Crazy, isn’t it?  Doctors also think, however, that the kind we get today is a less virulent form than in the Middle Ages.

I read a really interesting article on Cracked.com not too long ago about ancient things that surprisingly still exist, and I think the plague was one of them.  I’m going to find that article now…

I know, it sounds terrible but if someone ever told me that they suffered from the plague I wouldn’t be sure if I should laugh or cry for them.

it’s so archaic.  getting bitten  by an animal, your first thought would be “rabies!” not “bubonic plague!”

OMG! That’s terrible! I can’t imagine a town full of people walking around like that…so happy I didn’t live back then!

I’m morbidly fascinated by the plague, I actually read a book about it once.  I knew that a few people still get infected in the U.S. every year. Can you imagine getting that diagnosis?  At least these days, they know what causes it and how to treat it!

Other fun facts, or rather hypotheses:

Some researchers now think that many recorded plague deaths were actually not caused by the plague, but by another, ebola-like disease with similar symptoms. Obviously, that would be only the pneumonic plague. The bubonic plague has pretty unique symptoms.

There is a theory that descendents of those who got sick with the plague but survived are more resistant to HIV today.
