I have had quite the fun journey with interviews lately. One was especially confusing. I was referred to a hiring manager at a big company by a close friend (she plays tennis with the manager) and also by a woman who works out at the gym I used to work at. The big company called me in for an interview for the position. I was interviewed by a panel of managers that the hiring manager supervises, and then never heard anything. At all. For weeks.
Well, fast forward about a month and then I hear from the friend at the gym that the reason I wasn’t picked had to do with the way I answered one question. The panel didn’t like my response (I sounded bossy apparently…so far from the truth…) but the actual supervisor liked the answer and was frustrated at her team for not calling me back. I sent an e-mail to the supervisor thanking her for the opportunity to interview with the company, yadda yadda. She replied within two minutes that she wanted to interview me on Monday. Sounds great, right? Well Monday is the start of the LONGEST and MOST HECTIC week of the year at my current job. I need to be here Monday morning, but there are no other times available to meet. So, I go through the internal battle of Do I- Don’t I and say ok to Monday. Less than an hour later she emails back saying that she just got a call and was told to put hiring on hold for the position. I’m heartbroken but thank her anyway and try to put it out of my mind.
THEN TODAY I GET AN E-MAIL FROM HER THAT THERE IS ANOTHER POSITION SHE WANTS ME TO INTERVIEW FOR! The position hasn’t posted to the company’s job site yet, but she immediately contacted me to come in and interview. Has to be a good sign!
Now my dilemma is this…..how the heck to I manage to get out of work for a few hours Monday morning to interview with her?!?! It is so frustrating!! I don’t want to jepordize what could be an awesome opprtunity to be sure I’m here at a job I am desperately trying to leave. It is still giving me tons of anxiety to somehow tell my boss I won’t be there. I’m leaning towards “my car won’t start!” or some other car-related issue. There is NO way I’ll get anything appproved in advance, it will have to be an “emergency”.
Bees, any advice?
