FI and I are going to Ireland in 3 weeks, and we'd love to bring some little gifts for people we meet along the way. We have like 50 Canadian flag pins (people love them for some reason lol) and we're going to bring some Canadian artist's Thank You cards for the B&B owners etc.
Are there any little gifts that you'd like to get from Canada if someone was visiting you?!
Thanks!!
Something with the red maple leaf on it or even some real Canadian maple syrup, though I'm not sure if you can really travel with that.
@noenyu: Yes, I suggested syrup to my FI, but he was worried it would take up too much room or leak haha. But definitely a great suggestion!! Thank you!
Polar Bears, an Igloo, Large Poutine, maybe a dog sled team and a toque!
Haha, but seriously,
Postcards, Fridge Magnets, aboriginal art (dreamcatcher, moccasins, etc)
@noritake22: You don't have Smarties in the US?! dang, want me to send you some?? I'd be happy to! lol
@Lindsay05: hahaha I thought you were making fun of me :( But then I saw you're Canadian too so it's fine haha. Great suggestions!!
I once used Smarties (the real ones!) as "cover" to get into a bar into Florida. Bouncer found out we were Canadian and said for the rest of the time we were down there said if we could get him Smarties we were in!
@Ryansgirl: Maybe get some small favor bottles with capes that screw on? Not sure how leak proof those are though.
@Lindsay05: Yes! Poutine! I've personally always wanted to try that but even when I was in Canada, I never got the chance to.
@Ryansgirl: Yeah Syrup is a great idea, but on my way back from Quebec (my boss makes maple syrup out there and I brought back 6 cans) my luggage almost ended up overweight!
@noenyu: Ya I should go to the tourist shops and see what the packaging for syrup is. I'm sure they've figured it out, for people traveling with them. And PS, poutine is de-lic-ious!!
What are "Real" smarties? They're not the ones in the little plastic wrap/tube?
@LittleHunny: Yeah that's what I'm worried about...although I'm sure I wouldn't be bringing 6 cans! And if they're the cans I'm thinking...those are massive!
Maple syrup is like liquid gold. So expensive. Pins always go over great. You can go to your local city hall, explain what you are doing and sometimes they will give you a deal or give them to you for free.
@Ryansgirl: No, we don't have them where I am :-(
We have something called smarties. They are kind of like sweet tarts, but not really.
I would love for you to send me some, but I think I might be getting some from relatives when they come to our wedding :-)
Everyone in my family knows I love smarties. I grew up in Canada, and love all the cool candy. The US really can't compare, in my opinion.
Mmmm poutine!!
If you don't think maple syrup would work, what about those little maple leaf sugar candies? Those are soooo good!
I think the ideas you have so far are great - love those little flag pins! Maybe try hitting up a dollar store or walmart and see what they have. They usually have a section with Canada gear, especially around Canada Day! You definitely have time to browse around before October.
@noenyu: Smarties are kind of like m & m's, but they are made with milk chocolate, so to me they taste much much better. Here are a couple of pictures.

They don't have "real Smarties" in the USA, but they do have them in other places (maybe even Ireland!), so Smarties are great gifts for Yankees, but not so much for international friends. I think that flag pins and little maple syrup candies are great gifts.
@sceeder: Good idea!! I'll remember that for when I run out!
@noritake22: Okay, after your wedding, if your relatives don't bring you any, or you need more, let me know!!! It'll be a late wedding gift :)
@Catherine: and @Beluga: Great idea with the candies instead...easier to pack and not so heavy!
I think if you could find a smaller syrup that was sealed you could check it in your luggage. I'm pretty sure you're allowed to check it, maybe just not with you on the plane. Thats my vote (even thou I've never had it, I've heard its amazing).
Wait, what are "Canadian smarties"?? I LOVE smarties! I feel like I'm missing out! Here are USA smarties...

Oh my gosh, I'm going to have to talk my fiancé into bringing some Canadian Smarties down. I hate the Smarties we have (I guess American Smarties? lol). They're fruit flavor-ish and are like Swee Tarts but not as good.
