Guess what shape mine is. ![]()
I suppose this will only apply if you picked it out yourself, but I'm wondering how you chose your diamond shape.
Me: I wanted something a little different from 'the norm' (round). I was sure I'd end up with a cushion, princess, emerald, or oval. I soon ruled out princess because it was too square for me - I liked the rounded nature of the cushion. I probably would have gotten a cushion cut if not for one jeweler showing me a pear...
I am not quite a 'pear girl' (as Ms. Champagne self-describes), but it got me thinking about other shapes, and I ended up going online (as if I hadn't already spend hundreds of hours ring-ogling) and finding some gorgeous marquise settings.
I chose the marquise because it's different, unusual, and (I think) accentuates my long fingers. It was apparently designed for the Marquise de Pompadour by King Louis XIV. Then, I also read on this website that "A marquise shape preference, then, may indicate a superficial attitude toward wealth or a desire for extravagant appearances." Jerks. (All the rest of the diamond-shape descriptions are so niiiice!
)
Anyway, what's your diamond cut, and why'd you pick it?
I have a cut corner princess. X-Factor from Whiteflash. I love square shapes, and I fell head over heels for a Lucida. Problem was that we didn't have the budget for a Lucida. So we got something similar. I also looked at Jubilee, Princess of Hearts, and HOF Dream if you're looking at that cut of diamond. My ring sparkles like nothing else and I love it!
Boy designed mine, but it was still exactly what I wanted. She's a 3 stone round brilliant. He did a great job!
I have a Princess cut!! I love the square cut!! All my diamonds are princess.
Mines a radiant...they're usually square I think but mines rectangular.
I have a cushion cut, haven't seen many people with a cushion cut and love the soft edges. My setting is sort of antique too which I love.
I have a square cut radiant.
Here is a clip from an article explaining diamond shapes:
"The radiant cut diamond is the first rectangular cut to have a complete brilliant facet pattern applied to both the crown and pavilion and as such presents a much more dazzling and brilliant diamond
Radiant cut diamonds are especially popular for fancy-color diamonds because the shape, proportioning and facet arrangement intensify the color."
I love that there are so many different options so that there is a cut that fits every personality.
I've got a rectangular radiant. I loved the rectangular, cut-cornered shape of the emerald cut, but wanted a little more flash. With the radiant, I got everything I wanted!
Mine is actually VERY unique. It is cut in the shape of an octagon. By having it this shape, it adds extra facets so that is sparkles like crazyyyy!! :) :) :) My hubby picked it out all by himself. He saw how much it sparkled and knew instantly that it was the one for me! :)
I have a princess-cut center stone with round side-stones. My wedding band also has round stones. I like the combination of two stone shapes.
I chose a simple round cut. At first I wanted to be all unique and go for something totally different. But then I picked my ring setting, and nothing suits the ring better than a round diamond!
Mine is an emerald cut. I just like the vintage look to it, but silly me was so excited to look at things that I didn't ask or research about what sparkles the most and all that. I would eventually love to swap it out for a rectangular radiant, but I think this bad boy is with me until the end of time. Now I know...le sigh.
@Lillindy- I think emerald cuts are very classy. There is something really compelling about all the clean lines :)
But I do agree with you on the research point. It *never* hurts to be as informed as possible about your choices before making such a big purchase...
Another round here. I prefer rounded edges: cushion, round, oval etc. FH chose round b/c he liked it the most.
Round, brilliant cut. Set with pave diamonds down the sides. My fiance picked both the stone and setting. He did good!!
Very true doctorgirl, I also think they are classy. It's just hard to keep them sparkly because of the long facets. I still love my ring, though, but I hope future brides do more research than I did when they begin talking about getting engaged. Actually, their FH's should also do the research. Mine knew the kind of stuff I liked and he went ahead and got the ring, but if he had also done research (knowing how much I love sparkly things) maybe he would have discovered the rectangular radiant.
