I hate to say it but I think those dimensions would look a bit awkward. 12' just seems really small for a base.
If it's pricing you're worried about, how about a very small display cake and then serving sheet cake?
6,8,10,12 would work fine!
Here's a sample of a cake w/ the same dimensions:

We had a square cake, 4 tiers (6, 9, 12, 14) I think....It was big. We had 250 guests and totally didn't NEED 4 tiers that big, but we LOVED it - so we just went for it :) I think you should too. Here's our cake:
We did 3 tiers square, but I have to tell you this. The top tier was given to the bride & groom to take home,so it wasn't cut. I was worried the 2 tiers wouldn't be enough for 120,but the slices were generous and there was plenty. I also think we should have had a cake stand to make ours have more prominence. For my next daughter's wedding next May,we've already got the stand covered. lol
Here's my daughter's cake in buttercream.
we're doing 10", 8", 6", and 4" -- but that's only for 50 people.
OMG SMYLEY - My cake is exactly the same!!! I just tried to post pics but it didn't work...I have to try again!
6, 8, 10, 12 will serve 125 people!
Here's a square cake, same dimensions:

MrsK...I think YOUR cake was OUR cake inspiration! I hope you don't mind. I had no idea where I found it to copy & give to our baker. She wanted to do it in fondant & we wanted buttercream...it HAS to be you! THANK YOU!!
Smyley - I'm so glad!!! It was lovely! When was the wedding ???
I'm so flattered to have been your inspiration
June 20,2009..........thank you again! I got vintage crystal brooches to use,but yours was definitely it!
I work as a cake decorator and I think 6, 8, 10, 12 would look fine. I would definitely go round. What you're gonna get is a skinny, tall type of cake. Sometimes this style can look absolutely gorgeous!
we had 100 guests and chose to have a 3 tier cake that served 150 people. it was a great amount. not sure what that equaled in terms of size since the baker went by slices.
I've been having trouble finding dimensions of cake pictures online. My baker doesn't have a 9' round, so she said we could provide one for her if we wanted a 6 9 12 14.
Does anyone have pictures of a 6-9-12-14 or a 6-8-12-14?
Thanks!
We are having a small wedding, but I want a tall cake. I think I am going to put flowers in between the layers so it looks taller. Have you thought of doing something like that?
Megs: Why do you want to go with those dimensions?? Couldn't you add another tier & avoid buying a pan?

We have met with potential bakers and received different answers on cake sizes so I am hoping to gather some feedback from bees!
We only need cake for 100-120, so they recommended a 6' 10' 14'. However, I love the look of 4 tiers. Neither baker will work with fake cakes, so we were wondering if smaller size tiers would look weird?
Has anyone used 6' 8' 10' 12' or something like that? Round or square- haven't decided!
Any feedback and pictures of your tier sizes would be so appreciated!