Canada does seem to have good candies. My fiancé was talking about ones called Caramilk. Basically chocolate with caramel inside which isn't anything different but it still sounds so good.
I never knew there were other types of smarties. Are they better than m&m's?
And I know you can't do this for everyone but I inherited my grandmothers spoon collection. So maybe you could give a canadian collectors spoon to just a few people like the B&B owners?
Weirddd! (American) Smarties are calles Rockets in Canada! Blew my mind.
@noritake22: WHAAAAAAAT!?!??!? Canadian and American Smarties are different!?!?
BUT I had those chocolate Smarties in England which makes me think they sell them in Ireland.
how about smoked salmon? i know they make it available for travel. or Haida art, if you are from the west coast. cowhichan sweaters are super popular gifts .... hmmm ... i'll keep thinking
I also vote for maple sugar candy. I'm Canadian, and I still get excited about sugar candy,
so ......
i'm so sorry! i didn't understand (read!) the post ...small gifts! for people you meet ...gotcha ...my bad
This thread is hilarious!
Smarties are like M&Ms but they actually taste good LOL! I like rockets (American Smarties) too! But I love love love smarties!
Smarties are available in the UK and therefore only a good gift to bring to the US! We get alot of the British candies and chocolate and it is all the best I have ever tasted!
Cadbury is seriously the BEST chocolate!
So if you Americans don't have Cadbury do you not have Cadbury mini eggs?????
What about some Tim Horton's?????? LOL
A roll up the rim cup???
I was just going to say the same thing!
OP: mmmmaple sugar candy nom nom nom!
@Future Mrs. Martin: We only get Cadbury creme eggs around Easter, where I live at least, and no mini eggs that I've seen. No Tim Hortan's either but I think they do have some Northeast. Starbucks on every corner though lol. There's one in the mall, one in the Target in the mall, one at the bank that's in the same parking lot as the mall, and one in the shopping center across from the mall.
It blows my mind that they don't have bubbly chocolate in the US (Aero, Mirage). I think m&ms are better than smarties!
Other ideas:
Ice Wine (you can buy minis at LCBO)
Olympics stuff - those Canuck hats and red mittens from HBC are so popular now!
I agree with the maple sugar candy, yum!
Lol people really ran with the smarties theme! As an aside, they definitely have "Canadian" smarties in Ireland. The Olympic mittens are a good idea! Canadian mittens kick Iriish mittens asses! My Canadian boyfriend (now fiance...) once brought ice wine as a gift for my Irish mammy and she nearly packaged me up and gave me to him right there and then. A big hit!! Also- who wouldn't like maple sugar candy?!?
I'm thinking salt fish, salt beef, seal flipper pie, moose meat buns, and toutons with molasses! Bahahaha, a few treasured Newfoundland treats! lol Just kidding of course.
Seriously though I think the flags and pins are good! When I went to Ireland two summers ago I got some great Canadian and Newfoundland shot glasses from the dollar store and they went over incredibly well.
And on the Smarties subject, I once read/heard somewhere that our chocolate is better (or at least different in Canada) because we do not have to add the ingredient(s) that prevent chocolate from melting so quickly therefore our chocolate has a smoother, less waxey texture/taste. Any truth to that I wonder?
I always enjoy postcards with really beautful photographs on them.
Be cautious with things like Maple Syrup - I bought some "made in BC" maple syrup that was actually made in the USA! So read labels to make sure it really is Canadian maple syrup.
As an aside: I didn't know Cadbury was a mostly Canadian company! No mini-eggs at Easter?? Our poor neighbours in the States!
When I lived in London, I had Canadian housemates and for Canada Day one year, the mum of one of my housemates sent a package over with biscuits (cookies) that were the shape of a maple leaf. They were a sandwich cookie, I think the cookie part was shortbread and the filling was a maple syrup creme - similar to the consistency of an Oreo filling. They were seriously the best cookies EVER!
I actually have several Canadian friends coming in for my wedding and I am requesting that they bring some of those cookies.... cheeky, I know, but they were THAT good. :-)
