Haha nothing, its a struggle each and every time I go. I'm so pathetic :( BUT, the thought of looking extra hot walking down that aisle is motivation!
The best motivation for me was having a trainer. We had set appointments so I had to be there to meet him, plus he was just fun to spend time with so it was like having a friend outing and the working out was just extra!
Absolutely nothing! The best I ever did was 21 weeks on Buff Brides (the book)--I couldn't make it to week 24. ;) I usually crap out by week 6. What helps is that no matter how much I don't want to work out, I still eat well (so it doesn't get too out of control) and I start over with renewed vigor after a few weeks off.
I'm with marigold. I try to eat well so even if I don't run for a week or ... 5 ... I don't want to beat myself up over it too badly. The best I ever did was 6 months with a trainer (but so not worth the money. i got ripped off in the end...wouldn't cancel my contract...so be CAREFUL!) I just think about how much better I will feel after. I've been a size 10-12 forever and 163 pounds. I'm happy the way I am! But working out does give you endorphines (spelling?) and generally gives you more energy/less mood swings. ;)
For me it's the numbers. Every day I get on the scale and the number is lower than the day before it just makes me want to keep going that much more.
For me i do really good.... then i start my period and decide to skip that week. Then i lose all progress. Im trying to stop that habit now! I don't really have any motivation except i HAVE to go. Trying to think all wedding dress to stay focused at the gym :p and a good playlist.
I really like working out. I find that it helps me de-stress, feel strong (like, have you seen those gatorade commercials with athetes recently with the strong beat in the background? that is def. motivating) and I know that I can eat what I want (within reason) and not gain weight. Plus, I variety my routine alot so I never really get bored. As soon as I am bored, I don't want to work out. holding myself accountable is a big deal- every week I look at my schedule to find when I ahve time time M-F to work out. I usually take the weekend off traditional work-outs, but try to stay active (go for walks around the city, dance, etc).
i have to have a goal. always. even if it is the most superficial thing you could ever imagine [once, my roommates and i had an oktoberfest themed party in november called novembeerfest {yes, novembeer} and we bought these sexy dirndls to wear at the party and my goal was to look good in it, so i worked out for that, or our recent trip to mexico when i set a goal of looking hot in my bikini]. i have to work towards something where if i skip working out i will really regret it. i don't do numbers or anything like that, i don't think about how much weight i have lost or how many inches i may have lost... i just look for a general feeling of looking in the mirror and thinking 'damn i look pretty good'. once i am at the gym i love it and i really enjoy working out, it makes me feel great, but the problem is finding a reason to go. so i have to have my goals.
also, i try to hit the gym at least twice a week [usually three], so that my progress doesn't stop but i don't feel like i'm taking up all my free time at the gym. when i'm in a routine, it's easy to go without feeling like im missing out on something else or worrying about what else needs to be done and i can focus my energy.
It helps me to train towards a goal, whether it's a 5k, 8k, 15k, etc etc. You just find a training plan and follow it - the adrenaline you feel on race day is amazing and the sense of accomplishment can't be beat! I have also found that accepting that motivation is kind of an unhelpful thing to rely on. We all keep going to our jobs and brushing our teeth whether we're motivated or not! Training plans and "just doing it" always helps me stay on track.
It's hardest to actually start...like, if I am gonna do some treadmill, I have to make a playlist on my iPod to get me excited about it or something =)
I totally agree with Snapdragon - I don't rely on motivation to keep me in the gym and on track. Instead, I don't treat working out as something extra, I always treat it just like I treat work, i.e., I work to support myself, and I workout to take care of the only body I am going to get! It is non-negotiable, and I just do it!
Now, that's not to say that I don't ever take days off or a week or two off; part of taking care of yourself is knowing when you need to cycle up or down . . . just like at work when you know you can leave at 6 or when you need to stay much later.
The pay-off for me is body confidence. And catching my BF staring at my nekkid booty as I walk away from the bed . . . :)
My goal is to look good in the pictures. Silly, I know. I eat pretty healthy already though but want to be able to go to that dress store, order my dress, and hopefully be only a size or two larger than when the last time I bought one (back in 1996).
Ugh - I have a hard time with this one! My thing is, I'll get really motivated to do it, and I'll be great about it for a month or so. Then, I start to feel like maybe it isn't doing much for me 'cause I don't see my body changing or anything (I'm pretty small, so the changes when I work out are very subtle. It's mainly to maintain my weight, not lose any) I'll take one day off, and that one day turns into like...3 weeks.
However, I'll eventually get to a point where I look in the mirror and realize that working out WAS doing something. So I have to just force myself to start the cycle over, haha.
as with bellenga, my goal is to look awesome on the day and in the photos.
i'm slowly cutting out things like McDonalds and Starbucks and soft drinks and sweets and crisps and so on... man i got a lot to cut out!
Having my dress hanging in the closet!!! The workouts start today. I already am happy with my weight. Just need to tone up and get buff!
Fear of looking bad in the wedding pictures is my motivation!
Well, sort of, I find I'm more motivated when I'm seeing results. When I'm at a plateau and not seeing any differences, it's really hard to keep going..
The half marathon I'm running in January! I don't want to be unable to finish ;o)
I don't care as much about looking good for the wedding day as I do for looking good for the honeymoon! I try to think about the honeymoon to keep myself on track.
I'm probably the lazinest person alive. If sitting on the couh made you lose weight, I'd have to get off because I'd start to waste away!
But I do try to get myself to the gym at least twice a week, with a goal of three to four times a week. I'm awful with excuses. I think one day, my excuse was, "Well, I stayed an extra 10 minutes at work, so I should just go straight home since it's so late."
My main motivation is usually how good I feel after, and how much healthier I feel overall. After our wedding in September, I let myself go for about a month. I ate a lot of crappy foods and I didn't go to the gym at all. And I felt sluggish and weird, and sometimes I just felt sick. It was bad, but I'm kind of glad it happened in a way because it reminded me how bad I feel when I skip the gym. I started going back to the gym a week ago, and I already feel so much better. I still never want to go, but usually I make myself just get there (which is half the battle for me), and once I'm there, my motivation increases a lot.
Also, it doesn't hurt that I like how I look when I lose a few pounds, either :) It makes me happy when I try on a slim fitting dress and I look good in it. It's superficial, but hey, who doesn't want to look slammin'?
Hotchild has a great point! I am the MOST motivated when I'm training for something.
If I'm just working out in general though, seeing certain body parts I really like on people in magazines or on TV or even in the gym motivates me. But I know for some people this has the OPPOSITE effect, so I don't know.
Putting it on my calendar - like an appointment. It helps that I don't have anything else I'm supposed to do during that time frame - except the self induced torture. :)
I've tried almost all of this...i marked it on my calendar, added it to my to do list, but I'm just not motivated. I'm always too tired to do it...or no one wants to walk with me. I have my dress...and you'd think it'd be enough to get me in the mood to work out, but it doesn't. i don't have the money for a personal trainer or a gym membership...so i'm stuck doing it myself. I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me, it's RESULTS that keep me motivated. I've always been petite, but in the past few months I've seen dramatic changes in my body and I'm told at least once a week that:
1) I'm getting ripped (@ 105 lbs) :)
2) I'm getting smaller
3) I'm getting stronger
While it's nice to have others notice the changes, I see them too, and that motivates me to keep going to the gym 5-6 times a week. I also work out in a group setting which helps me push harder.

I always find I'm just not motivated enough to stick with a work out plan. I'll do it for a week or two, then get lazy and either forget or just give up. So ladies, what keeps you motivated to keep going?
