I think everyone gets a few surprise gifts – what sort of things did you receive that you didn’t register for?
I had a close family friend gift me a framed guestbook photomat – despite the fact that I’d already created a book. C’est la vie, we had two guestbooks 🙂
We also never registered for toasting flutes and just planned on using some cheap “2012” New Year’s flutes we had. Instead, my MIL gifted us an engraved set. It’s nice (from Things Rememembered, I think) although not quite our style. Makes me wish I’d added that to the registry.

I’m not married yet but I’ve already received gifts that were not on my registry: Two picture frames, a pizza stone, a crystal bowl from Tiffany’s, and a silver tray. Some of these I’m sure were really expensive, but none of them are our style. So they being returned =T
After our wedding, I’m never ever buying off-registry again!

Large, mosaic picture frames which read “love” and “home”- Definately not our style.
A Magic Bullet – awesome sentiment, but we already have one.
A case of canned dog food.

I may be one of the only bees who’s like this, but I LOVED the stuff we got that wasn’t on the registry. I tend to have a hard time buying “nice” things when we can get something like it for a lot less. For instance, my sister and another person got us amazing serving dishes and bowls from Crate & Barrel and another high end store. I LOVE them and use them all the time now! I also love the engraved frames we got; our wedding pictures will be beautiful in them and I’m not really one to buy myself/us engraved frames. Someone else made a beautiful quilt…how sweet! Another person got us this amazing wine picnic pack. It’s so adorable.
I will admit, I did get some random Thanksgiving decor from someone, that’s not really our style. But heck, I’ll throw the ceramic turkey on display for the week of Thanksgiving…it is the thought that counts. 🙂

@CityBearBride: I agree with you – after my wedding I kept to the registry (even when it meant buying some pretty boring gifts).
@metalbride: It’s pretty funny when people try and force their style on you or assume something is univeral enough to be liked by everyone.
We received a picnic basket, too – an awesome idea! Except we had registered for/received one already. I’m saving it to (eek) regift at some point, because it is very nice and very unreturnable.

Multiple decorative bowls
Several decorative glass figurines
Several candlesticks/candle holders
Some kitchenware that we didn’t register for: sugar/creamer set, frying pans
That’s all I can remember.
ETA: Oh yeah! We got a picnic basket, too. All super nice stuff and lovely thoughts… but generally if we didn’t register for it it was because we already had it, or we didn’t have room for it. We live in a really small apartment! I felt bad returning stuff, but that’s what we did when we could.

We only got one thing we didn’t register for- a vase. It’s not really our style, but we still appreciated the thought.

I got an apron with my new last name on it (made by a girlfriend of mine, it was so cute!) and my FMIL got me an authentic NFL jersey of our favorite team with my new last name as the name & the year I was born as the number — FI loved that one! My 2 best friends & sister went in together and got me a huge suitcase & filled it with a bunch of goodies for the honeymoon (bathingsuit, flip flops, bracelets & earings, sunglasses, sunscreen, travel sized deordants, toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, floppy beach hat, beach towels etc), we got some restaurant gift cards, some cute picture frames, a cute Dachshund planter (we have a dachshund), a cooler that had beer & champagne in it.. honestly every gift we got that we weren’t registered for I really liked!

We didn’t register for a lot of serveware, mainly because we already had it. Apparently people either think we party a lot, or really enjoy eating off large platters, because we got TONS of extra serveware.
Odd, only because we still have plenty of items on our registry. So it’s not as if guests ran out of items to purchase.
Thankfully, we can return all of it.

I actually had good luck…only a couple people bought things not on the registry and they were all worth having! A nice crystal platter from Tiffany that is simple and classic, and a few Nambe pieces that weren’t on the registry, but they saw we had registered for other Nambe pieces (that were already taken) and bought similar style things that go great with the rest of our “collection” now. Everybody else either gave registry gifts or money.

A cheese dome. Seriously. WTF am I ever going to do with that?

We haven’t gotten anything off registry yet but now that I have gone through it, I would only get my friends what they put on their registry… unless it is something very special like a private joke or something sentimental. 🙂

I bought my friend named Tiffany an ink pen set from Tiffany as her wedding gift. It was not on her registery but she said she loved it. IDK reading the replies makes me feel kind of bad.

FI’s grandmother bought us a toaster oven. While I really appreciate the senitment, we don’t need a toaster oven and we both hate leaving a lot of things out on the counter.
We also received a monogrammed picnic basket from one of FI’s family friends. It was actually a great gift because it folds flat for storage and it isn’t something I would think of.
