So I went in last night to get a bustle put on my dress. We went with a french style.

Today I am wondering if I made the right decision. The over-bustle is a little more laid back I guess, where as the French is more couture. However, my reception is outdoors and I have mason jars as centerpieces and I am just worried that a French bustle will be a little too stuffy for my style. I am now wondering why I didn't go with the over-bustle. Part of me thinks I will want my dress to be more flowy in the back when it is bustled, rather than bunched under on the bottom.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

My dress is form fitting and all lace. Similar to the one in the picture.

I need to call my seamstress asap if I need to change it! Ahh!

Can you post pics of what the bustles look like on your dress or on a similar dress? I'm not too familiar with them...

Here are two examples... The first one is the French and the second one is the over bustle (I think that's what they are called anyhow. Possibly an English bustle?)

    Thanks for your help everyone!

To clarify: The top pic with the girl looking in the mirror is the French.

Bottom pic with girl dancing with her dad (actually my FFIL and FSIL haha) is the over bustle.

I personally like the look of the French bustle better, and I don't think it looks too stuffy or more formal or anything. It looks neater to me. But if you like the look of the over bustle better, then you should go for that one. I don't think either one is more/less appropriate for your setting.

Id stick with the French.  The overbustle on the photo of the lace dress looks a bit dumpy.  and truthfully - I say this as someone who jsut got married-guests do NOT know that a French is more formal and couture than an English bustle.  We know this because its in our faces all day, but in the end, 99% of the guests dont even know the difference.  Plus, your dress is very elegant - formality aside, I think the french looks more elgant and in tune with the dress.

Stick to the french. Bustles are flimsy enough, but the over is the flimsiest. Being out in a field you want the strongest one :-)

I personally prefer the look of the French, and considering that you already have it set up for that, I wouldn't stress about it!

Go with your first instinct!  I think the French bustle looks lovely, and it'll still go with your venue.  And your dress, WOW!

It looks like your dress has a lace layer and a satin layer underneath that.  My dress was the same way.  My bustle was quite different than most.  My seamstress made it so that the lace and satin layers could be separated.  The satin layer picked up like an over bustle in one spot.  Then the lace layer was bustled over that in 3 pickups.  Sounds confusing but it looked really good.  I didn't quite like just a plain pickup bustle and the french never looked quite right to me either with my dress.  But the way my seamstress did the bustle was perfect.  It was a happy medium between a single over bustle and the french bustle.  I can try to find pics if you need them.

I love the second one... but it may just be because I've never seen a dress bustled like that before.

For you, with that dress, I'd say french definitely. The over-bustle to me does not look very good and it does not look like the English bustle either. Truthfully it really just depends on the dress. Like another poster said, people don't know the difference and whether one is more couture and formal then the other. BTW, I tried the french on my dress and it looked like an extra but coming out of my legs because my dress is very full. On yours it looks great!
