its your ring so I would go with whatever will truly make you and your FI happy but it does sound lik you want more than you can afford so the princess cut diamond could be a good route especially if it has good specs.

I think you should go with the ring you love.  It was so nice of your FMIL to offer her diamond, but ultimately, the ring is going to be on your finger so you need to love it.

@AllyCRN:  it sounds like you really want your plan A which I would go for especially if its only a couple of hundred dollars different, thats easy to replenish depending on your personal finances.

I think you should go with a diamond you love and not settle. You want to love this ring!

@AllyCRN:  If it were me and the couple hundred bucks wouldn’t break the bank I would get what I wanted.  If the couple hundred bucks would break the bank I would get a smaller cushion cut diamond.  I’m with you I do not like princess cuts and I can’t really imagine wearing one and feeling the same way I do about a round.

Don’t take your MIL’s diamond. I don’t know about you, but I think over ti,e I might feel resentful about it. Just get the diamond you & your BF picked out.

@AllyCRN:  would she be willing to give you the diamond to use for a necklace? you could wear it on your wedding day as your something old and have it to pass down to future children?

@AllyCRN:  get the set you can afford now, with the cushion you love. IF you want to, you can upgrade the stone in the future. you might even be able to get a larger stone into the current setting, depending on the design.

It’s nice that you love the symbolism of taking your MIL’s ring. but if you don’t like princess cuts at all, then you might regret it.  she gave you an out and it sounds like her feelings would not be hurt at all. get what you really want instead!

I would go for the heirloom, but I”m biased, as I have an heirloom center stone (in a setting we chose) and I love love love it! But of course, you should do what would make you the happiest!
