  • What sort of support does she have should there be complications during the birth?
  • What drugs / medications does she have access to during labour and immediately afterwards
  • How many births does she attend per month
  • Does she work with a particular birthing unit / OB / hospital should a homebirth not be available to you
  • What is her philosophy on scans / interventions / inductions / pain relief etc
  • How available is she should you have questions / concerns etc
  • What sort of qualifications and training does she have

FWIW I’m in New Zealand and the majority of births are attended by midwives.  For me personally I’m using a specialist home birth midwife although I’ll be giving birth in the local hospital.  I really like her philosophy on natural birthing and am hoping for a drug-free birth if everything goes according to plan.

I think it’s really important that you go with a midwife who makes you comfortable and that you mesh with, TTC, pregnancy and birth are such personal and life changing experience so it’s critical that you go with somebody you get along with.

@jjmomma:  I’m not familiar with midwives, but I didn’t know you meet with one before you’re pregnant?

Kemma gave some good advice!

I know in Canada, midwives play the same role as an OB, so if you want to TTC, you can meet with your midwife/OB ahead of time to find the right caretaker for you!

Best wishes with TTC 🙂

@jjmomma:  Ah, I see, kind of like an interview? Or a preconception appointment? I’ve heard of that with OBs, just never with midwives. Like I said, I know nothing about midwives. It’s very uncommon in my area =)

@jjmomma:  Very cool! Did you learn a lot? Are you going with her?
