I try to keep to an $80/ week budget which is really hard. I buy some organic food (meat, milk, eggs & some produce), and I also like to cook and eat healthy. Darling Husband thinks the amount is too high, but I think it’s pretty normal or even low for just the two of us.
So, if you don’t mind sharing…. I’m trying to see if our budget is reasonable or not!!!! We live on the east coast, By The Way in DE.
I’d love to hear responses from couples with kids, too… But for my own info purposes, I kept the poll to just 2-person families. Any suggestions to add to this poll?? Thanks ladies!

Yup, that sounds like us, although I voted in the $50-$70 range..but I feel like $70-$75 is average weekly grocery spending. We cook everyday and on the weekends (usually only Sunday) we make more elaborate meals that require buying a lot of ingredients that we do not already have. Also, we buy a lot of reduced fat/low fat items that are always more pricey.
I want to add that for work days, we bring food for home for breakfast & lunch.
Also! My budget is not including toiletries and cleaning supplies.. we hit up a Costco or BJ’s once every 4 months or so to load up on all those things. Then we end up spending around $400..but it is worth it!

It’s probably good to specify whether that figure includes eating out or not. We eat out more often than I’d like (less than Fiance wants) so if you exclude those costs because they are not “groceries” it can skew your figures. Or just have the poll asked at people who eat in say at least 5 of 7 nights.

We spend anywhere from $100 -$200 a week. (this includes animal foods, toiletries, wine etc) Not going out to eat though. Which we do at most once a week.
EDIT 2 people, no kids. Darling Husband eats a lot of meat which adds to the overall cost.

I have tow children and mine is 150 to 200 a week! you have to buy all sorts of school snacks

Definitely over 100, we spend a disturbing amount of money on food each week/month.

@kay01: Good point. We usually only eat out once a week, maybe 2x. So, I’m asking people that cook at home most often vs. eating out.
But I added to the poll anyway! 🙂

We spend about $100/week…typically shopping two weeks at a time. Doesn’t include booze or pet food. This is in NYC, so I think that’s pretty good.

Fiance and I sometimes grocery shop together even though we aren’t living together (haha, we’re weird). We usually go every 2 weeks or so and spend a little over $100.. so I voted $50-70. We eat out maybe once a week. I guess I didn’t include pet food but I think that’s only $20 once a month at most so it doesn’t change the amount too much.
We probably don’t eat super healthy though… he loves his ramen 😛 And I love my mac n cheese. What can I say, we’re college students.

@lefeymw: Ohh, we have a seperate $100 monthly budget for ‘Target’: toilet paper, paper towels, toiletries, cat litter, etc

Well I go shopping bi-weekly unless I desperately need something from the store. I usually spend 100 dollars for two weeks worth of groceries.

We only eat out once on Friday nights, and our grocery bill for 2 people is $130/week.
I work from home so I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner at home every day. Darling Husband brings lunch to work daily as well.

We also spend around $70-$90. We buy a lot of stuff in bulk from BJs and only cook once a week. We make one or two big meals that we alternate throughout the week. I also insist on buying organic milk and eggs, and we go to a local farm and buy in-season groceries or pick-your-own. Sometimes we’ll stock up on some meat or grocery item that is on sale at the grocery store (sales at the grocery store are cheaper than wholesale prices) and just keep it in the freezer. Just get creative and you can make it! We also eat very healthy and it works out, even though sometimes it’s hard. We’ll eat out once every two weeks or so, maybe less.
Oh, and we live in PA and often go to DE on business or to his parents and buy stuff from there – no sales tax!

@MCC919: on a weekly basis I would say we probably spend $130ish on food alone.
