I am in need of suggestions. My wedding is in three weeks and we haven't picked a song to be our firat dance! Yikes!
Thank you in advance! :)
Oooh! It is my #1 wish to help another couple find their first dance song! What are your tastes in music?
Do y'all have a "song"? We'll be dancing to Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder in honor of our daughter (it's our vow renewal) On the night we eloped, we danced to At Last by Etta James in the middle of the Bellagio. We will probably also dance to that as well.
First, decide on a slow song or a medium tempo song.
Then think about the kind of music you like, favorite songs, favorite bands. I bet you'll find one in no time. Good Luck.
KateMW: those are two of my favorite songs IN THE WORLD. You rock. Seriously, I hope you have a wonderful vow renewal!
"Hey Ya" by matt weddle. It's a remake of the Outkast version, slower, and acoustic. We didn't want anything too lovey dovey- because in public we're not a lovey dovey couple. (we're in the closet!)

I like when couples choose different or classic first dance songs. My cousin danced to "all my life" by K-C and Jo Jo when it was really popular... I think him and his wife both cringe now when someone brings that up. (not that there's anything wrong with that song brides who are choosing that as their song! :)
We haven't picked ours yet but a couple ideas for you are...
Nat King Cole-Unforgettable
Etta James-At Last
Edwin McCain-I'll Be
Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Calliat-Lucky
Ronan Keating-When You Say Nothing At All
Shania Twain-Still The One
Tim McGraw/Faith Hill-It's Your Love
Up until two weeks before the wedding, we couldn't agree on a song for our first dance, but when we heard Boyz II Men's "Just My Imagination" on the radio we both turned to each other and had an a-ha moment, it was the perfect song for us!
Oohh! I've been doing tons of research on this! During our ceremony, my two girlfriends are going to play guitar and sing Green Eyes by Coldplay. They are both musicians and perform locally! My guy and I both have green eyes and the lyrics are perfect!! We're still debating our song for the first dance, but we don't want to be too traditional and dance to all the same wedding songs everyone uses! I want to entertain my guests, not bore them with the same-o-same-o. (No offense anyone!!)
some more ideas
country:
These Are The Days - Sugarland
Take Me There- Rascal Flatts
Lost In This Moment - Big & Rich
Other style:
Groove Me - King Floyd (our favoriate so far! Great sexy couple song with a great beat to dance to!) Music sets the mood, so choose wisely!
danigirlygirl - I LOVE the song Green Eyes!! How awesome of your friends to do that for you guys!
Well, we are both really into Alternative Rock (I know, how romantic :) Early nineties mostly. We do appreciate the oldies-but-goodies as well, but this is where we begin to disagree. He likes Led Zeppelin... not much to work with there. I like "Let my love open the door" by Pete Townshend. So cute and fun! But he says NO WAY. He wants to do something a little more unique and not so run of the mill. Music means a lot to us both and I would be so sad to hear this song later in life and cringe (I do know a few people that danced to KC and Jojo). I was hoping to find something a little edgy but still romantic....
I just listened to "Hey Ya" by Matt Weddle. What an AMAZING voice!! I love Acoustic versions of almost any song. At first it was hard to not imagine the melody of the Outkast version but he sings with so much heart. 4 1/2 minutes might be stretching it for Mr. Wonderful though.
We've taken that version of hey ya and had it cut down to 3 minutes. There's a lot of it you don't need... don't rule out altering songs :)
@maureen9004--Help out a tecnhologically-challenged bride here! Can you explain how you ripped and edited that? I think FI and I would like something a little more "offbeat" for our first dance song, and this would totally fit the bill!
FI and I are R&B/Hip Hop heads. Wedding Vows (The Day I Married My Angel) by Jamie Foxx is good, but very very slow. http://www.weddingwire.com/shared/WeddingSongsMusic?ugcid=6e2945e77806e05b&cid=Wedding-Bride%20Entrance-Songs
My personal favorite is Differences by Ginuwine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A83DbFlF1Wo
I wanted to do something a little different from the usual so we narrowed it down to 2 songs: DMB "Steady as we go" and Michelle Featherstone "We are man and wife" both are great.
We had a hard time choosing, but the week before the wedding, we picked a version of "Let It Be Me" by Rosie Thomas. It's cool that it was an updated standard- we can hear other versions of it in public and think, "Aww, it's our song!"
We both love "Everything" by Michael Buble, but being that we both have two left feet, we are re-thinking.. it's just a bit too fast for us to know what to do for 3 minutes. I've always love "True Companion" but I'm afraid it's overdone...
We aren't huge country fans or anything, but Willie Nelson is one of our favorites. Unfortunately most of Willie's songs are really sad, so we picked "All of Me" which is sweet and upbeat, even if it is sort of a breakup song. I think we kinda viewed it in perspective of our many years of long-distance instead.
We danced to "For crying out Loud" by Meatloaf. It is DH favorite song. I thought it was just way too long, so halfway through the DJ invited all couples to come up and dance with us. It was really nice.
We danced to "I'll Look After You" by The Fray. Pretty different but it meant a lot to the both of us as we love the band. Good luck finding something that fits the two of you!
Here's my suggestions, not very traditional songs, but if you're looking for something different:
The Book of Love - The Magnetic Fields (Peter Gabriel also covered this song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox6aHGmfxB8
Nothing Matters When We're Dancing - The Magnetic Fields
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xTgAscp1nE
Question - Old 97's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQnKBWkk_4M
By the Way They Dance - Jump, Little Children (This song is a bit long but is beautiful)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE4BBe1mRY8
Heartbeats - Jose Gonzalez (Used in one of the best commercials I've ever seen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bb8P7dfjVw
And if I had the guts to do a choreographed fast dance, I would do Yeh Yeh by They Might Be Giants
We danced to "Everything" by Michael Buble. I'm so glad we used an upbeat, happy song!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Th9pizyP-o
How about Lenny Kravitz "I Belong to You?" It's a really good "groove" sounding song, very chill and intimate. And it has great lyrics:
You are the flame in my heart, you light my way in the dark, you are the ultimate star. You lift me up from above, your undonditional love, takes me to paradise.
I belong to you, and you, you belong to me too. You make my life complete, you make me feel so sweet. You make me feels so divine, your soul and mine our entwined. Before you I was blind.
But since I've opened my eyes, and with you there's no disguise, so I could open up my mind.
I always loved you from the start, but I could not figure out that I had to do it everyday. So I put away the fight; now I'm gonna live my life, giving you the most in every way.
Repeat chorus.
We're considering "Me and Mrs. You" - Michael Buble or "Angel" -Jack Johnson.
We're getting married in 2 weeks and recently changed our first dance song from "When I Said I Do" (Clint Black and Lisa Hartman-Black) to "Everything" by Michael Buble'. I love When I Said I Do but it's a little slow and "Everything" is mid-tempo and will be easier to dance to.....we still plan on having When I Said I Do played sometime during the night.
We are walking back down the aisle to "At Last"...Love that song and had to have it played.
I don't know if these would be great "first dance" songs, but I think "i'll follow you into the dark" by death cab for cutie and "the story" by brandi carlisle are two of the sweetest songs! (maybe a little emo, but still sweet!)
Because you like 90s alt rock, here are some thoughts:
Blur- Tender

