I really, really suck at the dress shopping thing. They are all too pretty. So, what would you Bees recommend for me? Specific designers and style recommendations welcome!
I’m 28 and having a summer wedding (shouldn’t be too hot though, 70s max)
I’m 5′ 4″ and wear a size 4-6 – my hips are quite wide compared to my waist (39″ compared with 24″).
I like pretty much everything except pickups or too much beading. I don’t want a very long train. I love sweetheart necklines. I don’t especially care for satin but could be convinced!
I guess that makes me pretty dull and average – so how do I get the special feeling of The Dress?!?

they say if you’re pear shaped you should look at a lines or fit and flare (sometimes they call them trumpet)- the nicest ones I’ve tried on so far were Allure and Watters/Wtoo. I know alot of bees are big fans of Maggie Sottero. You really need to get out there and try on a bunch of different shapes and fabrics, it’s the only way to know…

Have you tried going dress shopping yet? I didn’t know ANYTHING about dresses until I went dress shopping. And I managed to pick out a dress within 48 hours! It can be done! I think once you start trying on dresses, you will see what you like and don’t like! I tried on one ballgown and hated it, so that narrowed my search down to fitted dresses. I realized I loved lace, so that narrowed it down even more.
Also, it helps to spend some time looking at dresses on Pinterest! That’s what I did, and I printed out ~20 pictures to take to the dress shop, and that helped the sales lady helping me to find dresses that I would like. But I didn’t know about 1 dress that I “had to have” before I went in!

Thanks both. I have been dress shopping and tried on several different styles – from huge ball gowns to silk sheath dresses. The only things I have determined so far are in my first post – I liked them all!
I haven’t tried any fit and flare, I was worried they’d make my hips look really wide but maybe if you got it, you should flaunt it…?
I guess I figure I’m a pretty “average” person in terms of age/height/weight etc. so some bees may have favourite gowns to point out to me!

What about a dropped waist ballgown? I’m not in love with my own hips either and that style was the most flattering on me.
