i know you said you had a wood ring, but how about a metal ring with wood inlay?
Hmmmm...first thing that comes to mind is brushed metal, but it's still metal. I've also heard of ceramic rings and black plated Tungsten, which would look like this:

I know Titanium is a metal but it's kinda unique. It can be brushed so it is not shiny AT ALL. It's actually quite dull like that. In fact, they have black titanium. I think it looks pretty spiffy.
that article mentioned corian wedding bands! that might be an option!!
Check out Zoe & Doyle on Etsy. We just got FI's ring into today. It has a matte grey finish!

They don't have any on their right now, but click their "sold items"!!
What about a jade ring or some other ring made out of stone?
Get him a titanium ring. My Fi and I just looked into them and we didn't like the fact that they werent very shiny, so this would be great for your FI. On another good note they are virtually indestructable......good luck!
The only thing I would be hesitant about with tungsten and titanium is that they aren't resizable and are difficult to remove in an emergency...personally, that would kinda scares me, especially if he's working with his hands.
If you want something that isn't going to break, a metal will probably be your best option though. Platinum is one of the most durable and it has a nice heft to it which I think gives a masculine feel to it. Besides matte and brushed finishes, there are also hammered finishes and what's called a stone finish, which is a more rugged looking matte finish. Here are some pics for inspiration!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll see if I can convince him out of the tattoo with them.
We got my husband a tungsten band - it has a brushed finish and isn't "shiny" but it still looks presentable with a suit. Let me see if I can find a pic!
I love that wood ring and the black ring!!!!
We are getting FI a tungsten ring with a carbon fiber inlay! It is still partly metal but the metal that is showing is brushed!

My husband first tried a wooden ring. It broke. So now he wants a tattoo but I just don't like the look of wedding ring tattoos. He doesn't like metal or any kind of shine on his finger.
Are there other options?
