I have the 5.5 and it is more than enough. I make stews and soups that feed a crowd in it.

I think if you have other larger pots then the 5.5 would be a good choice; its probably the most versatile.

And not to throw more options out, but have you considered the oval? You can cook a chicken in it, or a roast, so I like that shape better than round.

We have the giant skillet, and it holds a whole chicken. That’s probably not helpful at all, but may save you money on the larger pieces.

Shkragoldfish:  Since the cast iron is so thick that shouldn’t be a problem (I haven’t read reviews, but I did work at Williams Sonoma forever and never heard that). Once you heat the pan it will retain heat so well the shape won’t make much of a difference–I would guess maybe people didn’t really let the pan heat up all the way? My parents have one and I love using it!

I registered for a 5.5, but my husband bought me a 3.5 for the Valentines Day right before we got married. I felt too bad returning a gift from him, and then I felt too bad also registering for the 5.5. I now totally wish that I had a 5.5 — the 3.5 is too small, and I think the 7.25 would be pretty big (and heavy!).

As an aside, I took the 5.5 off the registry, but somehow we had THREE separate couples buy us 3.5qts, leaving me with FOUR 3.5qt Le Creuset ovens, and all three had to be returned (one to an outlet which was a huge PITA).
