What to Ask My Wedding Planer?

@Bambi2014:  maybe:

how many weddings have you done?
How many do you typically do in a year?
How many weddings do you usually be planning at once?
Do you have good relationships with vendors?
Do you only use specific vendors or do I have the freedom to choose the vendors I like?
Do you work with an assistant?
What exactly do you consider your responsibilities (does he/she set up/breakdown decor, does she coordinate the rehearsal, will she go with you to dress findings/fittings, will should go with you to vendor meetings, etc.)?
Do you have any referrals I can talk to that you’ve worked with recently?
Can I see some photos of her recent events?
Do you only plan weddings, or do you do other events, too?
Are you taking any lengthy vacations between now and my wedding?

that’s all I can think of for now!

  • Wedding: August 2015

I just went through finding a wedding planner and learned A LOT. Our first choice turned out to plan weddings on the side and realy treated itas a hobby and not a business – she ended up dropping us before we even started to plan saying that it was too eafly to accept 2015 clients. Funny, since she was the one badgering us to put down a deposit when I said I wanted to wait. The second planner only provided packages, instead of by the hour rates, and would not let us select our own package. Needless to say, that didn’t work out either.

As far as questions go, these are the ones I found to be the most important. I made up a big list as well (3 pages worth). Feel free to PM me if you’d like a copy.

Is this your full time job

How many years experience/references (client and vendor)/portfolio

How many weddings they tyipically do in one week (will you be getting their full attention that weekend)

Who will step in if they, for whatever reason, are unable to attend on the day

Do they recieve commission/referral fees from their usual vendors or will they select vendors based on your needs

Do they get discounts with any vendors in town

If they work by the hour or if you are required to purchase a ‘package’ from them

Hope this helps!

@Bambi2014:  seriously, everything! One of the things that I would really zone in on is how they think on your feet. I’ve said this a million times but you want a wedding planner that is so passionaltely-obsessive about your wedding that she knows it as if it were her own. I would want someone who can trouble shoot.

Other things that were mentioned but worth highlighting are: referrals from past clients, # of wedding taken on per year, staffing, years in business, who will take over in the awful event that he/she cannot be there.

GOOD luck!
