I had my dress at the house until I did my alterations… that way I was responsible for it, Didn’t really want to trust anyone else with such an important item… 🙂

When mine came in, we still had a few months to wait before alterations.  I left it there, because then it’s THERE responsibility if anything happens to it!

Agree with Bruschetta.  I bought mine months ago and my wedding isn’t until June.  If you leave it there, it’s their responsibility.  If you bring it home, whatever happens to it is not their problem.  I would leave it.

When my dress came in I HAD to pick it up and bring it home with me until alterations.  If I’d been given the choice, I agree wtih Miss Bruschetta, leave it at the store.  Not only is it their responsibility, but also seriously having the dress at home and not putting it on, twirling around and showing it off to everyone (possibly even the FI) is HARD! 🙂

I waited about a month before I started alterations and I left my dress at the store.  I was a little nervous about it, but I wanted to make sure that if something happened, then they would have to fix it. Plus, I didn’t have a place for it in my apartment!

I had mine at home with me until alteration time was here.  Like Bru said, the shop is reposinsible should anything happen to it, but I liked having it readily accessible

I brought my dress home with me in between delivery and alterations.  I just couldn’t bear the thought of leaving her there alone!  🙂  I felt the same way about fire or theft or natural disaster or something.  I wanted her with me so I’d have more control over the situation (plus I know we have adequate insurance on the house and she’d be covered if something did happen…you never know about shops).  So, she came home with me and was loved and admired for a few months before heading back to the bridal shop.

I had to take mine home but if I would have had the choice, I too would have left it at the store.

i have mine hangingin up in a garment bag in our living room (NYC apartment = no space). I had no other choice other than fly the dress to Florida to hang out at my mom’s apartment til May. It makes me a little uncomfortable to have it at home, so leave it at the store if you can!!

i left mine in the store rather than cramping it in a closet or risking my FI sees it.

I would really say it depends on the store.  If you bought from a little boutique, there’s always the consideration if the store closes or files bankruptcy.  I read about horror stories where brides couldn’t get to their dresses or even worse, they were auctioned off by a third party.  If you bought from some place super solid, I wouldn’t want to risk it getting messed up at home either.

Thanks for this post!!! I hadn’t thought about whether to take my dress home or not after it comes in! I will probably leave it at the store if that is an option because of the responsibility…I want it to be on them and not me.