The one I'm expecting to get is a round. I think the uniqueness comes from the ring more than the diamond. I love a flashy ring, but I really wanted something that was sensible for the day to day.
Round, brilliant cut, fancy yellow diamond set in platinum and gold. Super sparkly and I love it!
Mine is round and I love it. In fact out of all my friends i am the only one with a round diamond.
@emilybrooke, kiwi - that's cool! I was told by one jeweler I could get a rectangular radiant instead of an emerald, if I chose too.
@teeleaf22 - I think I'd have a cushion if I didn't choose a marquise. I think they look great in an antique setting (my marquise has an antiquey setting too - I'd post a pic but I don't have it juuuuust yet!).
@hisMrs - OOOOOO cool! I'd love to see pics of that!
@chelseamorning - Cool... Mine's got round side stones and the center marquise - the contrast is nice.
@Mightysapphire - sometimes that's just how it happens!
@Lillindy - I liked the different cut of the emerald when I looked - I thought it classy (like doctorgirl said), but found that jewelers were telling me that radiant would be more sparkly (ended up not getting either, though!). I agree with y'all about the research. My man actually knew tons more about diamonds than I did, and had to teach me a lot when I started looking at the 4C's. And your ring is beautiful!!
@Habibi - I too like rounded edges. Funny how my marquise has two big sharp ones!! At least I'll be able to defend myself if I need to... LOL.
@rosychicklet - Cool! I considered colored stones, but I'm just too fickle when it comes to colors. I don't even buy colored clothes or shoes, or even cars! This year I like pink and orange, last year I liked green.. etc. Otherwise I'd be all over a colored stone (or at least colored accent stones).
@quirkyparsnip - I know what you mean. I debated whether mine was too flashy... but I really love it, and think it will be beautiful. Hopefully you gals can judge for yourselves pretty soon!
@BetaBride - that's very cool! Your cut is what a lot of people say is the most popular style (and for good reason, it's beautiful and sooo sparkly!), and ended up being unique anyway ;).
My guy picked mine out all by himself, and he got EXACTLY what I wanted. It's a princess cut with princess side stones and antique-style engraving on the band. We actually just picked out the matching wedding ring yesterday, and I can't WAIT to get it!!
I was torn between round or radiant. I fell in love with the estate look and really like the square settng with a round diamond dropped in or the round settings with a radiant center stone.
I ended up getting a really odd peice though. The center stone is square but instead of having straight edges each side is rounded. You have to look close to see it but it's there. I like that it is kind of a compromise between the two. But it definitey leans toward the square shape which I love :)
@rnc620 - ooo I really like the rounded edges on that setting. My setting is similar (only for a marquise. I will show everyone when I get it!
Round, old world cut ( i think thats the name, it was my grandma's stone) I always pictured myself a square girl, but i think the round suits me just wonderfully.
Mine is round. I thought I wanted cushion, but I am in love withthe ring he picked out!
I have a radiant cut. I was having a tough time choosing between pricess and emerald, and when I saw a radiant cut I fell in love because for me, it was the best of both worlds!
The only diamond ring I ever liked was one I saw on Antiques Roadshow. It was a five carat Asscher with tapered baguettes on the side. I love my half carat Asscher solitaire, but one of these days...
I've got a square cushion. Before I decided on the cushion, I seriously considered the asscher cut.
Pear shaped here! :) I like how it elongates my fingers.
Here is a picture of my octagon ring :) These pictures are actual pictures of my ring. My hubby took pictures of them in the studio at his work. :)
Ok so I am not sure if the whole attachement thing worked... it was giving me a hard time. My post on my blog might be an easier place to see my ring! :)

Take care,
hisMrs
rnc620 -- I think yours is a cushion cut!
Mine is a cushion cut and I LOVE it. I got to pick out the diamond myself and then we had the ring made. It was inspired by the Tiffany Novo.
