Just out of curiosity, what do you all do for a living? Do you enjoy it?
I work in a locally owned flower shop and I love it. Also, today I applied for a job at a new organic food store opening up down the street to fill up the few days each week I have off from the flower shop. :)
P.S. I added a poll because we all love polls. ;)
I am the Director of Annual Giving for a University Foundation. I don't love it. I don't hate it.
Twice a week I also teach Body Pump at Gold's Gym. I love it!
If I had my druthers I would be doing something with dogs.
i'm an IT manager. i sit in front of computers all day, working on websites, applications, and some graphic design. i manage a bunch of freelancers too. i do all this from the comfort of my own home, and usually in my pajamas :)
SAHM.
My degree is in English, and I was certified to teach grades 7-12, but I've never used it.
@CorgiTales: :(
I'm an operator (supervise computers, create trouble reports for any issues, and answer phones) for a university. It's part-time while I'm in school studying accounting (~25-30 hr/wk).
EDIT: I neither like nor dislike my job. I wouldn't want to do it forever, but it's simple and pays my bills (except tuition).
I am a Patient Account Liaison, working in a doctors office. Our speciality is Urology. It's a job. Previously, I was a Medical Secretary at a Pediatric practice- I love that job !!
I'm an office manager (& only employee 3/4 of the year) for an online dog supply store. I can bring my dog (& kittens) to work. I can't wait til next month when I get to have a co-worker :). I like it except it can become really lonely (being the only one here & no customers in person). I love the flexibility & that I bring pets to work :)
On the side I'm a photographer, sr pics, weddings, & pets are my favs :). I love this!
I'm an executive admin assistant at a large NGO. I love the people I work with, but my job could be a little more exciting!!
part 2 of this question: does anybody really love their job? there must be someone!
i like my job. working from home is a big perk, albeit lonely as hell. the pay is right, the hours couldn't be more flexible, my coworkers are like family to me, and i get paid a salary as a full-time employee for work that really only takes me 20-30 hours/week to complete. so i like it. i can't complain. but it's definitely not my life's passion. i have a master's in medieval art & religion....it would be nice to use that some day. i would also love to own my own business. i don't even care what said business would do. FI and i used to work together and we would love to do that again.
I'm an engineer by degree but my hired position is in Regulatory Affairs for a medical device company. We're basically the liason between the company and the FDA. I don't enjoy it (translation - I HATE my current job) and plan to switch jobs once the time period I contracted to is up.
I've gotton some exposure to the job I'd like to switch to once my contract is up (it's with the same company) and I think I'd honestly be able to say then that I love my job (assuming it all works out). The position is called a clinical specialist and they actually go into the OR for the implants of devices and help program the devices for the patients. Dream job! :) Now I just have to get it!
@LindsayB: ooh sorry i didn't see you had added the poll! (great minds think alike?)
I'm a probation officer. I specialize in the sex offender population.
I'm a public servant. It's boring. But there are plenty of opportunities for development and movement in the government, I just have to do my work well and bide my time.
I'm a lawyer. I love being a lawyer, the public defender part I love some days and hate others.
Im a nurse... it has its good days and bad... sometimes I HATE my unit... patients are physically and mentally heavy... and I hate that some days if its crazy enough I leave in horrible pain.. im 25... its going to be a long haul
Although I haven't completed my degree yet (Small Business Management in hopes of someday opening my own bookstore), this is a great job for me. I was really close to completing my Associates in Fine Arts a few years back before I realized that art is in the eye of the beholder and I wasn't going to succumb to "the popularity contest formally known as Art School". Ha. Seriously.
Anyway, to answer your question pb and j, I do love my job. I get to use my creativity in floral arrangements, interact with customers, and because I work in a very well known and high class establishment, it always keeps me on my toes. Plus! My best friend is in the process of taking over the family business (her father owns it currently), so not only do I get to see her every day, I am also learning the ins and outs of successfully running a business...something I am very grateful for seeing as how that is my ultimate goal.
I love my job! I teach High School English, all grades...from low kids to AP Language. I also teach Masters of Education classes at the University of San Diego. I used to coach soccer and field hockey but I retired ; ) this year.
Sure there are issues, like budget, pay, no respect...but I love that every day is different, I am largely in control of what I do and I get to interact with all kinds of people.
I debated a lot before getting into teaching, but I honestly think to myself all the time how much I love what I do.
I'm an aide at a nursing home. I do very general care, cooking, officework, etc. I appreciate the time it gives me with residents, and that it makes more than a retail job. I also appreciate that I can knock out hours with long shifts, so I don't have to work as many days per week.
That being said, if it was going to be my career I think I'd shoot myself.
Until recently I was a freelance theatre stage manager. I loved it at first, then I liked it, then I thought I'd close that chapter of my life because I really didn't want to hate it. Now I take photos and attempt to sell prints online and I'm looking to get some work front of house at one of the theatres in London.
@pb and j: Haha I think we must have posted at the same time! Thanks for adding the tid-bit asking everyone directly...I'm feeling far too lazy to have done it myself (hence the simple poll)! :P
Structural engineer, design bridges
I'm in HR and right now, I'm not liking my job too much. I love the career, but need to work for a new company. My pay is good and I like the flexibility that my boss gives me, but its not challanging and I'm bored most days. My dream is to do HR for a clothing company! I'm always looking for a new opportunity.
I'm a paralegal and studying to take an exam to be a certified paralegal so I can make some more moolah.
I'm just starting a new position as a social media coordinator for a university's medical school, so I don't know how I like it just yet!
But it's not a permanent position, I'm a masters student at the same university, and that full time occupation is one I do love!
Preschool teacher. I love what I do, I hate my job if that makes sense. I make no money, the hours are terrible, I never get days off, no paid vacations, holidays, sick days, terrible policies, the list goes on and on, but I love the little 3 year olds in my class :)
I'm a law librarian at a law school and I love it. Love working with the students - I get to teach the first year students legal research and it's the highlight of my week...well, besides imagining married life and being done with wedding planning!
I'm a magazine editor/designer. I do about two-thirds editorial and about a third design. I work for a small industry non-profit and I LOVE it.
Im a cultural athropolgist and i love it. i better since it took me a undergrad, a masters and almost done with my PhD.
I was a lawyer. Hated it. I now would like to get into ngo or nonprofit work. Or go back to school....again :)
writer for an ad agency. i love who i work with. the 'what i do' isn't even bad, however, i didn't go to school to be a writer to write advertising... but am lacking the motivation to start the always-elusive great american novel... that being said, i am ever-grateful to have a job doing what i do.
@ClairDarling: Um, is it bad that I immdeiately thought of Bones? Sorry.
As for me, I have a degree in English, currently work in marketing, and want to get my doctorate so I can be a college professor. My dream job: stay at home mom. Right now I hate my job. I have an office with no windows among other things. Boo!
i'm a health insurance claims analyst...it's boring! i sit at a computer and type all day. i don't hate it(yet!) but i don't think it's what i want to do for the rest of my life(but i have no idea what that is either)
I was a Marine Biologist for 9 years studying marine microbiology. Now i'm a microbiologist at a phama company helping to discover new antibiotics for drug resistant bacteria. If I had it my way, i'd be a photographer.
