what she needed better, and then let myself out

lol... My mom was always a business owner & did hiring/firing and so I was pretty flabbergasted at how unprofessional the lady got. eek! lol

Weirdest interview I ever went to was for Chapters (basically like Borders Bookstore). It was individual interviews followed by a group interview. Because I was first on the schedule, I had to wait TWO HOURS to start the group portion. It sucked. On top of that, in the group section we had to bring and talk about our favourite book, pretend to help another interviewee who was a "customer", chat up an interviewee about how their day was, and then discuss, in front of everyone, our work abilities and what might impeed our abilities to work.

    It was just weird.

Worst interview was I was interviewed by a group of 8 people, wasn't expecting that! Plus I was sick & just took dayquil. They all took turns asking me questions, I didn't remember anyone's name & couldn't tell who was asking the questions.

My worst experience was I had an interview, got there & the front desk couldn't find her. They tried calling different departments, asked co-workers, no one knew where she was. I waited there about 30 minutes & then gave up. She never responded to any of my follow-up emails or phone calls. I still wonder whatever happened to her...

So for me, as long as you show up & there's not 8 of you, you're good in my book :).

About a year ago I was looking for a job, found one that seemed suitable and I called them up.  The woman was very nice, told me a little about the job and she set an interview up for me the next day.  It was a half an hour drive, but I went in the next day, I filled out their little form and when he was looking it over he noted that I said I didn't drive and the position required driving, and I pointed out that I was sent for an interview for their admin department, and he said they weren't hiring for admin.... but then totally switched gears and went super unprofessional and asked me about various places I lived.... I was so annoyed.  I was at least expecting the job to, you know, exist.

I also went on this interview a few months ago that probably could have pissed a lot of folk off....  Firstly, the information on the interview mentioned which bus would take you there, but didn't mention the hours of the job, and when everyone got there (it was a group interview) we found out it would be pretty much impossible without your own transportation.... It was freezing there, and the men interviewing us were very bubbly and relaxed, and had loads of food we could help ourselves to, and the first thing they asked me in my private interview was "do you think the universe is expanding?" then we had to end up calling a cab because we missed the bus and didn't want to wait an hour.  It was a very odd, but kind of fun interview.... I probably would have enjoyed working there but was also relieved to hear I didn't get the job.
