@Rosie Girl:I'm getting EVERY test they offer done. And, if I hear about some they don't offer, I will research them, and see where it goes (if I want to ask the clinic about it or not).
So far I've done everything that my doctor has recommended. The only one that I was really debating was the NT scan, but I'm glad I did it b/c it ended up being a very long ultrasound, and I loved watching my baby on the screen the whole time. I make sure to do my research though. DH and I discuss every test before I do it to make sure we understand what it entails and if there are any associated risks that we are uncomfortable with.
I will get the screenings my doctor recommends, after weighing the risks of course. If we found out something was really wrong with the pregnancy, we would like to know so we can choose whether to continue it, and if we do, be prepared for any special needs.
We are of the same mind--regardless, we will still have and love our baby. I am getting the 20 week u/s done because I want to see the baby, determine the gender and find out if there are any visible developmental issues so we can prepare if need be, but as far as any other testing is concerned, we're not doing any of it.
@Rosie Girl: I am doing all of it. DH and I plan to keep the child regardless of what the test results are, but I believe knowledge is power. I would rather do the research that is needed so that we can be fully prepared for our child. To me learning about caring for a child with a birth defect is just as important as feeding that child.
Agreed. My husband and I were both really torn on doing the NT scan or not. We felt like all of you that we will love it no matter what. But at the end we felt the right thing to do was to go forward with the scan so we know. And can prepare for it if need be.
We had a CVS test and the 20wk anatomy scan ultrasound. I'm a carrier for a pretty awful ("incompatible with life") genetic disease, so our doctor recommended CVS or amnio; we opted for CVS since it can be done earlier.
@eryepye: we got the 20 wk done too, more to determine sex and see the baby then anything else!
It feels like I'm getting EVERY test done, I personally dont care too much for the tests but I agree to anything thats non invasive and doesnt pose any harm to the baby. So if its a blood test, urine test or ultrasound I'm ok with it, but anything beyond that I am not willing to do.
Just wanted to come back and say that after seeing this thread, I read a bunch of stuff online about prenatal testing and have sufficiently freaked myself out :(
I opted for all of the screenings and scans. It provided reassurance that everything was fine, and if things were not, it would have provided the heads up to start prepping for what may have been ahead.
I had:
It can be a little overwhleming, but don't let it freak you out. Everything has a purpose and it's a decision that you and your husband can make for each one.
We had the non-invasive tests done (the NT scan and the sequential screen). Had either of those come back as abnormal, we would have then had the CVS or the amnio.
We actually never discussed what we would do if the results came back unfavorable. I know, we should have. I don't think it would have changed our game plan, but it would have given us time to prepare.
@daniellemybelle: Seems like I've had the most invasive testing done on this thread so far. I wouldn't call the CVS procedure or any of the emotions we had going through it as "fun"-- I won't sugarcoat-- it was brutal. But we felt it was necessary. We have no regrets and we'll have it done with every pregnancy we have going forward, unless something better comes along. We both felt like we could finally get excited after the results came back (24 hrs later!). It was such a relief to announce to the pregnancy to our family, friends, and co-workers at 13 wks and have ZERO reason to worry about anything happening to the pregnancy. (At least, nothing genetic.)
I wouldn't say don't be nervous if you should find you need to go through anything more invasive. There are risks. But we had a great doctor, trusted their judgement, and they did a good job. The peace of mind, for us, was worth it.
This is my first, we didn't do any genetic testing in the first trimester. We figured it wouldn't change things for us, but we wanted to be prepared just in case. In the second tri, we had the full ultrasound and bloodwork for the trisomys, but nothing "invasive".
I know you worry about finding something to make you worry, but on the other side of that coin, you may hear that everything looks great! The peace of mind is a really nice thing to have.
@lemondrop: Mind if I ask exactly what tests you got during your 2nd trimester and when? It's because we want to get the first tri tests but we'll be on vacation then, so I'm thinking about opting for the 2nd set of tests but I didn't realize they were non-invasive in the 2nd trimester.
We haven't done much. We did the initial bloodwork recommended the first appointment (they test vit. D levels, hemoglobin, and a couple other things), as well as the urine culture.
We opted out of any of the genetic screening tests, I didn't see the need for any unnecessary worry and I knew I'd love the baby no matter what, and just didn't want to know "potential risks". I did really want the 20wk u/s, moreso to see the baby and know the gender, but being told that all the parts were beautiful and looking healthy was huge for me once the day came!
I won't be doing any more "tests" other than necessary bloodwork.
We're not doing any voluntary testing. It's unnecessary worry, IMO, and the results wouldn't make a difference anyway. The regular ultrasounds, blood testing, glucose test, etc. are the only ones we have done/are going to be doing.

I've seen a couple posts, today actually, about getting scans and tests done. I am curious at to what all of you pregnant (or past pregnant) bees are getting done? I have opted (with my first pregnancy also) to not get any done. I guess for me it really doesn't matter if something is wrong with the baby, I will still have it and love it. The only thing that would change is that I would have a warning that my baby has something. But I think that would just cause me to have a very stressful pregnancy. Both DH and I feel comfortable with not having any tests or scans done. What about you?
