I use my good old fashioned Better Homes and Gardens cookbook more than any of the million others that I have. The recipes in it have been used for generations of women and have yet to find anything in it that wasn't delicious. It also has all the tricks of the trade in it that have helped, like the different cuts of meat, measurement equals (how many tablespoons in a cup), and substitutions. If I were only able to keep one cookbook, it would be the one I would choose.

I like meal cookbooks. I think you only need one big all inclusive (unless you're hugely into cooking, which I'm not!). I don't need a ton of breakfast/soup/baking recipes, I need meal ideas.
@tksjewelry: Ditto on BH&G. I love collecting cookbooks, but this is the one I reach for more often than not.
Past this one, I usually can't go wrong with The Joy of Cooking, and Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything.
@Mrs Sarah McK: Joy of Cooking is a great one two, mine is hardback which is the only reason that I go with the BH & G more. If they made it in binder form, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Do you prefer the themed cookbooks like are found at the check out stand at the grocery store or do you prefer the big all-inclusive books?
