my ring size is a 5.5, the ctr solitare is 1.5 karats, with 1 karats around it... i<3it!!!!!
You can check out a weight vs. finger size chart here, which is pretty interesting (but just a guideline). I have long, skinny fingers with a 4.25 ring finger size, and 1.4 carats looks nice on me, though I'm sure I could go bigger or smaller without any problem.
E-rings are so personal its hard to say whats a 'good' size. I'm a size 4.5 with a 1.3 center. That was my 'dream' size, with cost constraints. If I had gone the moissanite route where cost wasnt an issue, I could have happily went as far as 1.6. Personally, I think any larger than that would've been too big for my finger. G'luck!
I wear a size 7.5 (and my fingers are pretty long), and I went with the 1.5 carat in a very classic Tiffany inspired setting. I also have a moissanite! I love it. We chose it over a diamond for ethical and financial reasons, and I'm very happy with our choice. Plus, it's more sparkly than and diamond and the precision in the stone and in the cut is amazing. I don't notice any yellow coloration eithier.
At a size 5, I think a 1 carat would be a good choice to still be believable/not too gaudy but still wow people. If you want a little bit more "wow", I think you could do a 1.25 or even 1.5 carat as well though.

@pinkshoes: Yes, I realize it's a bit of a preference. I have to try on more rings of different sizes before I make my choice haha! Thanks for your input though!
@mara86: I've seen your ring before on this forum and I have to say I absolutely LOVE it! It's exactly what I want haha. I am just afraid a 1.5 ct may look too big on my finger. It looks PERFECT on you though! I basically want that exactly effect with my ring! haha
@pui.puni: lol thanks! I have posted it a lot! When I was trying to figure out what ring to buy I spent so much time on forums looking around
@pui.puni: We ordered it from moissaniteco.com. Their customer service is really good and it took a little over a week for them to make the ring and ship it.
@mara86: Thanks so much! Your gem looks so clear and beautiful! We were thinking of ordering from moissaniteco.com too, but we're going to get just the loose stone and then have the setting made elsewhere.
@mara86: btw, if you have any more photos of your ring you'd like to post, I wouldn't mind *whistles*
it really is beautiful!
@mara86: What a beautiful ring!
With cost not being any object, I would say anything up to 1.5 carats would look great. Anything over that may very well look too gaudy. If I were you, I would probably go with 1-1.25 carats because my taste is not too flashy, and I have smaller fingers like you.
You mentioned you want it to be "believable" -- do you mean you'd like to not get questioned about whether or not your stone is "real?" That's kind of an issue when you get a big diamond alternative... you have to be prepared to get asked about it. People will notice it more, and comment on it, and then you have to choose what you're comfortable with sharing about it (either brushing off the questions or telling the person what it is) since even though it's another gemstone, people will assume that it's either a diamond, or a "fake" diamond.
Anyway, because of that issue, I would only go big enough to "wow" myself (as opposed to everyone who walks by), KWIM? I wouldn't try to make it flashy at all. And I think anything close to 1 ct would do the trick (look lovely without attracting more attention than you want). I wouldn't go much bigger than a carat. Best of luck!!
@littlemissmango: When I say believable, I mean I don't want it to look like costume jewelry.
For instance I think mara's stone is enough to wow anybody, yet looks believable (at least on her finger size). But something like this does not look believable to me (even though it is a diamond), because it is just so large (it's 1.66 ct, only slightly bigger than Mara's ring!). I bet the second girl gets asked "omg is that REAL?" all the time, and I kind of just want people to think it's real without a thought. Even though imo, my ring will be real, it will be a real moissanite, not a "fake diamond". I'd just rather avoid having to explain it to everyone.
I would like to take the opportunity to talk about the corrupt diamond industry and moissanite to people who are actually willing to listen, but I'd like most strangers to think it's a regular ol' engagement ring!
I think the fact that I am interested in a classic solitaire will help with the wow factor even with a smaller stone, since those styled settings highlight the stone's beauty already.
In any case, I think I really do have to try on rings to know exactly what will work for me. I'm thinking 1 ct to 1.25 ct, but we'll see!
@pui.puni: I can't repost the picture because I am at work, but a little past halfway down the first page of this post you can see mine:

My finger is a size 5 and the stone is 1 ct. It's a moissanite.
I'm a 5.5, and my diamond's a 2ct. I have really big knuckles, so stones tend to look smaller on my finger than most people. Also, where I live (Manhattan) 2 ct is nothing special and doesn't raise any eyebrows.

@pui.puni, you'd be surprised that people will sometimes ask if a 1-1.25 carat is real, too. People just ask. They're rude. So pick what you want!

Hey everyone!
My fiance and I recently became engaged. He proposed without a ring so that we could choose our engagement ring together.
I want a very classic tiffany-style solitaire.
For ethical and economical reasons, we have decided to go with an enhanced Moissanite gem instead of a diamond. Because we are choosing moissanite, price is not so much an issue (well, to an extent of course!)
I want a stone size that is big enough to wow people, yet small enough that it's believable and not too gaudy. My ring size is 5.
What size stone would you suggest?
Also, Does anyone have any photos of different carat sizes on a size 5 finger for reference?
Thank you!
