I think this is 100% personal preference. When I tried on gowns I told the sales lady that I wanted to wear almost nothing underneath, just a pair of nude colored lace thong panties, so I bought a dress that would allow me to do that. Wear what will make you feel sexy and comfortable!
Spanx. Definately Spanx. I got the Higher Power ones. Anything that makes it easier to pee while someone is holding your dress over your head is what it's all about. Plus no panty lines (if you have a slinky dress) and really comfy (even if you have a foofy dress).
If you're going for anything tight to hold it all in...keep in mind it will also make you hot, so if your wedding is in the middle of July, you might want to go with a dress with which you do not need to wear Spanx.
also keep in mind who will be in the room when you're changing - don't wear anything you wouldn't feel comfortable showing them. ;) other than that, do what is comfortable for you. if you want to do something more special/less comfortable, you can always change later.
I was debating this with my sister/MOH last weekend. I wanted to wear something sexy under my pretty big dress but if I go with a thong, my crinoline/petticoat pokes me in the rear. And I can't deal with THAT all day. So I'm on a mission to find something comfortable instead. Because, as my sister pointed out, there is no way that my new husband is going to be able to get me out of my dress (snaps, buttons, corset back), so she's going to come up and help me get out of my dress, and then I'll slip into something a little ... less. :) I'll probably go with hip huggers or something of the sort.
Go for comfort over looks, definitely. Nothing that'll give you a wedgie. ;) I know people love the idea of wearing sexy lingerie, but you can change into that later when there aren't fifty layers of lace/tulle/satin covering the underwear (and keeping you from fixing anything that chafes). I went for nude seamless bikini briefs. No panty lines, and soft comfy cotton all the way.
It's totally up to you, but I agree that you should wear something comfortable for the wedding and change into something better looking after the reception. I needed some structure so I was thinking about getting the Spanx Higher Power panty, but I didn't like the seam going up the front so I went with this: http://tinyurl.com/5rmlf8 and wore a thong under it all.
Ok, maybe this is an awful question, but with the spanx that are shorts like and go up the the bra line, how do you go to the bathroom when wearing a wedding dress? I realize that they have that hole in the bottom but that does not seem easy considering you'll also have yards of fabric around you and well I'm not sure I want my hands that close while I'm going...
Should I just invest in the slip style and not worry about it?
I would prefer wearing seamless boyshorts. Thongs can be pretty uncomfortable for me. But of course, that's me. :)
I went and bought all these pretty, lacy panties and then ended up wearing a cute white, organic cotton pair I found at H&M!! There will likely be people seeing you get dressed, so wear something you are comfortable changing into in front of them! Only wear spanx if your dress demands it - otherwise, it is a long day to spend in something so constricting!
I originally had the Spanx shorts thing that went up to my bra (with a hole in it to go to the bathroom...ugh!)...that just wasn't going to work for me so I exchanged it for a Spanx 1/2 slip......much better! I will wear some nice, smooth nude panties under the slip.

Sorry, there are no users yet.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what kind of under should one wear under the dress? Obviously granny panties are not a choice, but is it okay to wear hip hugger briefs, or should lace be worn? TIA!
