I went to Target this afternoon and ended up buying some cucumber melon hand lotion. It's one of the smells that instantly soothes and calms me. I think it brings me back to my childhood, when I stayed weeks at my grandmother's house in the summertime.
I also love the smell of clean laundry and bleach.

So, what smells bring you to instant heaven?

I'm running the risk of sounding TOTALLY Grade-A creepy, but....puppies! Hahah. I just love the way our dogs smell, especially after baths.

Also, grape. I associate grape with my mom - she used to drink lots of grape stuff, it's her favorite. So I have lots of Grape/Vineyard candles that are the best. :)

ETA: Oh, and books! Especially old books!

Warm vanilla sugar (from B&BW), clean laundry, my pajamas (I can't describe it, but reminds me of my childhood), and anything from a baby (except diapers).

Bleach reminds me of my Nana cleaning the house and Old Spice reminds me of my grandpa :) He always smelled so good even in his 80's. Crew hair gel reminds me of when my dad gels his hair for special ocassions, that stuff smells so good!!

My husband's body wash and deodorant makes me happy too, I used his deodorant once before working the night shift because I couldn't find mine and I found it so comforting to smell him all night haha... since I couldn't sleep in his armpit all night like usual ;)

Apparently I find men's bathroom products very comforting haha

Sunscreen and coconut scents, anything beachy reminds me of my family when I was a kid. We'd always take a beach vacation every year and the smell has ingrained itself in my memories.

The smell of a camp fire! This is the most comforting smell in the world to me, as I grew up camping literally ALL summer. In fact, my wedding will be in the state park that I grew up camping in!

    re: bleach

I cannot stand that smell. I avoid cleaning with cleach at all costs (because of the smell and because of the toxicity). My BFF loves the smell. It's funny how one smell comforts on person but disgusts another.

Vanilla, Lavender, I adore Johnson's vanilla baby body lotion :P

I think vanilla is my go-to fragrance for comfort. I have about 3 different body sprays in vanilla sugar.

@brenda.m.fields:  I hate the smell of bleach.  It makes me sick to my stomach but I use it to clean my nasty shower anyway (long story).  I actually prefer the smell of vinegar to bleach and that's saying something.

I love the smell of lemon or citrus in general.

EDIT: I also really love a certain potpourri that my aunt has at her house.  It smells so delightful, I want to say it's mulberry?  I also love the smell of strawberries. :)

My two big ones are bread baking in an oven or freshly baked bread, and my husband's body wash. Sometimes when he's out of town I use it when I take a shower so I can go to sleep smelling him Embarassed

@janie-janie:  Oooh, old books! Love it. Also, the general smell that libraries have - I guess that's mostly the books, right?

@nutMeg13:  Agree about campfire as well.

    Others I find comforting:

    • Sunscreen & beach-y smells
    • Amber & sandalwood scented items
    • Meatloaf
    • This weird mixture of smells from my grandma's pantry, predominantly onion and furniture polish
    • Turpentine and wood shavings
    • Menthol and perfume (what my mom's purse smells like)
    • Popcorn

Cedar. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest there was always a cedar tree nearby. It is my ultimate comfort scent.

Laundry detergent, DH's cologne & deoderant, and the smell of my mom's pillow (weird, I know)... whenever she was out of town when I was little I would steal one of her pillows to sleep with because it smelled like her.

DH is gone for a month, so currently I'm sleeping with his pillow and one of his shirts... I feel like I'm 3 years old!

am I weird for say Bush Fire Smoke??

If FI comes home from a fire, which I havent been at (more and more common these days), I just have to have a hug.  I love the smell of that smoke while snuggled in to his chest.

I also love jumping into the Bush Fire Trusk a few days after a job. MMMMM, love that smokey smell!!!!

the smell of lilacs, my mother has a huge lilac tree in front of her house. when i used to live there, my room was right by it so in the spring if i left my windows open my room would be flooded with the smell.

any type of christmas smell. christmas is very huge in my house, think christmas on steriods.

loreal lipsticks, my mother used to wear these when i was little and like all little girls i loved putting her lipsticks on. till this day eventhough i like mac lipsticks better, i stil have at least one loreal because of the smell.

    my SO's scent without cologne.

More than anything... Old Spice Original. SO wears the deoderant and the smell of it (even if its not on him) brings me to his "nook"... a very happy place indeed.

Also, my mom's perfume brings me back to a child-like comfort... Nothing a mom's love can't fix.

Apparently a lot of mine revolve around laundry -- clean laundry, my FI's scent (which is at least partially his detergent), my mom's smell (ditto on the detergent). I also feel calmed by the scent of coffee, the smell of wet earth right after it's rained just a little bit, the similar damp smell of our garage at home...

The smell of food, baking, fresh washed laundry hanging out in the air. I also like Chanel and Tresor. I connect those scents with my mother. I love my mum!
