Well, I support the local foodbank. My family and I always have. I think everyone deserves healthy and plentiful food. I used to volunteer at one, and in college I volunteered at an organic farm that donated everything we grew to the local foodbank.
I am a strong supporter of breast cancer research, my mom is a breast cancer survivor. when she was going through the treatment it shocked me to discover how many people are affected by this and how much of a difference early diagnosis makes.
The local animal shelters and humane society (just with extra food or litter when they ask for it). Just because I love love love animals. My FI always donated a dollar here or there for kids with cancer funds too.
I have always been a big supporter of animal rights and rescues. I have been a pet lover as long as I can remember, and DH and I have a rescue dog we adopted 3 years ago named Toby. Sounds cheesy, but I want to speak for them, since they can't speak for themselves.
I'm a big supporter of local animal shelters and rescues, notably the NYC ASPCA.
I support our local children's hospital. I've known quite a few people who had extended stays there when they were young (DH included), and kids from all over the country get taken there because of their specialized care capabilities.
Many cancers run in my family, but I most often donate to breast and prostate cancer.
I have a young cousin that is autistic, and my young FSIL has down syndrome, so I have a special place in my heart for children's causes.
Animal Rescue, pit bull rescue specifically. I adopted my dog when she was 9 months old, skinny as a rail, and shaking. The shelters in my hometown had pit bull "quotas" back then and would automatically put down any dogs they recieved over their quota even before giving a temperment test. I almost picked another dog over her because I into bought the pit bull fear hype, but when she met my other dogs, submitted to them, and promptly crawled up into my lap, I couldn't resist.
She's 8 now. Happy as can be, a little on the chubby side, loving as all get out, with lots of kid, dog, and human friends. She's also been a great big sister to the foster pit bulls I've taken in over the years.
The cause that I support is HIV/AIDS prevention. Growing up in an upper middle class household I had the misconception that HIV was one of those things that only affected IV drug users and prostitutes. But since two of my family members have dealt with it, it has turned my ignorance on its head.
I had one uncle who passed away 4 years ago from HIV-related complications. He lived with a positive diagnosis for 16 years, the last 11 of which were in a committed relationship with his partner, who remains HIV negative. My uncle was a scientist with a master's degree
My cousin's wife has been HIV+ for almost 20 years, which she contracted through heterosexual sex. She and my cousin have been married for more than 15 years, and he is also still HIV negative. She is an engineer with a master's degree.
Both of these people are the most amazing individuals who have lived with this devastating disease with grace. They have inspired my family to support them and others like them in spreading education and prevention. HIV/AIDS is preventable, but people have to take the steps to protect themselves. I view it as part of my life mission to quash ignorance and spread education. I thank God every day that my uncle's partner and my cousin were open minded enough to open their hearts to the possibility of love with an HIV+ partner.
Depression and HIV/AIDS
My life has been touched with people who have suffered from both and they are causes dear to my heart.
I volunteer as the coordinator of mentoring at a home for women who have been trafficked for sex. Human trafficking is my cause without a doubt.
I volunteer alot at the soup kitchens and donate tons to the animal society.
I also have a soft spot for Military Veteran causes.
My husband works at a day shelter for the homeless and low income. Its something he and I are both very passionate about (esspecially during the current economic times), so I also volunteer and donate regularly. This is definately my cause.
I work very hard for pro-choice and women's rights issues, specifically as they relate to fair pay, and leave work-life balance issues.
I support The National Epilepsy Awareness Foundation, Riley Children's Hospital, and research for pediatric epilepsy.
My son had a grand mal seizure unexpectedly a little over a year ago and through a couple months (and hours of travel) of testing we found he has a complex form of epilepsy that can be quite dangerous (even fatal).
We spent Thanksgiving week at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, IN last year because he was having a negative reaction to one of the medications he was on. They really helped us through one of the hardest parts of our lives.
My uncle also passed away from a complex form of seizure disorder which caused him to go into cardiac arrest at the age of 42.
November is National Epilepsy Awareness month.. I will be sporting my purple ribbon! :) I think a lot more people (including SCHOOLS) need to be educated on the dangers of epilepsy and how to help someone.

Mental illness, domestic/relationship abuse/violence, and women's reproductive rights are my top three. When I was in college, I wrote a bi-weekly column on the first two issues and it really helped raise awareness among people in my age group. I also received a lot of letters from people who suffer from various mental illnesses thanking me for putting the issue out there and saying that it was nice to finally see someone taking a stand.
It made me feel good about what I was doing...but also kind of sad. I started to think about how many people have to suffer because of the stigma and because no one will fight for them. There are organizations for these things, but I think the message becomes so much stronger when someone who's been there takes the time to speak out and put a face to the issues. I didn't mind being seen as the girl who'd been abused, or the girl who has PTSD. All I cared about (and still care about) is getting the word out and making people understand what it's all about. If people can't link personal experiences to the facts they already know, they won't care as much. And if they don't care, how can we possibly expect things to change?
Animal rights and Diabetes
We donate to ASPCA and Humane Society every year and my husband works for the American Diabetes Association (it also runs rampantly in my family)
My local SPCA which is NOT funded by the national ASPCA and Make A Wish Foundation.
Two things near and dear to my heart. My pup and children. Children who are born into this world sick is so sad to me. They are angels and never did anything wrong to deserve the pain they are faced with.
If I was independently wealthy those are the two organizations I would devote my time to.
My thing is testicular cancer! my little brother got it and it spread so fast to his lungs. it was terrible to see. and he was only 23. i dont feel like there is enough awareness about it to the young folks and that is who it mostly strikes! He's doing great and we can make jokes about prevention now. So ladies....dont neglect the balls! pay attention and make sure your guys are checking them too!
