Doesn’t seem TOO late to open at 9:45 if you are partying through the midnight clock. But 2 hours and 45 minutes for dinner and formalities is a LONG time…. We went to a wedding a few weeks back that started at 4, I don’t think they got done with all the rituals until probably 8 and by then I felt like it should be midnight.

Their ceremony was probably 40 minutes long, then probably hour long or more cocktail hour. Then they did the following rituals: Speeches, all unprepared, probably 10 freaking speeches. Father daughter dance, mother son dance, couples dance, bouquet toss, dollar dance, cake cutting… i thought the rituals would never end.

Our ceremony was at 5:30. Cocktail hour from 6-6:45, then we sat down and toasted (only three toasts) I belive we all got dinner at 7:15 ish. After dinner we did our f/d, m/s dance, then started dancing, and somewhere in the middle of that we cut cake. We didn’t do dollar dances, bouquet or garter tossing etc…. I think we danced from 8-10, then we did a chinese lantern send off, one last dance, and then the wedding ended at 10:30

Probably around 8:30 for us.

Cocktail hour 5:30 – 6:30, and then a plated dinner. We have until 1am.

Our dance floor was open after about our 30 minutes of formalities (first dance, parents, dance, speeches) and was packed for the next 3 1/2 hours.  I think it depends on your DJ and your crowd.

This was after a 15 minute ceremony & 1.5 hour cocktail hour.  More than half our guests went back to the hotel and we shut the bar down at 4 a.m. 🙂

@Nic01:  Hmm..9:30 seems late to me but when I am at a wedding I like to dance, however I see that you are having a late ceremony so it may be hard to change it.  We have about 9 months til our wedding so this timeline could very easily change but as of now I have it going like this:

2:00pm: Ceremony

2:30pm: Receiving Line (Cocktail Hour begins)

3:00pm: Family Photos

3:30pm: Bridal Party Photos

5:00pm: Reception begins – entrance and dances (First, Father, Mother)

5:30pm: Dinner served (Buffet).

6:00pm: Speeches

Some of our areas are pretty tight, but we only have until midnight so I wanted the party to start ASAP, and I figure this leaves some room for if things (like dinner, or speeches) go over their “allotted” time. Hope this helps!
