We just got a $200 check (in the mail with a card) from one of FI’s uncles (and aunt) that won’t be attending the wedding. I know if I wrote a check out that I’d want it cashed fairly soon. So do I send the thank you and then cash the chekc a few days after I send the thank you? Do I wait to cash the check until the wedding!? over a month away?????? I just don’t want to do the wrong thing and break etiquitte because I can see the proper etiquitte going both ways!!!
What do you think?

that post was totally supposed to go into etiquitte! oops!

I’m not sure what etiquette dictates, but if I were the one sending a check I would DEFINITELY want the person to cash the check ASAP so nothing happens to it and so I knew they received it. I’d also appreciate an early thank you card.

I would expect the couple to cash it now, they could forget all about the cheque they sent you by your wedding date, that would be terrible, for both them and you, if it bounced.

i think i would cash it right away so the sender knows that it was received. i would also send them a thank you note as soon as i cashed it.

I would write the thank you first (as a nod to etiquette) and feel free to cash it as soon as the note is in the mail.

I’d cash it and write and mail the thank you both today.

Mail the thank-you card and cash the check on the same day. They will receive the card in 2-3 days MAX, and this guarantees you wont mess up their finances by waiting to cash it, or hurt their feelings by waiting to send the thank you card.
This is what Darling Husband & I did with all the checks we received at the wedding, we put them in the bank of Sunday, and mailed the thank-you cards first thing Monday morning.

I actually held on to the checks we received because they were all dated for our wedding day. Otherwise I would have cashed them right away.

I would cash it now and send a thank you note. 🙂
