I hosted a couple of baby showers and there was one thing that went over really well and kept people's attentions while opening gifts. I would set a timer for 5 or 7 minutes (just gauged based on how many gifts there are), and whenever the timer went off, the person whose gift was being opened got a prize. I find gift opening time can get a bit boring, so it kept everyone happy and paying attention.
what is "Thank you note Raffle"? and I have only played steal the clothspin at baby showers (since you won't be saying the word baby alot) how is it different?
@bakerella: Great! I added that one to the list (I just made up a name for it, since I've never heard of the one before :).
i always have the most fun watching the bride trying to answer the questions about the groom. its usually very funny!
@kryje003: The Thank You Note Raffle is when you have all the guests write their address on an envelope at the beginning of the shower. Later on you draw one (or more) envelopes and those guests get a prize. After the shower, the bride uses the envelopes for her thank you cards, saving her a little time and energy in looking up the guests addresses.
I played Steal the Clothespin at a bridal shower this summer where you couldn't cross your arms or legs or your clothespin could be stolen. But I think you could also use it where a bridal word (like bride, groom, wedding, marriage, etc...) is the off limits word.
I said Bridal Bingo, How Well does bride know groom, bride trivia and give a guest a gift (which Ive seen before and thought it was so fun!)
Oh my mom did one for me that was fun but sort of embarassing. It would only work if your bride is a good sport ;) My mom emailed DH a list of questions about our first date, favourites, etc. Every time I got one wrong I had to put a piece of giant gum in my mouth. I'm not sure if that's the same as the "how well does the bride/groom know the other", but I liked the twist with the gum. It was pretty funny :)
The only bridal showers I went to were when I was very young and don't really remember much about them. The only game I remember playing was the bingo one. However, I love playing the "how well do you know bride/groom' type games.
@bakerella: I've totally seen and made a bride do the gum thing! It was hilarious. And we used bubbalicious for our bride, so it was EXTRA HUGE! It was really ridiculously funny!
We played a game at my best friends bridal shower that was fun--it may be too much prep work for a short game but I thought it was entertaining. :-)
You get a number of balloons (people can just think they're part of the decorations). In all the balloons, put pictures of famous hot guys (assuming it's not a same sex wedding), and one picture of the groom. So, at some point during the party, make the annoucement for everyone to grab a balloon and pop it. And whoever gets a picture of the groom wins.
It's sort of a quick game, but it's cute. :-) At my friend's shower, her MIL actually was the winner, and her reaction when she found his photo was really cute.
That one's good though, just to add something fun and quick to the party.
We played the gum game at my shower too, and it was so much fun. I was getting cocky, because I got about 5 in a row right. For everyone I got right, I got to open a gift. For everyone I got wrong, I had to chew the gum.
Gum tip #1 - Please pick the same flavor. Mine was a bag of assorted flavors, so I was chewing watermelon, pink lemonade, grape, etc. Yuck.
You have to play this one too! While opening gifts, one person records all of the things the bride says while opening presents. i.e. "I love it" "This is just what I wanted" "How cute!" And then read the list at the end saying this is what the bride will be saying on her wedding night. I got some plates and remember saying "It's so heavy" and some other things that really made me blush. Very funny!
@Mrs Green Grass: I can't believe I forgot that one! It was one of my favorites!
I'm personally not a fan of shower games. However, a shower I went to recently had a game that was actually pretty enjoyable. They had about 4 pages with pictures of celebrity brides (with their faces blanked out) and you had to guess who it was. I was surprised by how many I knew.
I'm not a fan of the games, but at my shower we played "the price is right" with household products and I got to keep all of them. It was really fun!
I really like the how well does the bride know the groom game! It's always a blast at the parties I've seen it played at!
My favorite bridal shower game is none! I know some people enjoy them but they're not my thing.
