I’m not exactly the most athletic gal on the planet, but I want to wear a strapless gown and my arms are in major need of some work. I started going to the gym 5 days a week about 2 months ago and do about 5 arm machines every day. So far, I haven’t seen any change. Gah.
What do/did you do to get ready for your day?

I’d recommend increasing the weight and working out your arms every other time you go. Do every exercise to the exhaustion point – that is until you can’t perform even one more rep. You want to feel like you can barely lift your arms after your workout (in a good way of course). With heavier weights you’ll start seeing changes a lot faster! I also recommend using dumbbells or the cable machines, as you get a more complete workout with them than with the nautilus machines. My go-tos are shoulder presses and bicep curls with dumbbells and tricep extensions and seated row with the cable machine! And don’t underestimate the power of the push-up!! I like to throw in five or so during commercial breaks while watching TV. Easy way to tone up!

@Crazyhair: I was worried about the same issue! After I spoke with a trainer, and started reading a few health/fitness blogs, all of them pretty much said the same thing: Diet is most important, and spot training doesn’t really work (for instance focusing on the arm machines). I have been combining HIIT and circuit training with weights. BEST thing I have ever done. I do circuit training in classes like definitions, body pump or bootcamp type classes. I personally recommend classes because they teach you new things and push you pretty hard! But If you don’t have classes at your gym (i know they can be expensive!) there are TONS of circuit training workouts available online. Some of my favorites are from ToneItUp.com I love those girls! A lot of the exercises can be done with or without weights so you have the flexibility of doing them at home too. Just combine that on alternating days with some HIIT (High-intensity interval training) like sprinting then jogging or running/walking and maybe eating a cleaner diet and you will definitely see changes!
I agree with moni28k on the pushups! When I started I couldn’t do one real push up. Now I can do loads of them and my arms/back are definitely toning up. I have never really had definition before, but I’m definitely seeing it now and loving it. It does take a while though- definitely a few months before I saw changes- But you feel it right away! Good luck- you can do it!!

Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I do cardio too, but maybe I will check out doing a circuit routine. I used to do one years ago, and loved it. And commercial push ups! Weeee! I’ll try that as well.
Unfortunately I have crap for knees (boooo!) or I’d be throwing in the running as well.
