@garden_bride:  Try not to panic until you hear the actual price.  Then, if they are still insisting it would cost twice the amount you agreed to, ask them why.  Did they make a mistake in their calculations?  What is it, exactly, that makes doing x, y, and z so expensive?  Maybe they’re just trying to take your money.

If they won’t come down, just take it somewhere else! There’s always another alterations store. Don’t give them your business if thye were dishonest with you.
