So here’s my problem:
My finance is a very creative type with a great eye for color and light and therefore is somewhat picky when it comes to photographers. I’m all on board for this becuase of course who doesn’t want gorgeous wedding pics!
We’ve found a few photographers in our budget (not easy since we’re doing it on a shoestring and in the Hudson valley where our families are, deep in the heart of NYCers charming wedding country highlighted on blogs from here to mars) but for some reason I cannot seem to get any of them to talk to me/work with us?
I swear I’m not a super crazy type A person. Our wedding is very small maybe 60 guests total and we’re not getting married until May 2014. I realize I may be planning early BUT in securing other vendors they’re booking 18-24 month’s out in the area and have had a few say they’re already booked for the day (Memorial Day weekend).
Scenario 1- I e-mail NYC photographer A via fill-in email contact on their website. No response, wait a month, no response, e-mail again, a week, later no response. Ask fiancé to try reach out, he uses fill in the blank e-mail contact, get an e-mail back in 24 hours saying she’s booked for the day AND asks the style he’s looking for/budget AND tells him names of OTHER photographers with that style/cost!! -Using the SAME info (date, number of guests etc)
Scenario 2- fiancé sets up a call with photographer B we talk with her for an hour +. She’s lovely and says she’s excited that our main interest is for her to be creative and that we’re pretty much just going to give her a list of people we want to be sure are photographed at our tiny wedding and that’s about it. She promises to send a breakdown of costs (to include travel from NYC to our wedding location etc.) within the week. No response, even when fiancé sends a quick friendly ‘thanks for talking with us, happy to work with you!’ reminder e-mail 2 weeks later. Fiancé votes to not use her due to lack of responsiveness. It’s 2 month’s later and I still haven’t heard anything…..
Scenario 3- I get an e-mail back from photographer C with rate sheet etc., so I try to call mid-day on a weekday, to show that I’m not some bridezilla as MAYBE I’m coming off in e-mail(??) It’s been 3 days since I left the message, no response.
There’s other examples but this is the pattern. What the heck is wrong with me?? Other vendors I’ve reached out to have called/e-mailed back in 24-48 hours or had an auto response that they only work every other Thursday or don’t put things on the calendar more than 6 months out or whatever.
WHAT am I doing wrong???

Perhaps it’s because we are coming into “wedding season”. I would maybe send a followup email saying that you are keen to tie the date down with them and leave a deposti asap. Usually mentioning cash does the trick. A lot of photographers are self employed so are crazy busy over the summer. I know our guy was tough to get a hold of over the summer months…

@rangersbride mentioning money is a good idea. I’ve been trying to reach out midweek to save myself the weekend wedding craziness..but cash probably gets a lot more attention!
@caroheart OBSESSIVELY! lol

We’re having a small wedding too, in the height of wedding season and I’ve been ignored by plenty of vendors. I actually see it as a way to weed out the ones I wouldn’t want to work with. Really, who wants a photographer that doesn’t get back to you for months? They’re good, but they’re no Ansel Adams. I would suggest calling midweek if you can, sometimes messages can be lost in the weekend craziness.

I don’t think I’ve been outright ignored by anyone, but sometimes it takes ages to get response to website forms. Caterers especially were really really bad about this, I don’t think they were regularly checking their inboxes.
That said, months is a bit much! I’d try giving them a call and if they ignore you, ignore them. You don’t need that lol.

@emmeff: try The Burks. They are a great couple, they are very responsive. They always answered me within hours not days, we also received our photos quickly (A teaser photo that day, a set of previews in a few days and all the photos within a few weeks). check out their work to see if its your style http://Www.meettheburks.com. They are based in NC but travel around the country.

Keep looking. Busy season is no excuse for this behavior.
Smaller budget- expand your search up to 4 hours away. Im upstate in Syracuse and service the HV/NYC/NNJ area. I am priced lower than NYC photographer because my cost of living is less up in Syracuse even though my prices are not cheap if you know what I mean. Many of us easily travel 5 hours from home. Try Albany since they are so close to HV. 🙂 Good luck!

@luvmesumhim: I agree. I really like their work and they will travel anywhere!
Plus they’re only a few hours away!

My favorites are the ones that you emailed months ago (like over 6-7) and then they email you back asking if you’re still interested and answer your questions.. then when I don’t reply back.. they email 2-3 times more asking if i got the email and if i wanted to see more of their portfolio or set up a meeting to chat.. like hello why would i hire you 6-7 months after the time I was looking when I on your priority list then.. lol
