We bought the Dysons Ball. I agree that it's ridiculously expensive, but it's worth it. We bought it especially for our hardwood floors and it's great. Also, we got some christmas wiring stuck in it and they replaced it for free; I'm pretty sure it has a lifetime warranty. We justified the price by considering how many vacuums we've had to replace over the years. If this one lasts 10+ it was worth the investment.
Sorry that's not exactly the advice you're looking for! :)
Right now we have the Dyson DC-14 - we registered for it and were lucky enough that someone bought it for us...it was close to $400 but worth it
Before we had the Dyson we had a Bissell Pet Hair Vacuum that I think was around $150-175 and it worked really well. However it just could not handle the amount of hair that was coming off of our 3 pets!
Its also true that we have gone through several vacuums but the Dyson has a lifetime warranty and is just made better so you aren't going to ever have to replace it. I would love to have the Dyson pet hair or Dyson ball but even our basic Dyson works wonders!
@Nov11VABride: That's ok! The dyson ball definitely seems like it's the best, I just don't want to spend that much :)
@PitBulLover: We don't have any pets, so I don't think the amount of hair would be a problem (it's mainly my hair around the apartment, lol). I mainly need it because our carpet gets so fuzzy, and we get dust bunnies all around the apt. I'll check out the bissell, thanks!
yeah our dyson ball rocks but the price tag was less than stellar. we killed our old vacuums (2 of them!) with all the cat hair and the dyson puts up a fight and wins every time. But since you don't have pets, I imagine you could just go to Target, buy just about anything, and be fine. My cheapo vacuums were FINE before we had pets.
@hilsy85: Bissell is a good name brand overall so I would definitely look for something from them. Go to Target and just compare vacuums side by side - thats how we always did it!
@ejs4y8: @PitBulLover: No target by us :( I was going to order from Amazon, so right now I'm trying to compare reviews. This one looks pretty good:
And under $100. Although it also looks bulky, which might be hard for storage.
Dyson ball baby!!! You don't need to have pets to want a good thorough cleaning of your carpets. It really sucks the dirt out well.
@Sasha2011:I wish we could! However, there's no way DH will agree to spend $500 on a vacuum, even if it is the best one out there :) I'm looking for something less expensive.
We've got a Henry vacuum cleaner! We're really pleased with ours. They're not very expensive, and they have a little smiley face too! http://www.numatic.co.uk/products3.aspx?r=4&sr=1
A friend had a dyson, and he said it was the worst $400 they ever spent. We go through vacuums every 6 months so I was definitely doing my research when buying our latest, which I LOVE and which was under $100
This thing vacuums like nothing I've ever seen, the bags last for months before you need to refill. The suction is great, it is LOUD but with good reason because it does the job. Comes with a bunch of attachments, and because its so popular, the replacement bags are so easy to find. I don't know how many times we had to go buy a new vacuum just because they didn't sell the replacement filters anymore.
@amysunshine: That is so adorable :)
@arenyth: Do you find that emptying the bags and changing them is a pain? Do you have to change them after every time you vacuum?
I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel and LOVE it! Even better, it was on sale at Target several weeks ago for only $99. We had considered getting a dyson, but the one person I know that has one says it's a pain in the butt w/ new homes (due to new electrical systems on new homes). He said whenever he turns on his dyson, it flips a breaker elsewhere in the house. Another co-worker highly recommended the Hoover, so we went with that and couldn't be happier.
@hilsy85: No not at all, the front just snaps off and the bag comes right out and doesn't even make a mess. I vacuum every day and I change bags maybe every 4 months. And we have a cat and a chinchilla so they can make quite a mess.
we have a roomba and a hand held dyson and couldn't be happier. i know you don't want to spend a lot, but for us, it was much better than spending $200 on something that doesn't work well and falls apart.
I've got to agree on the Dyson. We just got a new one (the pet hair one), and it's honestly amazing. My SO loves it so much that he's starting vaccuuming on a daily basis- that alone was worth the cost!
We got a Dyson canister a few months ago and we love it! It was expensive (approx. $850) but it works really well, especially since we have a husky who leaves a trail of fur behind in every corner of the house. Our house has never been cleaner!
Sorry - another Dyson fan here. We bought the Animal (the purple ball one) with wedding money and we LOVE it. It's so easy to use (really maneuvers well) and has great vacuum power. We got ours at BBB and cashed in on the 20% discount.
Prior to that I had an Electrolux wireless stick vacuum - it worked well for the first couple months and then proceeded to fail miserablly.
Another reputable brand is Miele - but those can get pricey as well.
We have the Hoover Lightweight- http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Platinum-Lightweight-Canister-UH30010COM/dp/B001PB8EEM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295463432&sr=8-1. It reminds me a lot of the Oreck that my parents have. We live in an apartment (with no pets) so I can't testify to how it is for big jobs but it works great for us.
It's $218.95 on Amazon. They sell it at BBB for $249.99 too (about the same as Amazon if you use a 20% off coupon).
Thanks ladies! I see Dyson is a big winner...unfortunately, it's just not going to happen. There's no way i'm spending that much on a vacuum--would way rather use that money on dinners out or new shoes :)
@lampshade127: That one looks nice too...how is it on wood floors?
I was really close to buying a Dyson (I also wanted an upright) but when I saw how big and heavy they are I decided not to. We ended up with an Oreck and while they don't look very modern, they are super lightweight and I think start in the $150/$200 range. We bought a model that came with a free canister and both vacuums work like a dream. While DH were in the Oreck store buying our vacuum there were about 15 housewives that came in and raved about the Orecks they've had for 5+ years with no problems.
Bissell pet hair eraser. We have a dog (black lab) that sheds like crazy on our beige carpet. My mom also has it (she has 2 dogs, one that doesn't shed, and the other a pug-- and he sheds a lot) and she loves it too. You mentioned you don't have pets, but just think-- if it's that great in a home with shedding pets, just imagine how it would do somewhere without pets. :)
i'm going to be the odd one out and say, i HATE the dyson! though it wasn't the ball one which everyone seems to like, it was the purple animal one. it was fine for going over the floors, but using any of the attachments was a pain in the butt! my mom doesn't like hers either. i bought a hoover widepath (it was the consumer reports best buy at the time, not sure if it still is) http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Widepath-Upright-Vacuum-U5140-900/dp/B0009ONZ8G/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1295483409&sr=1-1
my issues with it, the cord is not very long, and the hose for using attachments it short, BUT it's light, cheap ($78!!), and cleaned the carpets just as well as, if not better than, the dyson. we have a cat, so we clean up a lot of fur!
we bought this Bissell Powerforce from Walmart. I'm pretty sure it was $40 in-store. We have a dog and have never had problems with it getting up dog hair. It works great! It's bagless and easy to clean.