Great organization that works on literacy and gender equality in education in developing countries.
@Julesb81: Yes!! I am definitely a supporter of testicular cancer research. FIL is a survivor, and DH had a very serious scare 2 years ago, plus he is at elevated risk for developing it since his dad already had it.
I also am a big supporter of the American Red Cross, and donate blood frequently. Blood can't be manufactured synthetically, so the only source is through donations.
I do some volunteering in sex education, and I also mentor LGBTQ youth and tutor kids in my neighborhood. Try to make the world a better place ----> become very good at putting condoms on bananas and state capitals.*
*I have not yet put a condom on a state capital, but I dare to dream.
@Beluga: Rats, I was just going to ask if you've ever put a condom on a state capital...you beat me to it! ;) MAKE IT HAPPEN, GIRL! FOLLOW YOUR DREAM!
Health and Nutrition (yes on a budget). Obesity is an epidemic which causes health problems the world over.
If it were decreased we would have fewer expenses individually for doctors and prescriptions.
The US as a whole would pay less for insurance, people would be healthier and happer.
It would make a difference on our economy... and its all avoidable.
Most of the problem is denial. I teach nutrition and cooking for low income households. Its possible to be low-income and healthy and of healthy weight.
I also do nutrition and groceries for low-income critically ill people (HIV and breast cancer) to who healthy foods is the matter of life or death.
Make A Wish Foundation , Sign Language Rights for Deaf Children , Local Animal Shelter, LGBTQ rights and awareness are the foundations/causes that I work very closely with.
Right now I am helping on trying to prevent teen pregnacy I know it doesnt sound big but I was a teen mom and if I can help just 1 kid it will make it all worth it.
I also talk to teens who just found out they are pregnant do some counciling and just be a support system.
On top of that the food bank I donate and give my time when ever i can! plus donate to breast cancer reasearch and try to help spread the word on self exams :) (plus ill buy a item that supports breast cancer over one that doesnt every time)
Well here are mine, and why.
Animal Rights/Shelters/Rescues
See my cute shelter pups? They're why. They're why I'll never be able to do anything but adopt. I love them to death and think all animals deserve a chance. <3
Why? Here's why:
Spina Biffeda & Neurofibromatosis Awareness
My youngest sister was a special needs adoption. She has the abovementioned issues. Her life expectancy..is very short, to put it frankly and to keep myself from crying I must be frank.
Here's why:
Fertility Disorders & Awareness (PCOS, Endometriosis) & Adoption
Don't we look like we'll be great parents? ;) Just kidding but these two affect me and my ability to have children with my FI. We very well may adopt someday, and not as a last resort. (Also - my mom, dad, and sister above were adopted). And I work with DFCS and their Adoption Day fairs, etc.
Here's why:
Animal rights!!!!! many people tell me HUMANS need help but humans can help themsleves in so many ways that animals can not.
I support Habitat for Humanity. I believe passionately in the need for safe, decent affordable housing for all people both here and around the world. I work for Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Connecticut. Through my work I have seen such deplorable housing situations that entire families are living in, right here in my own back yard.
I have seen homes that the roof is leaking so bad that the family has to sleep in the living room to avoid the mold and rain. They rent but the landlord wont fix it. They can't save enough money to move and if they report they would be kicked out until the home would be fixed with no where to go.
I have seen houses that the entire family of 5 lives in a 1 bedroom because it is all that they can afford, or homes that are so rodent infested that the family can only eat canned goods. Not because they are dirty people but because there so many are holes in the exterior walls that they cannot keep the rodents out no matter what they do. And again these people rent before they come to Habitat.
I know the need for safe, decent, affordable housing and how having a stable place to live helps children to grown up to more "accomplished" adults, how a stable home helps to create a better home life with more couples staying married, how children who grow up in a stable home are more likely to finish college and start a career, how people who live in a stable home are more likely to progress in their career, how children who grow up in a stable home are more likely to own a home as an adult than those that grew up renting passing on these gifts to futher generations.
In addition to Housing, I support adoption programs and adoption assistance programs. My husband and I are looking to adopt. I just think it is a wonderful thing to do.
I've been donating to Planned Parenthood and various breast cancer awareness/research organizations for many years. I also have supported GMHC (in support of HIV/AIDs awareness & prevention, they do the Aids Walk NY) since I was in high school, first as a volunteer and now through monetary donations. And most recently Donate Life in support of organ donation.
I have also volunteered for 3 years as a mentor to two teenage girls through 2 different youth mentoring organizations. I love being a mentor!
I work with a breed rescue, a public radio station, and a local group that provides services for survivors of domestic violence.
Interestingly, I got involved over the summer with Church Street Bridal, which also provides services for survivors of domestic violence (along with many other programs).
Oh, if we are talking donations as opposed to time spent I am donating to Human Rights, as well as Breast Cancer Research and Make A Wish, Kiva, and random others.. Time donation is to Cooking Matters, Meals on Wheels and Project Open Hand, Domestic Violence Shelters.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!!! October is domestic violence awareness month too!! Breast cancer awareness always kind of overshadows it. It makes me sad. :(
I donate monthly to an organization called women for women. Basically I pay for a woman to get education and job training in war torn areas such as Bosnia, Iraq, DRC, etc. The program also helps with sustainability projects to help the women with employment. I also feel strongly about domestic violence and have worked to give free legal assistance to individuals in these situations.

Since October is Breast Cancer awareness month and the pink is everywhere, it got me thinking about the causes that people support. I think people tend to support causes that hit close to home for them- like they know someone who is affected by the disease/disability/whatever. While I can appreciate most causes, some just hit home more than others and some seem unrelatable (I don't know any children with Autism for example). Tell me some of your stories and causes and then I will share mine. I am intrested to know what you support and why!