Blur- To the End
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA0XsAqjizE
The Cranberries (cover of)- They Long to Be (Close to You)

Smashing Pumpkins- Beautiful
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwdxbMXet0o&feature=related
Smashing Pumpkins- Tonight, Tonight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsZYqaSc4cU
And as for Willie Nelson:
And So You Will My Love

Good luck!
What do you think about "Like You'll Never See Me Again"
by Alicia Keys?
MY FI and I picked "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the indie movie Once. The song actually won the Oscar this year for Best Original Song. My FI and I loved this movie and it just so happened to play on the radio right before he proposed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPbC2YrUUsI
We are dancing to "Come Away with Me" by Nora Jones (love her...), it is so beautiful -- I tear up everytime I hear it during our dance classes.
I don't have a suggestion. We are dancing to "Baby it's Fact" by Hellogoodbye and we hired "Orange County Wedding Dance" to choreograph it for us. It is going to be lots of fun!
We're dancing to Jason Mraz "I'm Yours". Cute and not too sappy! It took us a while to choose. You'll know when you've found the right song...trust me!
i struggled with this for a while as my FI was fairly open to many different songs.....
for now its John Legend's "Stay With You"....it's 4 mins long so i'm really hoping our dj can edit it down to 3 mins tops.
i'm pretty sure we're sticking with this one bc nothing else is really grabbing me and he's happy with this choice.
We danced to "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. It is not a typical first dance song, or love song, for that matter. We loved the sweet message and it was just perfect for us. It is a nice and slow song that is easy to dance to. We had tons of guests asking us what it was afterwards...we loved it, they loved it, perfect!
THANK YOU Ladies! You have helped a lot. What do you think of this one? It's Dave Matthews covering a Beatles song - we love the Beatles! And it's only 2:30 long ![]()
We'll be dancing to Jason Mraz's song, "Lucky." It's cutie and a lovely duet. We're actually thinking of recording it with us singing it. The lyrics are also significant to us because we were long distance for most of our relationship before we got engaged. We're saving "our song" for the last song of the night and it's Stevie Wonder's "I believe."
Brookem, I was at a wedding where they used that DMB cover of In My Life for the first dance, and it was perfect! So sweet, and the short length is a bonus too :)
We danced to "I'm Sticking with You" by Velvet Underground. Recently made popular by the Juno soundtrack, but it's kinda been our song for a long time. We're not dancers really, so we wanted something sweet and silly-- it was exactly that!
Good luck!