We got the Hoover UH30300. It's basic and powerful and not too expensive! I really like it. I had registered for the Dyson Ball, but when no one got it for us (ha! $500 vacuum please!) we went cheaper and it's really all we need.
we LOVE our dyson ball for all floors! it is AMAZING! i cannot believe what a great vacuum it is! ;) I will never buy another vacuum again. We got it at Sears but i would wait around and watch for sales because they are pricey! but honeslty you will save money in the long run
I love how everyone keeps saying Dyson when you clearly state you want to spend under $200. My vacuum finally died today and I'm looking to replace it before the weekend is over. I might go for a Bissell for right now and then get a Dyson next year when we move.
@moderndaisy: My mother has an Oreck and she swears by it.
We recently bought the Electrolux Ergorapido. Its a stick vacuum that comes with a built in dust buster. Its small and runs on battery so it needs to be charged but it works perfectly for our 2 bed/2 bath condo. We didn't want to spend alot since we're hoping to get the Dyson ball for our wedding. This was only $99 and we definitely feel we got our monies worth. Even after we get the Dyson, we'll still use this for small jobs. It's cordless and weighs like 5 pounds so its very handy.

The Shark vaccuum is the bomb. As good as the dyson and wayyy cheper!

DH and I need to buy a new vacuum--all we have is a little Dirt Devil hand held one, which has been adequate for the last 4 years, but is starting to finally fall apart. I'd like to get an upright one so I don't have to bend over to vacuum.
I'd love something that works on wood floors as well as carpet, but that would be a bonus, not a necessity. I don't really have a preference for bagged vs. bagless, althought it seems like bagless would be easier?
I'd also like to stay under $200, if possible. I can't believe how expensive some vacuums are--over $500 for some of the dysons?!
Any suggestions? Thanks ladies!
